Aakrosh (2010)
3/10
Its not inspired... Its entirely copied
22 March 2011
When I saw Aakrosh, I thought to myself 'Wow Priyadarshan can make some really good hard-hitting films. He made some really good comedies but now his comedies are working no more, so he has exploited a new genre and that too very well'. But then I read somewhere that this film is inspired from the Hollywood movie Mississippi Burning. So I brought that film and saw it to compare and contrast and I bet you there is nothing to contrast. Aakrosh is straight life almost scene to scene and dialogue to dialogue from Mississippi Burning. The only difference is that Mississippi Burning deals with civil rights in America during 1964 and Aakrosh deals with honour killings, which was a hot topic at the time of its making.

However the acting by both Ajay Devgn and Akshaye Khanna did justice to Gene Hackman and William Defoe's acting. But all in all it is a straight lift (lifts from Hollywood disgust me). You can make films after being inspired that's a whole different story, but lifts are uncreative and something to be ashamed of.

You should have the guts to claim that the movie is a lift. First you copy something, which in this case, by the way, is a blatant act of plagiarism, and then you claim it as your own is shameful.

Indian film makers who do such heinous acts should be ashamed of themselves. Moreover they should stop making films if they have run out of ideas, or at least credit the film from which they are copying.

I have changed my rating from 6 to 3 after watching Mississippi Burning.

Golmaal 3 (2010)
4/10
A really bad movie
6 November 2010
When Golmaal 2 was released I thought that it had devalued the brand Golmaal, but Golmaal 3 is beyond any doubt the worst of the lot. I can't imagine such a trash movie from the cast and crew of Golmaal - the original movie. Tushar Kapoor ceases being funny after an extent and the director has not realised this and has given him an extended role. The action is mindless and has been stretched too far. Ajay Devgan is such a good actor and he has been completely wasted. Humour is given to the public is very small doses. Johnny Lever is the saving grace of the movie. I don't think anyone should waste his or her money on such a waste of a movie. I am a big bollywood fan and it has happened only twice in my 25 years of life (and believe me I have seen many films) that I have wanted to leave the theatre in between a film. To some extent it is a "inspired" from Hollywood movie Yours mine and our.

In all don't waste your money and time and don't go for the movie and I seriously hope that if Rohit Shetty is planning on making Golmaal 4, he comes up with something better.

Chintu Ji (2009)

Heart Wrenching
13 September 2009
I wonder why such beautiful and fresh films are made in such a few numbers in Bollywood. It is a beautiful script with power packed performance by Chintu ji aka Rishi Kapoor. Set in the small village .... err.... town... Hathbahedi, a place where there is still "Ram Rajya". They call the only famous person ever born in their town... Rishi Kapoor ... and treat him like god. They change their lifestyle because of him, even put their religion at stake and the "big filmstar" is just using them. In the end however good wins over evil and he changes. A good movie which I can watch again for its comic timing and Rishi Kapoor's acting. Kulraj Randhawa looks stunning and has acted well as well. She will go a long way in the film industry if she chooses her films wisely and does not opts for a skin show. Priyanshu Chatterjee is one of the best newcomers in the industry and it breaks my heart to see that he gets so few films. He is a powerhouse of talent but still I get to see him in so few movies.

Overall a very good movie, well made too. These kind of movies should be promoted more and should be made more often.

Kaminey (2009)

A Letdown
14 August 2009
I don't know why the critics have started giving 4 stars to every other movie. This movie is nowhere near a four starer. Rang de, Chak de, Lagaan Swades etc. are some of the 4 starer movies. Compare Kaminey with this and you will be disappointed as this is a 2 star movie. The plot is over complicated and the viewer feels like a fool for the first 30-45 minutes. Extracting acting from actors is Bhardwaj's forte and he has done that in this movie no doubt. But the plot is ordinary and very complicated. I went to see another Vishal Bhardwaj movie after Makdee, Maqbool and Omkara with huge expectations but I was disappointed. He just tries to ape Hollywood style film making but fails miserably. There are some lose strings too and he leaves too many things to viewer's understanding. Shahid however excels in the movie. Overall a huge disappointed. When I entered the cinema hall it was a house full, but as the movie ended it was already half empty. I guess this says a lot about the movie.

