Pokemon konsheruju (2023)
Awesome Animation
Beautiful stop motion animation. This has a special warmth about it that I, personally, don't find in the original cartoon. I always connected with the cards but struggled a bit with the animated series.
I loved the breadth of pokemon we see in a few short episodes. The sounds and dialogue are less grating than typical anime genre shows. The stories could mature a bit. But overall they created a world that was creative, comforting and a feast for the eyes.
. I love this visual addition to the Pokeverse. I'd love to get to know the characters even more. I hope for more episodes with expanded storylines soon!
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Hit and Miss
Chadwick Bosman's loss is felt in this sequel. Beautiful worlds they've created in Wakanda and Namor's kingdom. Each civilization has a rich history. The production and costume design teams went above and beyond. Movie was a bit slow moving, belaboring certain interpersonal moments to the point of exhaustion, many emotional moments came across as cheesy or became hard to be believable. I like that it didn't overly rely on big action sequences. It was appropriate to focus on grief. Certain character's changes/arc's didn't seem to carry over into this film. It was like they were back to their old ways despite what they'd overcome previously.
Pinocchio (2022)
Why?
Why was this necessary?
Why did Monstro need tentacles?
Why (besides service ti the directors ego) does Jessica Rabbit belong in wooden version in a dress style that hadn't even been invented yet?
Why is there a talking seagull?
This film fails to expound on the beautiful world created from the 1940 classic. It makes some decent nods to the w charm, but overall I was distracted by the CGI of Pinocchio, Tom Hank's lackluster performance... bad dialogue. I didn't feel the weight of loss or the severity of consequences from Pinocchio's actions. I don't feel it captured the sinister nature of Stromboli, or the Pleasure island.
I wish I knew what the recipe for success was for "live action" remakes... but my gut says- just stop.
