A masterpiece of cinematography
16 March 2007
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, it wasn't historically accurate, but it wasn't intended to be. There are hints of true historical events throughout, but that isn't what the film is about. Historians would likely have a field day ripping this movie apart.

The story follows Frank Millars 300 comic pretty damn closely, most scenes are composed to get the greatest stylised impact possible. The characters are made bigger than life and there are some pretty ridiculous additions to the cast (disfigured immortals, man with swords for hands, giant monsters to name a few) this just further reminds you that this is a fantasy movie "loosely" based on true events.

The pace of the movie was timed perfectly and almost 2 hours rushes by without you noticing, the movies action set pieces are well executed and main characters are given just enough background for you to care about them.

One downside to this movie is the occasional narration by David Wenham's character, who although a great actor does not possess the worlds greatest speaking voice. His tales of heroism and self sacrifice are almost made comical by the squeaky tones of his voice.

If you want to enjoy a manly tale of heroics and self sacrifice then look no further, this movie is an inspiring addition to cinemas greatest.

Superman Returns at last
18 July 2006
It's been a while and I never thought I would ever see another Superman film, but I am so relieved that Brian Singer made this.

Being a huge Superman fan, I had high expectations going into this and wasn't disappointed. Every time I heard the iconic Superman fanfare my face lit up and I was taken back to the original 1978 classic.

I am so grateful to Brian for making such a beautiful and spectacular film, his Superman was much more dynamic and the action pieces were so much more fluid. There were throwbacks to the original movies of course, some references were made to previous movies for the sake of consistency.

Verbal Kint's Lex Luthor is just the right amount of evil for Supermans nemesis, Kevin Spacey gave Lex a sense of weight and danger to the plot.

I'm now off to see it again.

Decent modern crime/horror flick resembles Seven
22 February 2005
A well thought out horror/crime/thriller that plays along the same lines as Seven. All the clues to working out the mystery are available throughout the movie - this is done in a very clever and deliberate manner.

One critical comment is the acting ability of Cary Elwes as Dr. Lawrence Gordon, his range of emotion throughout the movie is a little unbelievable at times, he comes off as wooden, which is fine in something like Hot Shots where he's playing the straight funny man, but not good when you have to use a lot of different emotions in such a short period of time.

I thought Danny Glover provided a solid supporting role and he certainly helped to add to the tension of this movie.

This movie is a must see for those that enjoyed Seven, it is just as graphic and on par in way of script and direction.

Rollerball (2002)
2/10
rollersuck
24 July 2003
Oh dear, once again a remake that hopes to rake in a few quid from a successful predecessor that does not quite work.

What a horrible film, the acting was horrible, the tension in the matches was non-existent and where was the blood and gore?!?!? Not to want to pick holes in this film *scoff* but the film is supposed to be based on an ultra violent cross of rollerblading and lacrosse, right? So where was all the violence and blood and gore, surely this film would have succeeded if Tarantino would have directed it. At least the premis of the film would not be misleading. OK, so there is some shooting and a few killings near the end, but really this film had so much more potential in it.

Klein although good as the sensitive Keanu Reeves clone from American Pie does not suit this role well, but he is not the main reason for hating this film, (he doesn't really help save it either). His range is constantly stuck between brooding and setting up to brood. Not a good characteristic if you're supposed to be an intense rollerball athlete really. Someone with more intensity or charisma would probably have made this film entertaining at least.

Poor L.L.Cool.J, I feel sorry for this guy, here is a man, who clearly wants to make the serious leap from rap star to movie star and you thought he actually had a chance after watching him in Deep Blue Sea, which has been very successful, and justly so, really good film that. But here's rollerball come to knock him back down, not good. Even though he tries to make the best out of a bad situation he is really given nothing to work with, playing second fiddle to Keanu, sorry Klien and not a good script.

What would have been good in this movie would have been if they had made a huge elaborate set with hard gritty violence that climaxed in a huge match which people really cared about the outcome, oh well.

X2 (2003)

Fan Boy Heaven

What a nice surprise, it's good to see a sequel surpass it's predecessor on screen and that is exactly what X2 has done. This is more of an Empire Strikes Back version of X Men which works very well and leaves us gagging for more.

The sequel actually had more financial backing than the original which helped Mr Singer achieve some more fancy effects that were missing from the first film. Without these effects we would never have seen Nightcrawler realised in quite the same way that he has been in this movie. From one of the opening scenes (attack in the White house) you are just hooked. Nightcrawler teleporting from room to room kicking some serious can was fantastic, a great energy filled start to a great film.

We see a lot more of Wolverine in this film too and add to his mysterious background. We also see him a lot more aggressive (which lets face it is what he is meant to be). A few cameos are thrown in for us fan boys in the form of Beast (well the human form at least), Gambit (although it was only his name that we got to see), Colossus, Shadowcat, Syren, Leech among others.