Delhi-6 (2009)
4/10
A bad movie
21 February 2009
A lot was expected from Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra after the phenomenal Rang De Basanti but Delhi 6 was a disappointment. He was not able to deliver this time and he has to learn that RDB like endings aren't going to work every time although the hero did eventually came back to life after visiting heaven in this one. I must say that the Bachchans are running a package deal in the industry. In the recent Abhishek movies I remember only Dostana (given that I did not had guts to watch Drona) where I did not saw Amitabh. However about the movie....

It did not had a story at all, and I don't know why was it named Delhi 6 as it could have been made anywhere (meaning there was no Delhi feel in the movie). There were riots, there was Monkey man, there was ramlila all over in the movie but there was no story. Although Mehra did try to give a message through Monkey man but I feel he went overboard with him. Sonam looked fabulous although she did not much of a role in the film and Abhishek was OK. Vijay raj was brilliant in his role as the inspector although other very good actors like Om Puri, Supriya Pathak, Waheeda Rehman et al were underused. The songs have to be good as they are A R Rehman's. They might make the movie an average hit. The only time it felt that the movie was shot in Delhi was when they showed Red fort, Jama Masjid and India gate. Overall a very big disappointment. I expected a lot from Mehra, but he failed to deliver.

a very good movie
10 February 2009
Abhay Deol has to be truly commended for his recent films. He has come up with really good movies for his last four films, and thats a rare feat in bollywood these days. This movie should be appreciated for its storytelling, acting, and cinematography and the pace at which the movies moves. Many have described this movie as 'coming of age' and rightly so. The language used in this films is not for kids and it does not seems anywhere that the language used was forced. It fit in the script perfectly. And the good part about the film's language is that the actors do not put any emphasis on the 'adult words'. All the words were used with ease, as people do in their daily routine. Abhay Deol was very good and so were other actors. I think this is a season of lookalikes, First we got Aishwarya lookalike, we are hearing that Salman Khan is launching Katrina lookalike and now Mahie (Paro) of this movie has a striking similarity to Tabu. People have said that the second half was a little slow, it was not as fast as the first half but it was equally good if not better.

All in all a good movie and youngsters will enjoy this movie.

Heroes (2008)

could have been better
8 December 2008
It breaks my heart to give a 5 star rating to this film. Again like many other Bollywood movies, this one had great potential. The story was new and the movie boasted of such a terrific star cast in Salman Khan, Preity Zinta, Sunny Deol and Mithun da. I would like to request bollywood directors to please never cast Salman again as a Sardar because he did not suited the Surd image at all. He did not looked like a sikh for one moment. And I really fail to understand that why has Sunny Deol to be portrayed as Hulkesque in every movie. Breaking ground with his punches, fighting 15-20 guys despite being a handicap come on.... give us a break. Alright he is strong, he terrorized the entire Pakistan in Gadar, but guys get over it. Let him be a normal man again. Otherwise, the story was good, and I felt that this movie could have had a Rang de Basanti kind of impact. I wish that it would have been made better with some more emotional quotient. This could have been the movie of the year, but bollywood being bollywood, made it what it is. Its alright, we are getting there slowly but still getting there (Hollywood level).

Sorry Bhai! (2008)
9/10
Beautiful
1 December 2008
Sorry bhai is the testimony to the fact that Bollywood is moving forward and the new crop of directors on the right track. The performances have all been wonderful. Sharman Joshi is developing as a good actor and if he chooses his films wisely he can one day become one of the best. Sanjay Suri proves that he is the best from among all model turned actors. The chemistry between Boman Irani and Shabana Azmi is better than what is between most actors and actresses today. They both look a very good pair on screen. Chitrangadha Singh is not only a good actress but is one of the most beautiful ladies of Bollywood and she proves that one can look sensual and hot without shedding clothes. Sharman Joshi has a tinge of comedy in his acting which is only going to help him achieve greatness.

Now about the story and direction. The story is fresh and is shot beautifully. The family relations - between brothers, mother and son, father and son, husband and wife - have been portrayed excellently. There is not an instance in the film where you will get bored. A very good script supported by some really good performances makes Sorry Bhai a real good movie. A must watch.

This year has given us some really good 'not so commercial' movies and Sorry Bhai can be said to be the top runners among them.

