Hemisphere (2023)
A taut space thriller with a great cast!
An amazing, off-the-beaten path film, the kind of outlier that gets made through sheer determination and comes out shining. You quickly forget the low-budget conceits and become engrossed in the characters, beautifully played by two actresses I had not seen before (Paige Rion and Julie Kashmanian) but who are compelling and engaging. They bring to life a tense story that careens from paranoia to corruption to an ultimate reveal that is pretty shocking, and will have you thinking afterwards. If you are curious to know what indie films can do differently than gargantuan studio films, here you go. Thumbs up !
Luck (2022)
The Right Kind of Delight
The film is about something, to be sure. Luck happens, and what we make of it determines what kind of life we have. A great message...
But "Luck" is also simply fun, and touching. It FEELS something. Poor Sam, the young woman at the heart of it all, tries SO hard to keep what happened to her from happening to a different young girl, Hazel, and it's that tap dancing through all the machinations of the magical world of Luck she finds herself in that makes the story fun. Sure, there are a lot of rules, and a lot of "you gotta go here to do that" but with Bob the Cat, Gerry the Leprechaun, and all the Bunnies!... it keeps being delightful.
And then Jane Fonda (or rather her voice) shows up as the Dragon in charge of it all. There's so much to like.
This is what you go to (or stream) a great kids' animated film to see.
Don't be a Grinch (to mix references), just sit back and enjoy...!