Another great thing about this movie is the switch of roles performed by some of the characters, we actually have Magneto charging into battle leading the X-Men to stop Prof. X from killing everyone!

For all those who are not followers of the comics, there are bound to be a few key points that will confuse them, like the appearance of the Phoenix, but when they bring out X3 (lets hope) all will be revealed, they can't leave it like this, can they?

One of the funniest things you are ever likely to watch
7 May 2003
What can be said about Mystery Science Theater 3000? Well lots actually, it's a very funny series where one guy and two puppets comment on B movies from between the 50's and the 80's. The pitch doesn't sound all that, but the comedic timing of these three is unparalleled. I'm not sure how many times they subjected themselves to the likes of Puma man or Space mutiny to notice every little continuity and plot hole errors, but it really pays off.

The series ran for quite a while on the Sci Fi channel on Sky, but not anymore, unfortunately the videos of these great shows is extremely hard to come by too. As such there is probably a large amount of people out there that have not had a chance to watch some of these great episodes. Word to the wise, go see them, it will be the best thing you ever did.

Rob Vam Dam is in it!
16 April 2003
Not really sure if I like this one or not, so I gave it 5/10.

There were some well choreographed fight scenes and some nice CG environments involved, but on the other hand there were some really poorly strung together stunts (where you could actually still see the safety lines attached to the actors) and some quite appalling CG work on some of the monster shots. The sometimes bad incorporation of some half hearted GC work really put the film down when they could have spent a little more time tidying up the film. One thing to mention as you've probably heard is that RVD is in this film, which is pretty cool, although he doesn't say an awful lot he seems to act better than expected. Shame they gave him such a stupid name really (The Claw) - isn't that what Jim Carrey was in Liar, Liar? You may also spot Tyler Mane (of X-Men fame) in there too. Andy On, does a fairly good job of taking over from Jet Li, but it's always hard trying to carry a sequel on your own, let alone carry on a sequel whilst replacing someone with a lot of Hollywood exposure. There was some pretty crappy acting in some parts, mostly from extras trying to react to what was on screen, but most of the main actors did ok (including all wrestlers). Overall, I'd say if you are expecting Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, go someplace else, if you want an entertaining light hearted attempt at the Super Hero genre (Green Hornett) then sure rent this out and have a laugh.

Xtra time needed on plot
14 March 2003
How disappointing, I was all ready to watch this self proclaimed adrenaline filled spy film as the trailers really beefed up the action.

What I sat through can only be described as a string of over the top stunts strung together in a series of wacky ways that do not really further the story with a sub James Bond plot that would have die hard spy fans asking for the directors head.

Vin Diesel was not convincing in his role as a sensitive daredevil ex con. He should stick to some roles with less speaking.

You will find some parts of the film entertaining, like when the completely wooden barn explodes into a ball of flames as if it had been laced with glycerine, or when Vin is seen wearing a Yeti whilst walking around Prague.

The stunts although quite spectacular at times were really over the top and would have done better if strung together onto a video of it's own entitled "Just stunts".

From Strength to Strength
14 March 2003
Peter Jackson's Movies seems to just get better and better.

I thought that Fellowship was pretty near perfect, but then I watch this and learn that it has included a lot of what the first film was lacking probably due to character introductions et al, Action.

This instalment has so much action, you may need a day off work to recover from just watching it. From the opening scene where Gandalf is tumbling down the cave with the Balrog (amazing) you know you are in for a treat. I just could not stop smiling.

The battles are much bigger and the enemies are more evil, at times attacking one another in a scene near the beginning of the film.

The work done on Gollum is just astounding, after about five minutes of trying to work out where the polygons and lines are, you kind of forget altogether that he is computer generated and feel for him as a real person. You can really see Andy Serkis' performance shine through this character.

Another hit, another must see.

Classic Horror
14 March 2003
An old film but a good one nonetheless.

Not concerned with over the top pyrotechnics or CGI ghosts and ghouls, this film delivers a great cinematic experience that has you jump out of your seat on several occasions.

It works on your nerves by introducing simple things like a constant banging sound from one of the unexplored rooms and an eerie looking wheelchair that looks uneasily out of place.

This film is not like your Freddy and Jason slash em up horror films but rather a clever psychological spook story based around a powerful family and it's history that has literally come back to haunt them.

Don't miss this classic gem.

Done wrong & Drags on
19 August 2002
Oh dear, this movie had a lot of potential, but it was really poorly put together. The acting was terrible, the substandard dialogue was shameful and the sets were just not believable. The only redeemable feature of this entire movie was the appearance of some pretty good CGI Dragons. More dragons, less dungeons. Anyway where was the guy with the red horns, he would have made this movie a lot more interesting?

Must see movie of the year
7 January 2002
I have personally not read the Lord of the rings book, but after watching this movie, I have decided to go out and buy myself a copy. This film is exactly how you expect a fantasy adventure film to be. Great performances all round, stunning SFX, no cheesy lines. In short a flawless, if long movie. Go see this film now!
