The Mosquito Coast (2021)
Halfway through...
I switched to a football bowl game because this series was so slow and poorly written. Apparently this family is forced to escape to Mexico because government officials are chasing the father. However, the writers did not reveal information about the infraction so viewers have no idea if they can empathize or engage with him and his cause. I might have cheered on the government officials but I wasn't given any direction on who were the proverbial good and bad guys. The father is selfishly subjecting his children to major disruptions in their lives and life threatening situations in order to chase his (politically correct?) agenda. His character contradicts itself after lecturing his daughter and the audience with his woke opinions concerning the evils of spending money on military equipment vs spending the money to help the homeless but he apparently has little reluctance to risk and sacrifice the lives of his family and the two immigrants he hired to assist them.
The mother is portrayed as a detached, uncaring woman who acts and dresses like a teenager. She seems to care more for one of the immigrants than her own children. It's difficult to stick with a series when you don't know any of the back story and can't like the characters-except, perhaps, the immigrants.
The story moves slowly, typical of tv series that need to fill up their allotted time. Oh, and the butterfly touch would be cute in a child's or a love story but I found it inappropriate, cheesy, and immature for
this gritty program.
Purple Hearts (2022)
Immature
I'm amazed at the overall rating this movie has received, makes one wonder about the average age of the evaluators. This is another one of Netflix's poorly written, poorly acted attempts at entertainment. There are several irritating points about this movie. The plot is weak, transparent, predictable, poorly developed and even more poorly acted. The female lead has a terrible attitude-maybe she should be grateful her illegal immigrant mother was allowed to stay in the U. S.-and her singing is deplorable (recommend you mute or fast forward those segments). Painful, life changing events in the story are treated in a very shallow, insensitive manner. The most annoying point was the lecturing about political and social issues, I can watch the opinionated news outlets for that dross.
Stranger Things (2016)
I've learned...
That most Netflix originals are impossible to endure and this series doesn't disappoint; the only aspect of it worse than the dull, boring storyline is the pitiful, amateurish acting. However, if your entertainment expectations are not developed past the age of twelve or so, you might enjoy it.
Tough Guys (1986)
What were they thinking?
With two Hollywood legends headlining the cast, it would be a reasonable expectation to see a great movie in Tough Guys. But don't be misled, this is a boorish, humorless film with a vacuous script. It is sad these two superstars agreed to appear in this picture, such a waste of talent!
The story line could actually have been very good with better development and less absurdity but the writers apparently lost those ideas and based the movie's success on the two stars (watching one of the men try on ridiculous clothing was painful). One last note is the writers' obligation to include Hollywood's sexualization and objectification of women by failing to create more than one mature, realistic female part. Move on and find some of these two greats' earlier successes to enjoy.
The Old Man (2022)
Lost Interest with the Opening Scene
Listening to a character struggling to urinate isn't the type of 'hook' that captures and holds my attention. Neither is a script that subsequently drags erratically and slowly across the screen the same way the stream did. Perhaps my idea that movies, etc., should entertain, enlighten, or otherwise justify my time investment, is an outdated one with Hollywood writers and producers. The dry, mundane writing and acting lacked engagement but was compensated for with the over abundance of expletives, maybe added to spice up the lines? The scripts for the phone calls were especially artificial. I was unable to empathize, identify, or connect with, any of the characters at any level. I just wasn't convinced I should follow their lives and stories. So, eventually, I stopped trying.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Good Choice When One Needs to Sleep and Can't
The number of marks higher than four this series has been given is amazing. This is easily one of the slowest, most boring, series ever written and produced. The overload of everyday minutiae is incredibly painful to watch. There must be much better ways to spend one's life than watching actors and actresses carrying tables , walking, brushing their teeth, making coffee, or doing other mundane, trivial activities that add nothing to the story. If the goal of this production was to create a marathon series, then that was probably achieved, but any expectations of providing an entertaining program that captures and holds an audience's attention was lost in the process.
Betrayed (1988)
Spare yourself the misery
Of watching this stereotypical depiction of mid-American people by prejudiced, narrow minded Hollywood movie producers who seem determined to represent all rural Americans as ignorant, bungling, gun toting hicks. No doubt isolated hate groups exist, and creating movies that intelligently explore the forces behind these elements of our society
is important. However, artificial lines delivered in stilted manner by unbelievable actors and actresses (did the FBI agent really know how to operate a sophisticated combine and had she studied the culture in order to 'fit in'?)made this misguided attempt a travesty. The film needed more identity, I was confused if it was a love story with impossible complications or a poorly researched docudrama about hate groups. It was impossibly slow-thirty minutes in I felt I had been watching for three hours, make better use of your time and stop watching sooner than I did. Maybe, once film producers develop honest portrayals of hard working middle income Americans, they could take an intelligent, revealing look at the rampant gun violence in our inner cities.
The Replacements (2000)
Why is the word comedy used in the description?
Not sure there are enough adjectives to correctly describe this dismal mess masquerading as humor; Stupid, Ridiculous, Shallow, Vulgar, Inane, Vapid.
Predictably poor script with even worse acting and disrespectful depiction of women as clueless sex objects.
Manifest (2018)
Please set me free from Manifest!
I might recommend this series to insomniacs but for anyone hoping for a well written , well acted story, I recommend you keep looking . Humdrum storyline and stiff, monotonous acting, especially by the 'leads.'
