Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2024)
On its own its a 7? compared to the others its a 3.
I only watched the first episode, but yeah its like 2 narratives shoved together. One of these people thrust into a job they don't necessarily understand. And the other of two awkward babes falling in love. As its own show, i think it wouldve been pretty cool. But as an approximation of the Mr. And Mrs. Smith narrative its terrible and clunky and kind of dumb. The whole point of, at least the movie narrative, is that these individuals are hyper competent and that the only real blind spot they have is each other. But Maya and Donald are kind of green and reckless, putting 2 and 2 together to make 4 but not well. I exhaled through my nose harder at the post-credit season preview than I did the whole first episode.

My Unwatchable Nephew David
The reboot prompted me to watch the original for the first time. Which has been..fine. I definitely see why its the institution that it is. This show is the cursed hallmark Christmas special of that show. And the icing on the cake is Anders Keith's performance as David. Ive seen a couple reviews compare him to Sheldon, but there's definitely this Rachel Berry quality to the character that makes him hard to root for or connect with. They threw out all the subtleties in the show, and with them DavidHyde's original performance. In contrast Keiths performance is empty and ham fisted, which would've been fine, if he didnt seem to be in some kind of overacting olympics with every other actor on screen. He had me skipping through scenes for relevant information and bailing on episodes during the rising action. But otherwise, if you just pretend youre watching a Hallmark Fraiser movie or Disney Channel show, its watchable.

Emotionally immature parents: The Show
We've enjoyed watching the show, but at this point S6 we've given up hope on any kind of accountability/consequences for the characters actions outside of what's convenient for the plot. As people in the age group of the "kids" in the show, we found a lot of the resolutions to be lack luster, a lot of the apologies were bandaids, and that too many crossed boundaries were just not acknowledged because these characters are "Moms". As children of narcissistic parents this was affirming to watch. But as people that are still working through these things in real life, its discouraging to acknowledge the possibility that they'll never change and will be abusive, denialist, addicts, forever. And that this show will enable them.
Somewhat related: race has a SUPER weird role in the show. Black men pop up as sex objects and black women are pretty exclusively arms of social institutions. The only black "main" character does not get his own storyline until he marries a white woman. He spends the whole show being functionally accepted yet socially rejected by his family, and its clear that he's supposed to be grateful for the opportunity (literal adoption aside). The only sexual partner that anyone ever discusses using a condom with is a black man etc...not even mentioning "Grace's" consistent dismissal of The Help.
Unrelated: the shows kind of one big ad. At one point one of the characters actually says "special moment, Special K" all the prescriptions are brand name, all the snacks are brand name. They endorse other tv shows, anything. If you can name it, they'll write an ad into the script for it. Or incorporate it into the set.
Good show, buts its aging as we speak.

Ep 5. Still waiting to laugh
I spent the first first couple episodes waiting to laugh, and the second two trying to find some meta humor or historic merit to hook me. But there really isnt anything. It isnt a show for people who like animation or comedy.
It's probably the most fun for people who like to poke holes in mainstream representations of ancient cultures, but not laugh. And maybe some "laugh at the smart guy" Big Bang Theory fans. As an audience member I cant tell if the writers thinks im dumb, but I can tell that the animators do. Someone else compared the animation style to early adult swim but I would compare it to early HBO. And now that I think about it, they may have been going for a "screen-play" vibe, but its still really badly executed.
Love the cast, and it's honestly really disappointing that I cant keep watching just for them.

Couldnt leave my seat, Didnt want to
Incredible film, from the moment it starts. Beautiful story about being a real person in an ecosystem of artificial constructions. The comedy was perfect, it lightened the situation without taking anything from the plot. The characters are just genuinely funny people. The cinematography beautifully compliments this dichotomy between the Real World and artificial constructs, this is leaving out that the movie is just GORGEOUSLY shot. Every color, every texture, every shape feels intentional and vibrant. Even the neutrals, ESPECIALLY the neutrals! They made a movie that feels like FUBU Wes Anderson, and having never seen myself in a wes Anderson film I felt really loved and cherished. Beautiful people, beautiful movie! Will be endlessly rewatching for the score and easter eggs, and the visual experience and the feels. Like a Ghibli. Like a Studio Ghibli film. A masterpiece. Genuinely.
Next in Fashion (2020)
Season 1 was fun, Season 2 was unwatchable.
Overall I found that season 1 ran so season 2 could fly, and that season 2 tripped, missed the baton and ate dirt. Hadid adds NOTHING, her socialite friends and models that can barely string 2 sentences together add NOTHING. There was very little "mentoring" or technical advice from commercial designers because neither the hosts, nor the guest judges are experts. So theres a lot of the designers learning from each other. Which was honestly great to watch. The team/show structures or lack there of felt like they didnt give the designers enough time to show their talent. Also the top 3 designers were kind of bad. I was completely disappointed by the finale runway show. My spouse couldnt even tell it was supposed to be the finale/championship. The designs looked mass produced and the quality of each piece varied super widely. I also hated the use of the contestants children as guests. Watching Tan try to communicate with regular kids across a runway while their relative awkwardly encourages them and tries to look grateful from the stage was easily the worst part of the whole show, 1&2.
I wanted to wear s1' designs off the runway. I probably wouldnt go into a store selling only the finale looks from the s2.
Also Is it really an "international" competition if they just pick tokens and everyone else is from America?
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande (2022)
Who wrote this?
Mallory Archer? The guy is both magical and a "strapping young buck", that shes literally purchasing the services of and objectifying. I guess there was supposed to be a sex-work positivity message, but it wasn't clear that all sex work is good, and not just the kind that fulfills this audience. No closure if you happened to identify with the other character in the movie because you arent the "audience", your orgasm doesnt matter lol. I appreciate that they included the perspective of one of her students, but she still has ALL of the power in these interactions and the movie spends a lot of time treating her like a innocent, impressionable..?older woman being challenged by these young people that need her money? Gimme a break.

Feels like indie fetish content
I ignored the uncomfortably fetishizing narration and camera work until I couldnt, then I turned it off. This short seems like a self serving distillation of everything wrong with colorism from the perspective of a delusional token.
Dicktown (2020)
I loved it
Its super awkward sometimes, but its funny and authentic and wholesome. I had a great time watching it, and was confused and disappointed to see its bad overall reception. I think my least favorite part was being yelled at by Amy Sedaris' character, but thats not unique to this show.
