This Place Rules (2022)
amazing as expected
This documentary was amazing (as expected of Andrew) and highlights a really key moment in American history. Andrew truly has a gift of getting people to say what they really think on camera and he lets people speak their minds. They're represented as they are, and a lot of the time they make a fool of themselves by themselves. Some of my favorite moments included the dichotomy between ronin (???) and the little boy from the Q family. It was shocking to see a normal, well adjusted kid having fun and then a child who's been influenced so much by his parents insane fantasies that he doesn't even sound like a child anymore. No child should be thinking about the things he was reciting (seemingly from memory). I truly feel bad for these kids who are growing up in households like that and I worry for their futures. Another favorite moment was at the end with the guy who was a convicted sex offender claiming every political figure he doesn't like is a pedophile. I think it really highlights the projection so many of these kinds of people have. I'm so excited for more content from Andrew. He's truly inspiring. Definitely give this documentary a watch! And if you want more from Andrew he has a YouTube channel called channel five with some more lighthearted interviews.
Nope (2022)
One of my new favorite horror films
I'd like to urge anyone going to see this not to engage with any of its media to the best of your ability. I'm sure you've already seen the trailer but try to avoid anything else until you see it because getting to sit and watch the whole thing unfold is really an incredible experience.
I'm unsure why there are so many negative reviews?? The acting was great (though the dialogue was difficult to understand at times but on a second viewing things were clearer-I attribute this to simply my own difficulties with heavy accents), the cinematography was outstanding and the use of sound effects and music was stunning. The plot was simple, but interesting in my opinion and I felt entertained the entire time watching it. Could it have been better? Sure, but every movie can be better in some way.
One of my favorite things about nope is that it's creative. It's different and a little weird but it's something I've never seen before. In a world where movies are becoming monotonous in their recycled plots, remakes and sequels, nope was a refreshing watch and I was excited that I was seeing something new and eccentric.
My least favorite thing was that there wasn't enough mystery. I am a big believer in leaving things up to the viewers imagination, and while this was employed many times, some scenes I think could have been better without seeing the antagonist.
All in all, I think this is a great movie. If you like horror movies and you like sort of weird eccentric movies then I think you'll really enjoy nope. I would say this definitely deserves a watch in the theatre at least once.
Our Flag Means Death: Wherever You Go, There You Are (2022)
even at the sad parts I was laughing
This episode emotionally destroyed me but in the best way. I love Ed wandering about sadly in Stede's clothes and even though it was meant to be a sad episode, we of course had sprinklings of comedy throughout to help keep the mood light. I have to say my favorite moments are Ed's song and Ed's Robert Pattinson-esque Batman-like makeup. I was furiously yelling no at my screen but bursting into laughter at how silly he looked as well. As usual, this show balances real emotional moments so well with comedy.
Our Flag Means Death: Act of Grace (2022)
NO MORE QUEERBAITING!!!
When my friend first told me this show had gay characters I truly believed it was hinted at or wishful thinking or a side character who we never see develop much other than being the "gay best friend" trope. I was wrong. I was so wrong and I love it. This show grabbed me by the face and gave me a huge gay kiss and wasn't shy about it and I absolutely adore that we are finally seeing shows featuring gay main characters who are proud and unashamed to be gay. If we do not have more episodes like this one in season two I'm going to write David Jenkins myself.
Our Flag Means Death: We Gull Way Back (2022)
my favorite episode maybe (ep 10 fights for the spot as well)
This episode is simultaneously the most infuriating to watch and also has me kicking my legs and hugging my pillows. Without spoiling anything, the end of the episode is so so sweet and I can't listen to The Chain anymore without feeling emotional.
Our Flag Means Death (2022)
I love gay pirates
To say that this show is good representation for the lgbtq community is an understatement. It's probably the first and only show I have seen with a non-binary character, and the first show I'd ever seen where homophobia was basically nonexistent. To be a queer person watching this show is such a refreshing delight because of its lack of coming out narrative or agonizing emphasis on the struggles of being queer. There is not one but FOUR (maybe even five) lgbtq relationships in this show! It's lighthearted, funny (in a way that doesn't use queerness as comedy), and if you love pirates you're going to love this show. It's a really fun time and I adore that it's celebrating queer joy. We get to see queer people just being themselves without judgement. I'm so incredibly excited for season two and I can't wait to see more of Taika Waititi as Blackbeard because he kills the role. He and Rhys have so much genuine affection for each other and I can't wait to see where season two takes us.
First Kill (2022)
if you like vampire diaries, supernatural or twilight you'll definitely like this show!!!
If you're into the sort of cheesy supernatural shows like the ones listed above then you'll definitely like this show! The hate it has gotten online is completely blown out of proportion (and most likely because it features two lesbians as main characters, rather than centering men in the show). The two main characters are likable, and they each have unique personalities and real chemistry. It doesn't feel like you're watching two straight women pretend to be lesbians. The writing, plot and editing choices could obviously be better, but the show isn't meant to be some kind of lesbian vampire masterpiece-it's supposed to be fun, entertaining, and kinda campy and I definitely think it achieves that. I love that it showcases a lesbian relationship that isn't overshadowed by a coming out story. So often we get shows featuring queer characters but there's this huge coming out story that can become tiring for queer audiences to watch (heartstopper, while an enjoyable show, had this issue). I think I would've enjoyed this show more when I was younger, but that isn't to say older audiences won't find it nostalgic or enjoyable! Definitely give it a try. I hope that Netflix actually renews this show for a second season because they keep canceling shows with lesbian representation.
