Hei fun nei si nei (2021)
Heartbreaking Romance
Follows two best friends at an all girl high school and what happens when society and circumstance conspires to keep them apart. Wing and Sylia discover a tender love between them that captures the essence of obsessive first love. Mostly their time at school, and continues into their twenties where they hopefully are free to make choices for their mutual happiness. That the director is a woman shows through with tender love scenes and plenty opportunities for tears on screen and in the audience.
Ma Belle, My Beauty (2021)
Good Film
Occasionally felt like a tourist advertisement for the south of France with the beautiful cinematography. My partner repeatedly commented on how hot Bertie (one of the women from the polyamorous relationship) is.
All the relationships felt real and the ending left me thinking about the story for longer than usual.
Rebel Dykes (2021)
Great Documentary
Amazing mix of original footage most from the 80's with interviews, music and animation. Mainly about the people and personalities of the Chain Reaction S&M club in London, but also has an interesting background of the Greenham Common protest and Thatcherism that overlaps with the lesbian lives.
Coming to You (2021)
Good Documentary
Follows two young adults, one who is gay and the other is transgender.
Focuses on the mums of the two and their experiences with PFLAG Korea.
A mix of inspiring stories, with plenty of sadness too. (I cried a couple of times.) The scene with anti-queer protesters was intense and upsetting. Fathers were noticeably absent from the narrative, but in the closing credits it was nice to see some supportive dads too.
Jie da huan xi (2021)
Vivid Romance
A colourful queer fantasy loosely based on Shakespeare's play "As You Like It".
Not knowing the original, the family relationships and dynamics at times were hard to follow, but that didn't matter.
The film begins with a cover of the Temptation's song "My Girl" where the opening scenes immediately signal the *Love is Love* message. With all the roles played by women there is a lot to enjoy.
No Straight Lines: The Rise of Queer Comics (2021)
Fantastic Documentary
A fascinating look at the origins of the underground gay, lesbian and queer comix scene starting in the 1970's.
Mostly told through the words and voice of the creators of the time, interspersed with snippets of their work.
Loved finding ourt more about Alison Bechdel and creators I wasn't familiar with. I continually had to pause the play because I wanted to admire the art for much longer than the on screen time allowed.
Death and Bowling (2021)
Disappointed
Disappointed after the glowing reviews.
Felt like a mix of colourful John Waters and David Lynch weirdness. The supposed message of the importance to be seen, is diluted by the self conscious quirkiness. Tries too hard to be a full length feature, but would have been better as a twenty minute short.
