Where the Wild Things Are (2009)
Where I blew my two hours
Where I blew my two hours was in the theater seeing this. I really didn't take to this movie much. The opening was okay with the little song and all. But after that it pretty much went downhill fast. The kid Max is just portrayed as a spoiled brat and it's too bad he's not likable. He just gets on your nerves. You just don't want to spend time in this kid's illusion world.
Aside from that, the monsters were too goofy to be scary, and not even goofy enough to be funny. The voices the monsters had were mostly bad and took me out of it. Also, the mother was not very good actress and neither was anyone else, really. It was just really not a good movie, except for the first five minutes. I'd say skip it unless you absolutely love the book and can't stop yourself, but otherwise not recommended. 2/10.
Silent Hill (2006)
Silent Hill was boring
The first ten minutes seemed promising, but then I was quickly let down. I didn't know the video game very well before I saw the film, but it looked interesting. I was wrong. Laura Holden is good as the lead, but other than that, the actors are not very good.
The creatures look fake and there's too much CGI. There is some nice photography and pretty cool looking set pieces, but this got boring real fast.
That's mainly because the pacing of the movie is REALLY slow, much slower than I thought it would be. There are a few good moments, but nothing to write home about. If you are a fan of the video game, you will most probably appreciate this horror movie much more than the average person. 2/10
Masters of Horror: Pelts (2006)
Argento's "Pelts"
This was not a very good episode of Masters of Horror. For starters, the acting was absolutely bad and very amateur.
Even Meat Loaf came across as stiff and unconvincing as an actor. The gore part was okay, if you are into that kind of thing, but it was too little. The nudity sex scene of the stripper and the other girl came across as cheap, too, and fake.
All in all, there's not much good to say about this, except I was sorely disappointed. The positives were that the story was kind of original about the animal pelts. But that was not enough to keep my interest for the full hour of the episode.
My Bloody Valentine (2009)
3-D is okay, film not great
This is a remake of the 1981 slasher, having to do with a maniac in a coal miner's costume killing everyone.
I liked the original better, but this one is more fun simply because of the 3-D entertainment value.
Having axes and fire come off the screen at the audience is what made it worthwhile for the ticket price, although you could have just as much fun going to an amusement park. It would be great if they could somehow make a 3D function on the DVD release somehow.
There's plenty of gore for hard-core fans, some female nudity, killings and all that. Everything what you'd typically expect for this kind of horror.
What the movie really lacks is some sort of originality. Actors are okay, good enough for this type of movie. Jaime King is particularly riveting.
Other than that, if you're not expecting anything amazing story-wise, and just want some distraction it's an OK fun way to spend 2 hours.
The Amityville Horror (2005)
okay if you haven't seen the original
This one was a surprise for me, liked it much more than I expected to. I love the original 1979 classic, and maybe that's why I like this one less because you can't help but compare to this 2005 remake.
The story starts when the Lutz family buys a beautiful new home for a really great bargain because there'd been a tragedy in the home before. The Lutz family don't care, they buy it anyway.
Then all kinds of strange supernatural happenings start to drive them crazy like the expected ghost and all that. The "spirits" start to take over and possess the family and they go nuts.
Ryan Reynolds makes it watchable because he's good, especially if you like hot men. Chloe Moretz gives a good performance too. Rachel Nichols and Jesse james have a goofy scene together, but besides that this movie is very creepy, much more than most horror films coming out today.
One scene were the girl is on the roof of the house and almost falls had me on the edge of my seat. Not a bad watch if you have nothing else to do just don't expect it to better than the 1979 one.
Funny Games (2007)
Not as good as the original
This version of "Funny Games" was directed by Michael haneke, the same director who made the superior Austrian movie.
Is this social commentary or just torture porn? I can't answer that, but I can sure say this movie is not as good as the original it's based on, even if it is nearly a shot by shot remake.
A family is tortured by two crazy dudes who make a pointless bet with the captive family that they can be killed before a certain time.
The bet could have been cut short if they had just shot them right away instead of playing sadistic games for 2 hours.
The actors are okay, Naomi Watts is her usual believable self. Even Tim Roth is bearable. Michael Pitt is particularly good. But there's just something about this remake that comes across as pointless and unnecessary.
Hit and Run (2009)
... Okay fun
Well, let's say I didn't have much expectation. I wasn't crazy about the trailer. but the film is fairly good.
The story is the bizarre tale of a woman who hit a man with her car and discovered him stuck on her bumper, based on a true story or an urban legend.
The teacher in this case is played by the solid Corrigan, whose teeth give him a feral appearance, and this is his scariest role so far.
I was pleasantly surprised by the lead actress and the events that unfolded. She's doing a fine job and she's pretty sexy. Very natural.
Worth watching, not bad at all for nightmare horror /suspense.
Don't drink and drive folks, there are lunatics you could hit out there!
