The Curious Case of Natalia Grace (2023)
Intriguing Story
I believe that someone who hasn't seen the documentary and wants to check out its rating on IMDB could be deterred by its rating. If we want a better world, people need to watch this documentary and its not a waste of time.
The fact that Mr. Barnett was given too much time doesn't make any difference for me. At the end of the day your two functional brain cells will figure out that he's not the good guy and he does look like a bad actor even though there's still a possibility that, at the same time, he may have been abused by his wife, along with the rest of the family members.
Also, there are enough opinions and characters in the film to help the viewer make their own balance and rightful conclusion. If you pay attention, you won't get fooled by tears and drama and you won't let those influence your judgement.
In this world some people are noisy and dramatic and others are soft spoken and deep. If you pay attention to the bottom line, you will figure who's who and what's what. On the other hand, if some characters are dramatic and look a little phony, maybe this makes the story more entertaining.
Of course, the resolution of this film is absolutely wrong and leaves you with a very bad and bitter taste in your mouth... but then again, this is how the real world works.
Loverboy (2011)
Artistic and Captivating
I won't leave a bad review just because I needed to watch a documentary about sex-trafficking with a silly happy ending so my sleep won't get disturbed by something that I can't process and manage properly.
Well, I can go beyond all those ridiculous expectations and notice the forgotten taste of noir where bad dudes and gorgeous vamps made the world go round. But this movie goes even deeper than this: every scene is an oportunity to generate amazing visual poetry, to find the right angle and the right amount of light and turn the seemingly dull scenario into magic.
I'm not a fan of Romanian cinema but I begin watching it anyways, while asking myself how are they going to make an actual movie based on such a sinister and bleak reality. But they actually managed to create not only an interesting plot but also a strange and exotic world. I live in Transylvania and this type of setting couldn't be more exotic and unusual for me.
The movie has "that someting", it's charming and captivating. Despite the bad ending, the takeaway is substantial and the style is sophisticated which is a remarkable achievement for a movie about people with no academic background whatsoever.
Mo (2019)
Catchy Like the Song of Sirens
I love when movies manage to keep me watching. Whatever you do, leave me wanting more and make me want to know the resolution! Somehow, this movie made me giggle almost the whole time and the script was so well-done that I've never been able to guess where the story will take me.
Now I realize that this is a very low budget movie but for a low budget movie, it offered me an amazingly rich experience. That's what I love about a movie! You may want to see 1000 cars destroyed and lots of buildings in flames but if you are like me, you'd need something more than that.
The end was pretty extreme and dark, maybe a little bit in dissonance with the flow and vibe of the movie, (even though there's the danger flowing all the way to the end, in different doses at different times), and maybe this type of resolution leaves us with a more useful and realistic takeaway - sometimes you meet amazingly skilled predators and what makes them so skilled is the fact that you can't tell what's their next move.
The script writer has my full appreciation since they managed to portrey a text book predator with a remarkable artistic touch.
Miracol (2021)
An excellent movie
Looks like most people who write reviews about Romanian things feel like they should focus on the negative parts. Even when they found something good about the movie (acting, plot, etc) they still give the movie one star.
I know Romania has a very bad reputation and it's not a fancy place to look up to but can you please leave all that behind and try to appreciate what this movie actually has to offer?
They complain about long shots. But they still wanted to watch the resolution. They complain about typical Romanians who complain a lot and everything else. Looks like you too are in the habit of complaining!
This is Romanian style police work but don't forget that it's still a movie where you can't allow yourself the sin of being boring. Things are exaggerated and these policemen had to do something out of the ordinary to impress the audience.
Someone here talked about DNA testing and concluded that Romanian cinematography has nothing to offer. But they don't notice that the policeman was emotionally involved so he was supposed to act a little crazy.
I'm sorry that people failed to notice lots of nice things about this movie and they think that all movies are supposed to copy American style who-done-it so they can be worth a good review.
The Bad Batch (2016)
A Methaphor or Dream
Well, I did get some takeway out of this movie, but I can't say that I enjoyed watching it. Yes, it's nightmare-like and revolutionary and I managed to reach to the end of it but somehow leaves you with the impression that it's a tasteless movie.
Makes you think about the sacrifice of living and different kinds of environments with their pluses and their minuses and I get that it was intended to be a deep movie, that makes you reflect about things...
But it ended up being a dark and overly cynical interpretation of reality, taken right from the heavy dreams of a clinically depressed individual.
On the other hand, I'm glad the IMDB mobile app was improved, btw. Now at least I can see what I type. Good move!
Girl Next (2021)
Waste of time
As other users said, this movie had big potential: a beautiful victim, some bad guys, etc Unfortunately this potential was completely wasted. I could write a better script is I was drunk. I'm sorry, the writers need to work more and play less.
