The Seeding (2023)
Such A Blatant Rip Off Of Women In The Dunes
I hunter around to see if the director had at least acknowledged how immensely similar this film is to the Japanese masterpiece women in the Dunes, because it seems like he's hoping the film is too old & foreign for European people to know it. He only brings it up when directly questioned about it, almost as if he hadn't thought about it before, despite it being a first date movie between him & his now wife. Sneaky. He seems to think this is far more original than it is, which leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It could have been good, if it wasn't such a generic rip off of a truly great work of cinema.
False Positive (2021)
Just Say You're Terrified Of Pregnancy & Women
The bad reviews reveal the psyche of the viewers; the state of squeamish mindsets. Just say you're terrified of women's bodies, of blood, of babies born & unborn. Just say you can't stomach a woman's body when it's not just there to lust or commit violence over. Just say you can't bear to see Daddy Brosnan (who is phenomenal) get beaten up & a man left with all the responsibilities.
The ending is phenomenal; completely appropriate. No, it is nothing like a Lars Von Trier film. Good lord. Ignore that comparison. It is an Illana Glazer & John Lee film, with a good heaping dose of certain fellow Jewish (Glazer is of Ashkenazi Jewish descent) filmmakers' classic paranoid pregnancy thriller.
Immaculate pacing, so
many moments of amazing actors being so damn creepy I was recoiling. Some genuinely chilling moments & the perfect payoff. I loved this film & wish it had the rating it actually deserved. It will get the acclaim it deserves eventually.
Tinnitus (2022)
This is NOT a horror
The reason for this poor rating is entirely due to the fact that this film is promoted as a horror; when in fact it is not. A psychological drama, verging on thriller? Yes. But a horror? Absolutely not. I kept waiting for the horror, & it never arrived, despite a very intriguing, experimental opening scene & credits. I was really excited to see the horror unfurl, yet it never, ever came. A brief moment of violence right at the end does not, & never will, make this film into a horror. Very disappointing, as I was extremely excited to see this film; the concept is intriguing. I appreciate films with strong female leads, the setting was gorgeous, acting was superb but IT IS NOT A HORROR. Very annoying, very misleading, so I gave it a four.
The Stranger (2022)
Almost Flawless In Every Way
The editing, cinematography, acting, writing, sound design & score in this film is absolute perfection. Impatient people won't appreciate this incredibly controlled, thoughtful slow burn & I wish they wouldn't write it off so harshly. Not everyone needs explosions & carnage in everything they watch.
I was absolutely mesmerised from the get go & couldn't take my eyes off The Stranger, despite having a short attention span. At times, it reminded me of the work of my favourite living director, Kioshi Kurosawa, a master of crime & slow, creeping horror, with little touches that make you say "what did I just see?. The dream sequences in particular are absolutely fascinating & remind me of my own dreams. Abrupt edits & changes in sound are used to incredible effect.
Tom Wright is a spectacular & precise director with an incredible eye, I am so excited to see more of his work. And Oliver Coates - I hope you read this - you are a MASTER of sound & I am so pleased to find your soundcloud. Thank you.
Significant Other (2022)
A Holy Trinity of Cinematography, Editing & Sound Design
Significant Other is a divinely delicious treat for lovers of gorgeous cinematography, jaw-dropping editing & sound all merging together in the most perfect ways. I just... wow. This is a series if matches made in heaven.
Add really, REALLY superb acting from Monroe (who I have adored since It Follows) & Lacey, (who is kind of a goober but lightbulbs go off about how perfectly cast he is as the film progresses) in the most beautiful setting.
I really don't want to say anything that could give anything about this movie away, because not knowing what you're walking into was such a delight for me.
This film utterly defies categorisation & is filled with every kind of emotion imaginable. I am in awe of these director/writers & NEED to know everything about them, now.
Oliver Coats is a brilliant, brilliant composer, I can't WAIT to see more from everyone involved in this project. Seriously. Awesome.
Family Dinner (2022)
Feels like a student short film made into a movie
Obvious, obvious, obvious. What a terrible disappointment. No atmosphere, no tension, no surprises. The cold, bland, sterile home environment mirrors the essence of this film.
I should have gone with my gut & judged the appearance of the director - (bow tie + a goatee, never a good sign) in this case, you can indeed judge a book by it's cover. One brief moment of great practical effects was whisked away from our vision almost immediately.
Don't waste your time or money.
Crimes of the Future (2022)
Gorgeous, profound, familiar.
The kind of people that rate a masterpiece such as this poorly are the type of people that enjoy mass produced, superficial banalities. They would rather see a man with ears all over his body that have no real function dancing to inane, accessible, simple beats than to be fascinated by the intimate dance of consensual surgery and an unsettling, gorgeous myriad of tones. This is a very autobiographical film, and speaks to all who cannot understand the fanatical obsession with truly terrible art, literature, music and cinema, which is somehow always popular, reproduced and exploited in the machine of consumerism, played over and over on generic channels while true genius, true talent is too often ignored, reviled and hidden away.
To anyone who has seen Crash, Naked Lunch, Videodrome, Existenz, nothing here is surprising, shocking or disturbing. It is familiar, comforting, thrilling, fascinating and incredibly beautiful. This is all of Cronenberg's threads coming together in a most perfect work.
My body has been attacking itself, trying to kill itself in an excruciatingly painful manner my entire life. I understand being hooked up to machines, my veins pumped full of biologic matter, having parts of me cut away bit by bit. The mere act of consuming food causing discomfort so immense you want to die. Fighting my DNA, the body's urges and demands. The idea that Cronenberg plants here, among so many other brilliant, important concepts, that there may be a way to live in harmony with my condition, even if only in a psychological sense, is both breathtaking and liberating.
We need people like Cronenberg, to create media that offers an entirely different way of thinking, of perception. It is a shame most of the people rating this film can't seem to see beyond their own prudish squeamishness and inability to stretch their tight, puckered minds.
Incidentally, I have recently embraced the fact I am by true nature nocturnal. I have always been, since birth. This acceptance of my true self and my body's innate rhythms horrifies and disturbs others, who demand I try things I have diligently attempted for decades without success in order to "fix" me, even though living this way does no one any harm and requires nothing of others. I am finally able to get enough sleep and think clearly, feel alive instead of zombified from lack of rest. So many years wasted, full of suffering and discomfort, for the sake of other people and their fanatical attachment to "normality."
People are so overwhelmingly afraid of change, of evolution, of the "other." I am not. Neither is Cronenberg. The messages and ideas within his films have helped me accept, and even embrace, my scars, my differences in the most profound way. I find his films incredibly moving, violent and obscene to the timid eye yet laced with tenderness and a strange purity, deeply philosophical, most encouraging of curiosity, true freedom, expansion of thought, the greatest of human traits.
If only more people had the vision and bravery to explore the deep, tender meat of body beauty and the evolution of humanity, technology and the body in this way.
