Alternative Math (2017)
A simple math question triggers huge trouble
"Alternative Math '' is a short comedy film which was released in the United States in 2017. This approximately 9 minutes movie is about diversity in education.
At the beginning of the story, Danny, who is an elementary school student, gets an F on a math test. He enters classroom and sees his math teacher, Mrs. Wells. She explains 2 + 2 is 4, not 22. Next day, his parents see her and complain about their child's test grade. Mrs. Wells tells them that the mathematically correct answer for 2 + 2 is 4. However, they said she has to consider the possibility that 22 is the right answer for the formula. So, she denies it. On the next day, the president of the school visits her. He said she is too radical, and has to be more open to other choices. Otherwise, she will be fired.
I really enjoyed this film. The story goes on chronologically, and the trouble is getting bigger and bigger by the time. I could feel the same way as Mrs. Wells, by the gap with other characters in the story. And, this confusion captivated me. I loved it.
Spielzeugland (2007)
interesting
"Spielzeugland" is a short historical film which was released in Germany in 2007. The English title is "Toyland" which is the important word in the story. This was awarded an Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film in 2009.
At the beginning of the story, two pairs of hands are playing the piano. Suddenly, the scene changes, and it turns to morning. A mother, Marian, enters her son's room to wake him up. Immediately, she realizes her son has disappeared, so she rushes downstairs. The scene goes back to the night of two children playing the piano together. Marian and David's mother
go into a room and say "They are still playing" In this room, David and Heinrich are playing a piano. David's mother says she wants David to keep practicing the piano but he can't. Since they are Jewish, they have
to go to concentration camps. Heinrich and Marian are non-Jewish so Marian told Heinrich that David and his family will go to Toyland tomorrow.
By using a non-chronological storyline, the film succeeds in giving active questions such as "Is he safe?" which makes it more interesting. I enjoyed this movie.
Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times (2017)
story of two guys life
"Two Strangers Who Meet Five Times" is a short drama film released in 2017. The movie production is in the United Kingdom but the first release there is next year in the United States.
At the beginning of the story, a white guy, Alistair, walks through a street, and stands behind a guy who is trying to take out his cash from the cashing machine. However, the guy, Samir, takes a long time. So Alistair says racist remarks and Samir leaves there angrily. After that, when Alistair finishes his final job interview, he finds out that the guy he insulted in the street is the CEO.
To be honest, I don't like this at first, but every time I watch it, I like it more and more. The movie has unique characteristics with the movie storyline because it
doesn't go on chronologically. By this technique, watchers have multiple active questions, and it makes people focus on the film, and is more emotional. I'm pretty sure that no one should miss this.
The Lunch Date (1989)
A Day for An Old Lady
"The Lunch Date" is an American short film from December 1989. This movie was selected for preservation for the cultural and historical value by the Library of Congress in the United States.
At the beginning of the story, an old lady is walking in a station toward a train terminal after she checked the time schedule board and her ticket. Then, she bumps into a man who is standing in the middle of the street. He tries to help her to pick up her belongings that she drops, but she refuses. This accident makes her miss her train, and when she leaves the station, she can't find her wallet. She goes to a cafeteria and takes a salad. She pays it, and when she takes a seat, she realizes that she forgets a fork, so she leaves the seat. When she returns, she sees a guy is sitting in her seat, and is eating her salad.
I like this story because this movie amazingly shows how the old lady's feelings and her view of the world changes without saying it. This is a nice movie that I can recommend with confidence.
Lifted (2006)
Comical story
Lifted is an animated short Sci-Fi Film produced by Pixar in 2006. The computer graphics are very beautiful.
There is a house on the steppe in the countryside. Suddenly, the swing and the weather cock begin to move back and forth at night. Then, a flying saucer appears in the sky at that moment. It beams a light-ray. It hit a guy who is sleeping in his bed. His body starts to float, and fly toward a window. Unfortunately, the guy's head bumps into the wall next to the window. Inside the UFO, a green skin alien which looks like a turtle is confused and struggles with numerous switches. Next to him, there is a deep green alien which looks like slime checking his clipboard.
I like this film because of the beautiful computer graphics and the funny storyline. The graphics are so smooth and realistic, so I could watch without any frustration. In addition, every failure that
characters made in the story made me laugh a lot. I do recommend this film because this will amaze everyone by the graphics, and make us laugh with the comical story.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
Me time
"Fish Out of Water" is a short film that was released in New Zealand in 2005. This movie is approximately 8 minutes long, and the actors don't speak at all.
