Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I enjoyed the fan service and epic action sequences
The acting was top notch and there were some amazing scenes in this movie. I am not a fan of The Last Jedi which really messed up the overall narrative of the Skywalker saga but JJ Abrams did a decent job of getting the series back on track. Rian Johnson really f'd things up.
There are many flaws that people will point out but don't take movies so seriously. Even the original trilogy which I've watched multiple times had many plot holes and flaws. I have 2 lightsabers, a lot of Star Wars memorabilia and even asked my wife to dress up as Princess Leia for a public lightsaber fight in Washington Park. So I really LOVE Star Wars.
Although I'm not completely satisfied with the most recent trilogy, Rise of Skywalker was probably the best we could get after The Last Jedi. Enjoy it for what it is: a sci-fi adventure in a galaxy far, far away. We always have the original trilogy that started it all.
The Walk (2015)
A fascinating look at Philippe Petit's dream and a beautiful tribute to the Twin Towers
Robert Zemeckis continue's to be of the best director's in Hollywood. He has made a beautiful movie and even though you know what happens, he keeps you gripping your armrests and holding your breath until the very end. Joseph Gordon-Levitt shines in this role along with the rest of the cast.
I suppose this review is also for the people who were in New York during 9/11. As a survivor of 9/11, I couldn't help but cry at the end of the movie. Seeing the Twin Towers rising in all their glory, basking in the sunset and reminding us of their beauty that so many of us took for granted, brought back so many emotions for me. They were like old friends saying hello and goodbye one last time.
Thank you Zemeckis for telling a great story, making a beautiful movie and bringing back old friends to life!
If possible, go see it in IMAX! You won't regret it!
Battleship (2012)
You sunk my battleship!!
This movie was the perfect way to give an early kick start to the summer blockbuster season! Forget all the critics and pretentious movie buffs. Go in with the expectations for a fast paced movie that grips you from the beginning and offers some kick ass action sequences. If you've always wanted to see US Navy destroyers and battleships in action, then this is the movie for you!
There is a sequence that pays homage to the original board game. The aliens wear pretty cool metallic suits and their arsenal of weapons is limited but very destructive.
The story is quite simple but action is all you need for a movie of this scale. If you like Independence Day and want to have a similar fun and exciting cinema experience, then check it out!
