The Fly (1986)
10/10
Science project that gone horribly wrong
17 April 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I finally am able to review this movie now that I'm in my twenties, having watch it again when the special edition DVD came out. I watched it when I was very young, probably about 5 or 6 when my dad rented it and it scared the crap out of me even though I didn't really understand the movie story but still it fitted the genre of horror. My dad loves this movie and he rented it a couple of times in the past and every time he came back with it,just the movie cover "THE FLY" was enough to make me avoid it at all costs.

The story itself is simple, an eccentric scientist Seth Brundle(Jeff Goldblum) was frustrated on why his telepods weren't able to teleport life forms. That was until he met the love of his life Veronica Quaife(Geena Davis) whose words inspired him such that he was able to change his program which succeeded in teleporting life forms. Well everything in his mundane life has changed for the better: He found his soul mate and his invention is on its way to becoming part of the nobel prize stage. However jealousy got the better of him and in an attempt to spite Veronica, he entered one of his telepods and did the teleportation without her to witness it. However, he didn't realise that a fly had gotten into the telepod with him and the program has fused his genes with the fly's genes at genetic level.

That's when all the horror starts as he starts mutating more and more into a gigantic fly which Seth himself labelled as "Brundlefly." Everything in this film is top notch, from the acting to the props and the story. Jeff Goldblum was able to play Seth Brundle to such a level that you will pity, fear and love him for what he is. Even though you know the ending in which he will die eventually, you will still feel emotions welling up at the end. Geena Davis was also brilliant as Veronica Quaife, the girlfriend who loved Seth so much and struggled when he underwent changes. She tried her best to stay with Seth, however her fear and Seth's insanity was too much for her to handle and she tried to leave him with no avail. Geena's acting of silent fear, desperation and love for seth hit right on the mark.

Of course I couldn't just comment on the acting, the props were also top notched and this was a time when CGI wasn't popular and readily used. The crew really put in a lot of effort into creating brundlefly which you could see towards the ending of the show whereby there was nothing physically human about seth but just a huge monster. I had no idea that it was just a puppet, I thought Jeff Goldblum was in a body suit or something but yeah it was a machine towards the end. Two words for the props: Gory, disgusting.

This film is seriously underrated in IMDb. 7.4/10, are you kidding me? With an A list cast, story and special effects,it belongs in the top 250 with the likes of Terminator 2, Alien, Aliens and Lord of the rings

Twilight (I) (2008)

Not too great
16 March 2009
Not too great. If you watch it like a typical chick flick, the movie was OK not great( I have seen better chick flicks!) but if you were hoping for some action or blockbuster with strong storyline, then it fails miserably. And I haven't read the book yet.

I said it was an OK chick flick is because of the way the film progresses and the environment the film was made. I didn't like the places where the movie was being filmed. The school didn't look like a school, the hospital, the forest, everything just doesn't seem right to me. Some of the actors in my opinion were terrible especially Kristen stewart, she always had the same blank look for the entire movie and the way she speaks just annoys me. The chemistry between her and Robert Pattinson was just weak and awkward. Robert Pattinson was an OK actor, not outstanding. He does have the correct look for a vampire- mysterious, pale and of course gorgeous. His acting was not bad till he had scenes with Kristen and the awkwardness between them in a lot of scenes just tones down his acting. If you compare their chemistry and love story to The Notebook, the romance in this movie was just plain horrible. Both Bella and Edward had absolutely no chemistry! Cam gigadent was great as the antagonist in the movie, however, he didn't appear till half of the movie later which was pity. Peter Facinelli and Billy Burke were good father figures. The rest of the cast didn't seem very important in the movie to me and were forgettable.

Overall, I believe it started out with a good plot( I gave it 4 stars because of this) but the massive number of errors just makes this movie go downhill as you continue to watch. Also they are making 3 more sequels to this. I believe the makers of this movie are trying to copy harry potter and hopefully garner the same kind of success but in the case of harry potter films, they do fare much better. Ironically enough, Robert Pattinson was also cast in one of the Harry Potter films. I'm pretty sure he knows the difference between a blockbuster and a mere chick flick.

Another Cinderella Story (2008 TV Movie)
6/10
OK movie I guess
8 February 2009
I managed to catch this movie and expected it to be a typical chick flick and high school drama- well I was right.

Story:

Mary is a high schooler who dreams of becoming a dancer, however she has to make it into the Manhatten dance school to fulfil her dreams. In the meantime she has to work for her stepmom( actually guardian in fact). Joey is a pop-star who came back to finish his studies in high school and to find his roots as well as choose a new dancer for his new music video. Mary is Cinderella and Joey is the prince.

Storywise, its very predictable, you do know what will happen next and of course both will end up happily ever after. I did like how the movie was flowing initially but towards the end, it started to get boring and I was wondering when it will end. I also noticed that dancing seemed to be the main theme of this movie. For that I gave it credit because I do like watching them dance.

Actors and acting:

I don't know about whether anyone noticed the age gap between Selena Gomez and Drew Seeley but I did and no I didn't even look at their ages in the first place. The minute I saw Selena, it struck me on how young she look, like a young teenager wheras Drew came across looking like a college student( I do know he's older then that later). Though they had OK chemistry, I find them really incompatible in terms of looks. Bad choice of actors in this case.

I like Jane lynch who played the stepmother. Proud and arrogant and often bullying Mary, her vulnerable times were comical especially when she told Mary she was unpopular as well.

The other actors, like Mary's rival in love, stepsisters and friends were just OK in acting. I see nothing special.

Batman (1989)
10/10
Still my favourite!
21 July 2008
I finally decided to write a review on this after so many years and its about time. I watched The dark knight a few days ago and right after I went home, I rewatched this again for comparison and I have to say no doubt, this is still my favourite even though Dark Knight was good as well.