A man commutes from his home to his office by boat because he values and enjoys his alone time. One day, a blonde woman, who generally goes to her office by car, rides his boat to commute with no traffic jam. The next day, two people are waiting at the pier to ride the boat. Then the next day, there are three people.
I like this movie because this short film succeeds to tell the characters' feelings and thoughts using only the only actors' expressions and background music. Also, this movie tells me how important it is to cherish
alone time. Due to the pandemic, I had too much alone time, and I was eager to be a member of the group. So, I started to talk or chat with my friends and acquaintances more than before. However, this film made me realize the value of me time.
I am not sure that everyone gets a lesson from this movie but, this film will definitely amaze you with their efforts.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
So Deep and Interesting
"Three Days in Kamakura" is a short family film made in Japan in 2012. In the movie, characters speak in English and Japanese mainly.
At the beginning of the movie, a guy, David, is sitting and drinking a cup of orange juice next to his sleeping wife. He looks at her anxiously, and then he leaves home with garbage to throw away. But after he leaves, a neighbor, Mrs. Yamada, takes it from the garbage station and puts it back in front of David's home. While David begins working and welcoming his students, his wife realizes their neighbor has returned the garbage. After he finishes his work, his colleague
passes a key to lock the workplace. David goes home and notices that the garbage he left this morning is returned by Mrs. Yamada.
The movie has a complicated storyline with many active questions, and it is a good example of the "Show, Don't Tell" method. For example, David's wife's
scar on her stomach tells us she has experience of surgery, and it also reminds us that she can't have a baby. I enjoys this film, and the style of not telling everything in dialogue.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
I really enjoyed watching this
"I'll Wait for the Next One" is a French romance film directed by Phillip Correindy in 2002. The original title of this only five minutes movie is "J'attendrai le Suivant".
At the beginning, a lonely lady walks slowly and tiredly. When she steps on the elevator to the subway, she passes a young couple. She gives a jealous look to them. After she gets on a train and the train leaves, a guy starts to speak loudly, and starts to introduce himself for dating. He says his name is Antonie, and he is 29 years old. He talks about his salary, his advantages such as he is good at cooking, and what kind of person he is looking for. A guy suddenly stands up, and says he wouldn't mind giving his wife, but Antonie deals well with him. While the lonely woman is listening to his speech, she starts smiling.
I like this movie because of its great storyline and amazing actors. The story is totally unpredictable until the end. Actors acted very well in the movie. These elements keep me interested in the movie, so I really enjoyed watching it.
Knick Knack (1989)
one of early works by Pixar
"Knick Knack" is a short-animated comedy film by Pixar in 1989. This movie is 3 minutes and half long.
At the beginning of the film, there are many souvenirs from countries with a warm climate which gather at the same place on a shelf. There is one more ornament, which is a snow globe with a snowman, and it is a little far from the others. One of the ornaments, Miami girl, invites him to join them. To go there, he has to get out from the dome. At first, he tries to break the glass with Igloo. He tries a hammer, a concrete breaker, a welder, and dynamite, but he fails. Suddenly, he realizes he is at the edge of the shelf, and starts to fall.
The movie has animation quality and cute characters. Even though this film is made almost 35 years ago, the quality of computer graphic is beautiful. The characters move without any delay, so I watch this without any stress. In addition, this film succeeds to show characters as very cute. Especially, the behavior and action of the snowman is so cute. I'm not sure everyone will like this but, I do recommend this.
Father and Daughter (2000)
Heartwarming Short Animated Movie of One Family
"Father & Daughter '' is an animated film that was released in 2000. This short family movie is approximately 9 minutes long.
At the beginning of the story, the father is cycling with his daughter on the riverbank. Suddenly, he leaves his daughter at the side of the river, then he disappears. After that, his daughter visits the place where her father left her constantly to see her father again. Even when it is raining or windy, she goes there. When she becomes an adult, she continues it. However, she can't find him, so she keeps waiting for him.
I like this movie because of the drawing and plot. The first reason is drawing. It is elegant and well designed. It is generally a shadow picture, and makes me a little emotional and imagine a lot of things. The second reason is plot. It is perfectly well-formed and succeeds to show how the daughter is eager to see her father again.
I am pretty sure that nobody will be disappointed by watching this film. The story is moving, and the drawing is so suggestive and beautiful. No one shouldn't miss this film.
