Scream VI (2023)

I Hate Mindy (and everything she represents)
5 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Mindy is one of my least favorite characters in modern fiction, she is easily the weakest part of this movie. Her tone and mere presence is insufferable. The movie is adequate and even good at points, shi had me giggling Imma keep it a bean. But Jesus Christ every time this mf is on screen I was overcome with pure hatred, genuinely made me mad. I don't think I could watch this movie again unless I fast forwarded through all her scenes, which are most of the movie. From annoying monologues to failing as an opponent of Ghostface, the only time I can watch a scene of her's is when she is getting repeatedly stabbed. Ngl Ethan's virgin ass could've finished her off on that train and I would praise the film as a masterpiece, but no. She survives through "core four" plot armor (corny btw) and manages to make the convoluted but ultimately triumphant ending totally lame. If any character should've died, it should have been her. Why give her such a "badass" personality if she's just going to cower in fear when Ghostface gives her a little scratch and continues to gut her "girlfriend" like a fish. I could forgive her insufferable attitude if she showed the least bit of competence. If you're going to implement a strong female protagonist (of which there are a few in the film) at least have them do the bare minimum. Don't make them a total wuss who acts tough but can't defend themself or their "family". Not to mention how self-righteous she is, presenting as the most informed and intelligent person in the group, when in reality she only knows basic facts about the horror genre. Don't get me started on the film's attempts at meta humor, what was once charming and a staple of the franchise has become sickening and played out. The things I do like about this movie are outweighed by my hatred for this character. You suck Mindy, please die in the sequel.

Dune (2021)
10/10
Game of Thrones meets Lawerence of Arabia, in space, on drugs.
30 December 2022
This movie is rad. Denis Villenueve kinda killed it with this one. As a fan of the book and his filmography I trust him completely to adapt this material. I do urge viewers who are going in to this flick without much familiarity, to acknowledge that this is very much a Part 1. It may feel like there is no real resolution but you can't do DUNE in one movie, you just can't. This story needs time to be as fleshed put as it can be.

On another note if you want more from this world and it's ideas, I strongly recommend reading the book by Frank Herbert. The films will unfortunately never be able to capture the writing's depth, complexity, and minutiae. After all they face the daunting task of selling tickets to current audiences.

not a weed movie, just a horny guys movie
22 September 2022
This movie is not about marijuana, the drug is only mentioned a handful of times in the entire film. I'll admit there is a scene where two characters smoke from a can pipe. This movie is about a bunch of guys drooling over any female being they see. The quote used in the marketing is inaccurate and baseless. While dazed and confused is a well crafted piece of cinema, this flick struggles to achieve what d&c did in portraying pothead culture. This movie is dazed and confused with lazy writing, bad performances, forgettable characters, and more misogyny. Not to get political about a movie from the 90s but it's not ignorable. The women in this film are objectified left and right, they are quite literally mcguffins that drive the main characters' "quest" forward. Don't waste your time, smoke your bowl and watch something else.

Half Baked (1998)

a piece of stoner cinema
12 July 2022
This film is a triumph, it encompasses entertainment in its purest form. It effortlessly balances comedy, narrative, and good times. That being said some people will not be able to appreciate this film's nuance and artistry, it takes a certain intellect and mindset to truly understand this 1998 classic.

In all actuality it's a great movie. And ya gotta watch it... but like... on weed man.

Stranger Things (2016–2025)
8/10
the show sank in quality
8 July 2022
TLDR: Season 1 is almost perfect, Season 2 is also great, Season 3 is not as good but a very fun ride, Season 4 is overrated with high highs and lower lows.

I love Stranger Things. It's a great season of television with likable characters, an interesting plot, solid writing with lots of heart, and it's very authentic to the 80s setting. It's a 10 in my book.

I think Stranger Things 2 is an incredible follow up to the first season. It builds upon the first season well especially with Will's character, some of my favorite scenes in the show take place in this season, the upside down becomes a more dynamic location with new but alike creatures, it's a strong sequel with great new additions. I'd probably have to give it a 9 because of how great the first season is... I also think this season is overhated for doing interesting stuff with it's story and being different from it's predecessor.

While Stranger Things 3 is in my opinion a welcome addition to the show, it is the least engaging part. Just about every aspect of the show besides certain characters is just not as good. My biggest gripe with the season is how they handle the 80s setting... in this season the nostalgia and 80s isms are dialed to 11, to the point where the show loses a lot of the authenticity that was cultivated in the first two seasons. Something this season has is it's comedy, though many characters will get pretty goofy for no real reason... it's entertaining if nothing else. I'd probably give this one a 7 just because this is kinda where the show fell off, it's still decently watchable.

Now on to Stranger Things 4, my least favorite part of the show. This time around the highs are high and the lows are really darn low. It seems that to be up in arms about how this is the best season of the show and that it's so much better is an acceptable reaction to Stranger Things 4. I'm not saying this to be a lame-o contrarian but I couldn't disagree more. What the show did poorly before this season does repeatedly and horridly, we bounce around between storylines very frequently occasionally giving less than a minute of screen time to a less integral piece every cutaway, the writing is the worst it's ever been (super predictable and uninspired at points), the acting in the now late-teenage main cast is somehow worse than it was when they were like 12, and this season is just kind of blah. Like is said earlier the lows are low, but the highs my friends... the highs are very high. Vecna is a pretty cool villain (could've been scarier but I digress), Sadie Sink is phenomenal as Max, this season gets pretty horrific (I personally am proud that the show went there), and Eddie Munson is probably the best character that will ever grace Stranger Things as a series. Over all this one is like a 6, still watchable just disappointing and polar while being one of the most overrated seasons of television in recent memory.

I'm totally watching ST5 the second it releases but the show sank in quality dramatically. Cant say I'm not worried that the finale will disappoint.
