Not bad

This movie is like much of what J J Abrams does. It is on the edge of good but doesn't quite make it there.

Alison Janney is wonderful as Lou, the weird neighbor. She is what kept me watching. Journey Smollett as the mother of the abducted girl is also very good in her role. Matt Craven, always immensely watchable,, plays the Sheriff. The cast is great but about 1/2 through I stopped caring about the story. The actors kept me watching but the story just became too fantastical I could no longer suspend the window of disbelief.

It's not great, it's not bad. I think Allison Janney's acting here makes it worth a watch.

The Vampire Diaries (2009–2017)

Excellent

This is my favorite TV show, ever. Superbly cast, the story is centered around Elaina Gilbert and brothers Stephan and Damen Salvatore in the city of Mystic Falls. Elaina and her brother, Jeremy have been orphaned and now live in their home with their aunt Jenna. There have been animal attacks.

The show is so well-written I think it is better than the books. There are vampires and werewolves and Originals and hybrids and doppelgangers and hunters. The show can be intense. Even scary, so you may find yourself enjoying moments of respite. Enjoy them. They won't last long. I am so disappointed with the mess being made of Vampire Academy, I am rewatching this show. It remains my favorite and is immensely rewatchable.

Vampire Academy (2016– )

Stop checking boxes
18 September 2022
Stop checking boxes for casting every mouth-breather that claims to be oppressed and manipulating the story to do so. This absolutely ruined Legacies. There are books. Follow them. The show has promise with Julie Plec if they stop this nonsense.

The Vampire Academy books are boasted as fantasy/horror comedy. The series so far is fantasy/horror, with vampires and magic, but no comedy, which is fine.

The series starts out at St Vladimir's Academy boarding school where Lissa, a Moroi royal, and Rose, a Damir guardian are best friends. Rose is not only Lissa's best friend, but is also training to be her guardian. Outside the gates of the Academy there are "undead vampires" called strigoi who are a deadly and nasty bunch and definitely not friendlies to anyone within the Academy walls - so far.

The series is not cast very well, in my opinion. They seem to be trying to get brownie points instead of casting the best person for the role. So far it is coming very close to ruining the series, but there is still some promise in the series. Time will tell.

They/Them (2022)

Good acting but...
12 September 2022
I would not classify this as horror or mystery. It occupies a similar space as Get Out.

I found the acting to be good and all of the actors watchable. The writing is a different story. When the writing needed to be good - at the climax and pulling the pieces of the story together, we get lame speeches. If the writing had been better this would have been a good movie because everyone else was bringing it.

There is gay sex depicted - male on male, which feeds the story but could have been less explicit. There is female on female sex which doesn't feed the story and is just stupid.

I do not think it is as bad as the bad reviews or as good as the good reviews. I would say anything above a 5 is pure BS.
