Sweethearts (1997)
One of My fav's! Garafalo fan for life!
Janeane Garofalo stars in this movie as a young woman who answers a personal ad in the paper as a sort of 'last chance'. She meets the man at a café but doesn't tell him who she is right away making for some light hearted fun before things get really interesting. That's already more info than you need. Janeane Garofalo does an amazing job in this movie! This is the best I've ever seen her. Her performance is funny, whimsy, and dark all at the same time. She shows a vulnerability here that I've never seen in her before and it fits her fine. The film has a mystery ending, one that leaves you wondering without giving you many clues and this is one of the few imperfections in this movie. This is a love/compassion search story that's better and more watchable than any that quickly come to mind.
Running with Scissors (2006)
A mediocre book that should never had been made into a movie
Let me first say that I read the book AFTER I saw the movie. I did this because after seeing the movie I knew the book just HAD to be better (it was, marginally). The film seemed disjointed and forced. It felt as if the screenwriter had no idea how to put this book into a movie. The story really isn't much of a story as much as it is a bunch of funny weird stuff, that is highly implausible I might add. The movie changed some things form the book as movies will do but there are very important parts left out and inconsequential parts added in to the movie. Also the time line is all wrong which is probably why I got the disjointed feeling watching the film. All in all this might be an enjoyable movie IF you've read the book and mistake scene recognition for actual enjoyment. Otherwise this is a film that's better rented. You're sure to chuckle here and there, but overall this movie is a letdown.
The Colbert Report (2005)
Like the really nice fat girl with a great personality, you want to like it
You want to like this show. I like Colbert, I think he has a lot of comic talent. I also think making a spin off of sorts to the daily show was a good idea. Problem is the format of the show. It really does't allow Colbert to use the talent that made us like him. The "Word" segments don't work at all and you can tell by the audience's reaction. This runs way to long. Also Colbert has adopted this smug, 'I'm better than you' attitude which isn't funny at all. Where Colbert shines though is in the interviews. This gives him a chance to be off the cuff and he's very good at that. Even if some of it is planned such as the famous "Gravitas Off" he did with Stone Phillips, it gives him a chance to play off of another person and it works well. The show is still new and it may find it's niche yet. In all honesty I didn't like John Stewart when he first took over The Daily Show. I will check in with The Colbert Report at least weekly because I do see a lot of potential. Right now potential is all it has going for it.
The Caller (1987)
Suspense Like You Will Never Know
The suspense of this movie made me late for work, when I got to work I discovered everyone else was late due to this movie being so suspenseful! The movie description tells you all you need to know. The end is something you must see only because I did, and it's only fair you do too. Will say this though; I didn't see it coming. There really isn't much more to say and I don't want to spoil this for any of you so I will most certainly not do that. The acting is decent, and the direction is very good so this is not by any means a waste of time. I say that because I know this will be the initial reaction of most people.
Elizabethtown (2005)
Would've been a great video
I don't know how much worse Ashton Kutcher could've made this film so I still can't see why he was fired and replaced by Bloom. Anyway, there is a love story here told by great writing but acted out by people who sound as if they don't believe what they're saying. There is no chemistry (perhaps a product of switching lead actors?). Crowe (my favorite director still) seems distracted, so much so that nothing really gets the attention it deserves. I remember little about Elizabethtown or the people in it. Then there's the music. That as always is great. Scenes scored perfectly by songs that you would not expect to find in a film or movie such as this, but Crowe is the master of that. At least this shows he wasn't completely asleep at the wheel.
Stealth (2005)
Should've rented Battlefield Earth, would be cheaper
Good special effects are the only plus in this film, but compared to all the other special effect movies out this didn't really even do that well for that either (Like Batttlefield Earth). Terrible plot and story, full of holes and questions (Like Battlefield Earth). Wasted the talents of it's finest actor (Like Battlefield Earth). This was just one of those inexplicably terrible movies that only come along once every few years, it seems to have the making of a good movie but falls flat on it's face (like...yeah you know). The film gives you no one to root for because it's some of it's heroes and villains change. I fear that if I say more I'll give too much away.
