Nope (2022)
Beautifully shot sci-fi horror flick
The first thing that I noticed the moment the film started was how beautiful the cinematography was. Every shot looked aesthetically pleasing and the way it is used to build tension even in supposedly mundane parts of the film was really good.
I also really loved the design of Jean Jacket, the way it folds itself into something that looks like a UFO made a really nice bait and switch for it not being a UFO but in fact an extra terrestrial living creature. However, the execution of the bait and switch could've been better, it wasn't really a big reveal and it definitely could've been if done right.
Another thing is the first hour of the film does drag on a lot, which takes off a few marks in my opinion. Spends too much time unnecessarily developing characters and plot, and sometimes just lets scenes linger when they don't need too. Could've definitely used that wasted time for more scenes with the creature.
7/10 - it's a good film, would watch again but it's nothing exemplary.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
An amazing horror series you can get lost in
I loved every moment of this show. The atmosphere was dark, mysterious and terrifying. Even giving scenes that are in the middle of the day an air of tension. Every scene has the potential for a scare and it kept me on the edge of my seat.
The characters were captivating and flawed in the best and most juicy of ways. A big thing for me was all their reactions seemed real. At no point was my immersion in the series broken because a character made a completely stupid decision, like characters commonly do in the horror genre, and if they do something you cannot understand it is purposeful because no one else in the show yet understands why a character did a certain thing.
It took an incredibly interesting perspective on how people can remain haunted by ghosts and what ghosts are, what they can be and what they symbolise. It was amazing. I cannot recommend this show enough.
Assassin's Creed: Rogue (2014)
Story feels rushed
Unlike other assassins creed games, this game only has 6 sequences. Six is not enough for a story with such potential; an assassin turned Templar. A lot of information was thrown at me all at once and it tried its best to connect assassins creed 3 to 4 but it just happened too quickly.
Another thing is the maps, it has 3 large maps and the story does not naturally make you explore all of the map. Leaving huge amounts of unexplored areas wasted by the end of the story.
Apart from those criticisms, the game is still very fun to play, the game mechanics are fluid as any assassins creed game and the side activities are generally quite fun despite being a bit of a grind at the end.
Saints Row (2022)
Mindless fun with a bunch of fun characters
This game is overhated in my opinion. It's not a year defining game or anything but it's fun and kind of reminds me of sunset overdrive with certain directions they took with some missions, dialogue and character designs. The story is short and silly and doesn't waste time, can't give it too much slack as I legitimately enjoyed it.
The character customisation is amazing, it's the first time I've ever been able to make a character in a game that has actually bore some kind of resemblance to myself. Vehicle customisation was also a great feature for me as I spent way too much time making fun colourful cars and tanks. I would recommend this game to someone who just wants to have some mindless fun.
Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
Too much set up
This film spends over 3/4 of the film setting up the plot. You could watch just the first and last 20 minutes of the film and get the same experience. The action just gets started in the last 20-30 minutes. As a result, there isn't actually that many scary scenes. The few scares there were though we're actually pretty good in my opinion but obviously just not enough.
I also want to add that the character Chris was incredibly cringe. I couldn't tell if she was just written poorly or if it was because the acting was bad but every time she was on screen I got second hand embarrassment.
Overall, the film is pretty mid.