It breaks my heart to see films like Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna and other crappy movies like those getting nominated and winning awards just because they are made by a known director and are under a big banner whereas some really good movies and performances like this one just sits and watch. Its high time we have an Oscar like award for Bollywood movies where awards are given to performances, characters and not people who are influential.

Excellent Flick
29 November 2008
Director Dibankar Banerjee comes up with another excellent movie with Oye Lucky.. after Khosla. If Khosla was good this one is even better. Abhay Deol has carved a niche for himself with films like Ek Chalis, Manorama, and now this one. Brilliant script was supported by brilliant acting. I am really happy that Bollywood has started making films the Hollywood style. The still photographs used in the movie was something new to Bollywood and it suited the script perfectly. Abhay Deol is turning out to be a good actor and he now can be placed in the category of his illustrious cousins. Manjot Singh and Manu Rishi made an impressive debut as Young Lucky and Bangali respectively. The humor of this movie was of utmost quality. a really good script supported by some brilliant performances by the now legend Paresh Rawal, Abhay Deol and others. A must watch for everyone.

The scenes that I enjoyed especially were of Young Lucky and his father.

I don't know what has happened to Subhash Ghai. You cant believe that he is the same guy who made movies like Karz, Khalnayak, Ram Lakhan and Taal. The thing that was good about the movie was Salman Khan's acting. This is the first movie after Tere Naam where he was not Salman Khan and he was the character that he was playing. However he started as his overacting self but mellowed down as the movie progressed. One thing..... Zayed Khan can't act. There are so many technical flaws in the movie. Anil Kapoor is suffering from Autism and still he manages to understand emotions and speak such deep dialogs like he did in the movie. I guess Subhash Ghai needs to look up the meaning of autism first.

Salman Khan is a chorus singer who is not rich... yet he owns a convertible, a sports bike and a big house.

I mean OK it is a movie..... directors are allowed some slack but not this.

The villains Anjan Srivastava and his daughter in law irritating at all times and they could have been scripted better.

In all a bad movie and I feel I wasted my money.

Dasvidaniya (2008)

A good movie... could have been better
24 November 2008
Dasvidaniya seems to be a good movie. Vinay Pathak once again proves that he is one of the best actors around. He comes up with another ace performance after Bheja fry but the problem that I felt with this movie was that when our movies show someone as a simpleton..... he is portrayed to be a complete fool. I also feel that the emotional Quotient of this film was pretty low. Instead of being treated as a comedy drama, this should have been made as a complete emotional flick. The scene with his brother was the show stealer. The script gave a feeling of Deja Vu, a simpleton, who is suppressed by everyone learns he is about to die and decides to live life and leaves everyone wet and gloomy when he dies. However all things aside, I feel although this is a good movie a better movie could have been made out of the script.

The good thing is that now we have a separate group of actors who by looks are not actor material but are way better than most of our chocolate boys, and scripts are being written especially for them. A lot of really good actors have been wasted in the past just because they were not chocolaty. Bollywood is learning fast from its big brother.

Could have been a very goof flick
18 August 2008
Via Darjeeling is a kind of movie that after watching you say that oh my God !!! This movie had such a great potential and it could have been made so so much better. It had host of brilliant performers like Kay Kay Menon, Rajat Kapoor, Sandhya Mridul, Sonali Kulkarni and Vinay Pathak. You cant say more highly of this guy. With each movie he is improving and when you think that this has to be his best performance he comes up with another good one. Sonali Kulkarni proves that what a good actress she is. She portrays the same role from different points of view and her performance is very good every time. Simone Singh I think should be used more in movies. She is such a fine actress. This movie could have been a very good movie had it had a good climax. You cant leave a movie or a novel in the middle and leave it to viewers and readers respectively to interpret the finale. If only it had a good and complete ending I would have rated it a 7 instead of a 5. But still a good one time watch and I am warning the viewers that when they wont find an ending they are going to be disappointed. So if you can cope with it go and see it.

