interesting film about a modern phenomenon
7 March 2008
I watched this movie at the Festival in Montréal. I enjoyed it a lot. Some people really hated it. It's great to see a movie like this coming from Europe. The soundtrack was excellent and the acting by Greg Timmermans was superb. The Movie asks many important questions about our time and what it means to be caught in two "realities".

The director knows how to pull off an intense portrayal of a life between reality and fantasy. The visual effects were a bit unconvincing at times but I accepted that because the storyline kept me interested.

The movie won the big prize in Montréal, so I'll look out for this director in the future.

great movie about humanity and nature
7 March 2008
I saw this movie when I was on holiday in the US. First I didn't know what to expect. I'd really enjoyed Sean Penn's previous movie "The Pledge", so I went in with high expectations. My expectations were met immediately and all the way through. The striking beauty of this movie is already worth watching it.

Sean Penn really loves his main character and the film very much focuses on him (of course), which can become a little too much at times. But the ending is fantastically directed. The film appeals to everybody who wants to break out. Many people dream of it - very few do it. It's good to see a movie about an idealist character who you believe.

All in all 9 out of 10!

great study of troubled characters
7 March 2008
This movie is going right back to the Coen tradition of such movies are Fargo or Blood Simple. The characters are very well constructed. The actors get the emotions across with some great minimalist acting. The extreme violence is being mirrored by subtle comedy. The soundtrack is sparse but very effective and effective.

The ending of the movie is a bit disappointing as it just cuts off. We really want to see more of these characters and where they are heading. Some great camera work by Roger Deakins and a very good production design make this movie enjoyable. Nevertheless, the movie is a great study of a group of troubled characters.

The Coen brothers are back - 8/10

A thought-provoking account of the near future
4 March 2008
I really enjoyed this movie which I saw at the film festival in Montréal. The narrative takes place in Germany but the overall scenario could be applied to any industrial nation. Thematically the movie deals with key issues such as the effects of an aging society and genetic manipulation.

The director manages to combine profound subject matters with a plot about love and identity. Stylistically the film is coherent with some beautiful camera work and a cool sound design. The ending is disheartening (no happy end) and thought-provoking.

This movie was a real treat in this year's festival program. I'll look out for more German sci-fi flicks.