Tim Burton's style is really unique and I loved the way he created Gotham city. Christopher Nolan's Gotham city was dark and modern, Tim Burton's one was probably more fantasy but there was still something eerie and lonely about it which I like.

Comparing Christian Bale and Michael Keaton as Batman. Both tied in this sense although in terms of looks, Christian Bale is better because he is better-looking and taller. However, both captured the true essence of Batman: the struggles of being a superhero and a rich heir with duties.

Now for the major comparison: Heath Ledger and Jack Nicholsan as Joker. As much as I applaud Heath's performance( I loved his version too!), Jack Nicholson is still my mainstay. He was the reason I started being a fan of Batman even though Tim Burton did as much. You may argue that if I had watch Dark Knight at that time, I would be a fan but no. I saw a wicked sense of humour, madness and intelligence as well as comedy for Joker in this movie. There are times where you can see his comedic side and times of madness. He killed people like Heath did in Dark knight. Intelligence of Joker was also included in this film as stated by Bruce as well as the invention of symalx gas and funny lines by the Joker like " where did he get those wonder toys?" and " You wouldn't hit a guy with glasses won't you?" are priceless. For Heath, I saw mainly madness and a little humour.

These are the reasons why I prefer this over the highly acclaimed Dark Knight. The simplicity of the story of having just Joker as the bad guy, batman and the simple love story between Vicki Vale and Bruce Wayne was an added bonus as compared to Dark Knight which has too many plot lines and characters which could lead to confusion and diversion from the main plot line.

Don't get me wrong though, The Dark Knight is still a wonderful film but this one is irreplaceable for me.

An excellent followup to Batman Begins
18 July 2008
Warning: Spoilers
The Dark Knight was a very good follow up to Christopher Nolan's first batman film Batman begins. I watched this last night and enjoyed it pretty much but it didn't really blew me away as compared to Tim Burton's version of Batman. I enjoyed it particularly because of the acting, music, atmosphere which were phenomenal. I gave it 8 stars because I wasn't really into this whole "dark" batman thing and Jack Nicholsan as Joker was deeply etched in my memory ever since I watched it when I was only 6.

The movie started of with a bang with Joker(Heath Ledger) as he robs a bank and killing his accomplices one by one so which led him to leaving with the entire amount of money robbed that day. Joker wasn't actually in need of the money, he was robbing mainly for the thrill of it as could be seen later in the movie when he burns down a mountain of cash. Heath ledger did an amazing job as acting the downright evil, corrupt, insane, psychotic nemesis of batman as he goes all out his way against what batman upholds: justice, even to the point where he made Harvey Dent aka half-face( Aaron Eckhart) a villain to Gotham city who was previously deemed as "white knight" of Gotham. Comparing it to Jack Nicholsan's rendition of Joker, Heath Ledger's version of Joker was more scary, evil and less funny which was similar to the later versions of the comic book.

Besides Heath Ledger, the rest of the cast were excellent. Christian Bale has done a tremendous job as our Caped Crusader as he struggles between his 2 personalities of being a rich heir and an upholder of justice which also puts his relationship with Rachel Dawes on the rocks.

Aaron Eckhart also did an amazing job as "white knight." His sense of justice was also what brought him and Rachel Dawes(Maggie Gyllenhaal) together. However, the loss of his love and with Joker's mind-playing, he was drove to insanity and became the villain that he would have previously hated. Aaron Eckhart's portrayal of Harvey Dent's as he struggles with emotions, justice and insanity brought Half-face to another level.Maggie Gyllenhaal did great replacement for Katie Holmes as Wayne's love interest Rachel Dawes, as she shows more sensitive and caring side towards Bruce but chose Harvey in the end. Michael Caine(Alfred) also delivered as the loyal butler who cares and took care of Bruce as well as Morgan Freeman(Lucius Fox), aiding Batman in the remake of his batsuit, batmobile and use of equipments and technology. Gary Oldman( Lt. James Gordon) also deserves an applaud as Batman's sidekick and police officer as both track down Joker.

In short, this is probably one of the best 2008 films but not without its flaws. Firstly, there were too many characters for the given time. Both Joker and Batman were supposedly the main cast but so was Harvey. I wished that he was given more screen time as half-faced because the ending seemed a little rushed. There should be more acknowledgement to his role. Secondly, there were times where I got confused as the film progresses and I couldn't understand the discussions between La(Chinese mobster)and Bruce as well as the significance of Joker's killings. True he killed them to lure out Batman but I couldn't understand why he chose them.

I feel that this film will appeal to audiences of a larger age group or those who read the comics. Teenagers might find it hard to understand. I had problems with it initially but after the movie, when I pieced everything together, then it started to make sense.

I Am Legend (2007)
4/10
A letdown
6 April 2008
I watched this movie twice. I first watched it in the cinema but wasn't blown away by anything in this movie. I decided to watch it a second time after my friend told me it was good and when I did, all the mistakes started presenting itself.

The story revolves around a military scientist Robert Neville who is immune to a mutated virus meant for cancer. This virus is airborne and anyone who comes in contact with it will become a blood thirsty zombie. New York city has been sealed off due to the spread of the virus and the number of zombies in it. However Neville decides to stick around the deserted city in search of a vaccine for the virus to save mankind.

Cons:

Will Smith acting reminds me of when he acted I robot. Similar character and dressing as well as attitude, which is probably why I felt it was a reminiscence, nothing special.

The zombies and animals look very animated as like it was in a video game. Badly executed! I mean come on its 2007!

Most of the film involved him walking around, trying to find food and in his house though there are times where he worked in the lab. The zombies didn't appear until later part in the movie.

The ending was too rushed.

Pros:

The only good thing about the movie is the city itself which was clearly isolated and deserted.