A great movie
16 July 2008
Indian film Industry is very strange. On one hand it churns out movies like 'Ram Gopal Varma ki Aag' and 'Tashan' and one hand it comes out with great movies like 'The Blue Umbrella'. A very very good movie. Pankaj Kapoor proves once again that he is one of the best actors that the film industry has ever produced. Having a good story is one thing and that was what Ruskin Bond provided. But adapting a good movie and making an even better movie is what Vishal Bhardwaj did. In the past few years the industry has given us some very good child artists. And Shreya Sharma is one of them. She ranks right up along with other child actors that came to the industry in recent times. Set up in the scenic Himachal Pradesh Vishal Bhardwaj gave us a classic. A must watch for an ardent fan of Indian movies. The language used in the movie, the scenic locations, the acting of the main characters.... there is nothing about the film that is not good. There is only one thing that I did not quite liked about the movies... and that were the songs. A movie like this should not have songs.. that was my thought. But anyway a great movie and everyone should see it.

Satyajit Ray is a true legend
16 July 2008
This was my first Satyajit Ray movie. And I have to tell you that he truly deserved the lifetime Oscar that he got. The movie is a true classic. And Sanjeev Kumar proves again that what a class actor he is. Sayeed Jaffery and Amjad khan were also very good. The camera angles used in the movie were simply terrific. Especially that scene in which Sayeed Jaffery changes the pawns. This movie however I might say that is not for a regular movie viewer. As the story is slow and you get to know what a real art movie is. I hope Satyajit Ray would have made some more Hindi films for the Hindi viewers. I really loved it and would recommend it to anyone who loves art movies. A true gem of a movie.

I think Indian filmmakers should go to dictionary and lookup the meaning of action
23 June 2008
The storyline was okay. Akshay Kumar was good as always and that was the only good thing about the movie. Kareena Kapoor looked bad. There was so hue and cry over her size zero but she did not looked good leaner. I don't know why the hell did Anil Kapoor accepted such a bad role. There was nothing much to do for him in the movie. Just because it is a Yashraj film does not means that an actor should accept the role however bad it is. Said Ali khan was alright. I think that it is high time that Indian directors and producers start thinking of Indian customers as intelligent lot. What are we ? fools!!!! What do they think, they will show 2 men taking on a SWAT squad to teeters and we will believe them. Is the Indian police so stupid that they are trying to nab some criminals.... they take an entire squad of 100 + policemen and no one was there to surround the palace. The action was crap and I have never seen such bad action. Akshay Kumar was between a circle of 30-40 policemen all shooting at him..... and he shooting back at them. None of the policemen's bullet touched him but he killed all the policemen. Crap. CRAP.

I think the fight director who thought of this scene should take retirement.

I strongly recommend NOT TO SEE THIS MOVIE.

my comment
24 March 2008
A nice movie by the promising duo. Another thriller that binds you till the end and where you don't know what is going to happen next. Acting performances of Anil Kapoor, Saif and Akshaye are all good, especially Anil Kapoor. He comes up with another good comic type role after Welcome. To see Johny Lever after such a long time was heartening. His 2 minute performance reminded of vintage Johny. And this film had something in it for the female leads as well. But I think that what the Indian directors need to learn is that the films can work even if you don't put songs in them. See Sarkar and Black. Alright this movie was not as intense as those two, but putting three songs while an investigation is going on in a thriller is a waste. That is why I rated this movie as 7 instead of 8. Overall a nice time pass movie which could be watched once.

Hello
8 February 2008
I would like to say that the movie is cute ... the chipmunks are lovable and adorable but I would not spend like 10 bucks to go and watch it on theater. The story is too unrealistic man. The kids will like it though because of the talking chipmunks. The one thing that I liked although is the editing part. The movie is perfect length. But seriously man it is something you cant digest. I mean movies are unrealistic but this one did not gave you a feeling that it could happen. I know there have been movies that have been like this one in the past but still its hard to digest. The end is specially good. Uncle Ian trying normal chipmunks to sing.

Bheja Fry (2007)

A great movie
22 May 2007
Bheja Fry is an out and out comedy movie that is very different from the vulgar comedy movies made today. It is clean humor. A must watch for every cine lover, and especially the ones who love comedy. Vinay Pathak has come of age and he should bang the best actor in a comic role award for this movie. The best comedy movie I have seen in a long long time. The good thing about this movie is that it does not create any kind of confusion, a trait on which our generation comedy movies thrive. The length of the movie is also perfect. It has not been dragged at any point. Not having any songs is also a good thing as no song would have fit into the movie. Sarika looks good but she does not have too much of a role in the movie. A complete mature movie viewer film.
