Doctor Who (2005)
Seasons 1-10 are great
This show had a fantastic run for quite a while. Chris Eccleston, David Tennant and Matt Smith were all excellent in the role as The Doctor. The stories, characters and overarching plot were all so well done.
The series starts to show some rough edges right as Peter Capaldi becomes The Doctor, but I don't blame him for it. He just got stuck with some mediocre stories, and his sidekick Clara and other side characters just weren't as good. Loved the episodes Mummy on the Orient Express, and Heaven Sent.
Season 11 is where the show falls off a cliff. The writing is so awful, I kept fast forwarding through episodes trying to find something good, and then the seasons ended. Jodie Whittaker didn't get a chance to show how good, or bad, she could be in the role.
Starting Season 14 now in hopes that the show is good again now that Chibnall is not head writer and producer anymore.
Foundation (2021)
Imperfect but fantastic show
The best part about Foundation is simply the amount of lore and possibilities within this universe. It compares to the likes of The Expanse, LOTR, Dune, and Game of Thrones. The second is the utterly masterful acting by Demerzel (Larua Birn) Empire Brother Day (Lee Pace) and Brother Dawn (Terrence Mann).
Some of the plotlines are a little boring here and there, and of course some of the acting with such a large cast, but the Empire keeps my eyes glued to the screen in anticipation of what comes next and also what will be revealed about the past.
The cinematography is high end with excellent sets and CGI, some beautiful locations and artwork, and I am a little bit of a sucker when it comes to Roman aesthetics in architecture and clothing.
Now here's where I usually would complain about the adaptation, but this is based off of three different series written over more than four decades, and the show couldn't get all of the rights without blowing their budget. So far I feel like it has been done in the spirit of the books by fans, unlike The Witcher where the show writers disdained the material they were supposed to bring to our screens, so good work to them. I am ready for season 3.
Drops of God (2023)
Excellent excellent show slightly brought down by the ending
The ending is so dumb, and it's completely on purpose for no payoff. The whole time, that's all they had to do, just give the other one half of the collection and half the value of the house after they win. Their father can't do anything about what the winner decides to do with the inheritance once the lawyer signs it over.
They would only have to sell a couple hundred or so of the most expensive bottles to have the money. The idiotic talk about suing their dead dad and DNA testing was pointless.
Loved everything else about the show though, characters, story, cinematography, and I don't even like wine. It gives me the worst headaches the next day.
The Witcher (2019)
Would be surprised if the show doesn't get cancelled
See some people saying that season 2 was great, and it only started going downhill this season. How? The only good episode in season 2 was the first one which actually followed the books quite closely, and surprise, it's actually good. Was a complete dumpster fire after that.
Watching season 3 though, we can see why Cavill decided to leave. The show continues to careen off into its own direction. Spending a whole episode each on the conclave and Ciri in the desert, just to rush the rest of the season should've been seen as a mistake before filming even started. I give props to Henry, Anya, Freya, MyAnna, and Mahesh for trying to carry this season, but their backs are surely broken by this awful writing very far from the finish line.
Succession (2018)
9/10 until halfway through
The first two seasons are excellent television. The plots, the characters, the interactions between all of them public and private, the scheming, backstabbing, sucking up, backroom deals, vices and addictions and more.
Once it gets to the third season though, it's like the writers used up all of their best material. They start rehashing the same plotlines that have already been done, repeating character beats, themes, etc. There are some new things, but they don't bring as much excitement and ultimately the show ends in mediocrity.
Wanted to end with a slightly generous 6/10 but with two at the top and two at the bottom, I settled on a 5. Could just barely finish the show.
