The Killer (2023)
Style over substance
Someone wrote that, style over substance. It is a bleak, well produced, a bit fun with the The Smiths soundtrack, and Fassbender is okey (Swinton is great) but what is it about? Being without a purpose? The flat circle of time (True Detective), consumerism?
Well. It is not a great story. No real depth. It all revolves around a hit man and it doesn't say much about life or society.
I always loved both Fassbender and David Fincher and I guess in a way you get some typical Fincher here, but the social commentary that you find in Fight Club is less here.
And to compare it with Seven, it is smaller, not that dynamic duo (Pitt and Freeman).
Kungen (2023)
Big cinema
Aims High and delivers. The interviewer/producer Karin Af Klintberg is one of Swedens best documentary makers.
She puts faith in the pictures, here it isong sequences with great photography and cinematic music, a lot of classical music and opera. A bit pretentious and I love it.
Not a journalistic piece but has some cinematic ambitions.
The story about the king is somewhat untold. He had a struggle in his life with his dad passing away early and he has to take on the role as the king. The king is surprisingly open and delivers a good performance.
This is much better than I would ever hoped for, even though I really like Karin Af Klingberg's style. As for the negative reviews, we'll this is not a portrait to please royalists. This is something more, a deeply human picture. All thumbs up.
John Wick (2014)
Well ... not That Good
I think Keanu Reeves is a cool and funny Guy. But the acting is horriawful. Same facial expression the whole movie, same energy. From mr Reeves.
Really slow pace editing, seem like the editors didn't have too much material to work on. Bourne-movies has a LOT cooler fighting scenes.
The plot? You killes my dog. Now i Will Hunt u 2 the end of the world. Haha ...
14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible (2021)
Fun but a bit shallow
The director actually makes the mountain master Nims seem a bit humble at times. There is a touching sub plot about his relationship with his mother.
Other then that it is full on mountain action. Stunning views, great sound and nice pacing. Some footage is superb, like the helicopter rescue or the cue at Mount Everest.
What is Nims mission? To make Nepalese sherpas famous? Well, that is kind of cool. But he is bit diffuse on the matter. There is a lot of big words, but maybe he is just a fun loving guy with great hunger for adventure and scaling sick ass mountains.
The interview with legend R Messner is not necessary. He is there to tell us that Nims feat is good. But do we need that affirmation? I thought it was all about recognizing the Nepalese's.
True Detective: Haunted Houses (2014)
Wow!
Yeah, there is a lot of great episodes. But this one is the winner of the first six. A lot of drama, emotions. Every time I see Marty I get mad. He is weak (especially compared to Rust) and Woody is acting great. Love it!
Lions for Lambs (2007)
Depressing pretentious garbage
Sorry. A lot of good actors, some good script with interesting points. But when the end credits rolled I was really surprised. Is it over? Strange plot.I didn't like the photo either. Overexposed and boring, very conventional. Lot of talk. Talk, talk, talk.
Shot Caller (2017)
This is it?
Whatta hell is this? Brutal and authentic thriller. But what happens in the end? I always thought there was a plot twist ahead, but now when the credits roll I feel cheated. Is this all? Was there no meaning to it?
I, Sniper (2020)
In depth about unlikely killer duo
Very well produced and narrated True crime. About the DC Snipers John Mohammad and Lee Malvo.
A great interview with serial killer Malvo is the back bone of the movie. A lot of interviews with Wounded victims and relatives to killed People.
Good editing and quality photo material.
The Last House on the Left (1972)
Bad directing but great script and score
Has it pros and cons. I like the script, some funny dialogue and ideas. The underlying peace n love-gone wrong-theme is great. Hess music is good, (but makes the movie even more disturbing).
The directing and the acting is horriawful. And it looks kind of bad too, harsh lightning and bad camera work.
Wes Craven before he became great at horror.
Toni Erdmann (2016)
A gem
So many bad reviews, my god! In this forum that is, the critics seem to love it. I think this is one of those slow and subtle superpretenious movies that without a problem "makes it". It is slow, but the wit and humor is unique. Very happy to have seen this. In Sweden there is a film maker called Ruben Östlund who make movies like this: The Square.
The birthday scene is gold. So is another handful Of scenes. Genius.
En man som heter Ove (2015)
Overrated
Melodramatic score. No depth. A bit slow paced, takes 45 min before stuff happens. Rolf Lassgård is ok, but the character is without any surprises.
True Detective: If You Have Ghosts (2019)
This script ... bleak
Stop Comparing with session 1. People say. Fair enough, but is not good Any way u look at it.
Poor script. Not much of a plot, even worse with the theme and character development. Boring.
Grimsby (2016)
Pleasant surprise
Never heard of it before. But i love it. Crazy, vital, fun, dirty as hell, high tempo, baron cohen and mark strong is a great duo.
Tills Frank skiljer oss åt (2019)
Weird but funny
I always loved Peter Magnussons comedies (Sommaren Med Göran, En gang I Phuket). Weird and funny but always with some gripping material and adorable characters.
This one is more on the weird side. Made me very embarrassed with all the lying from the main character. Still very funny at times.
Nice photo, good acting.
Joker (2019)
Not Much of a plot
Visual feast. Colorful. But there isn't much of a plot, which kind of ruins the underlying suspence. What Will happen? We all ready know.
Well there are a few plot twists, which makes me in a good mood. But still, the story is not gripping.
Phoenix in the lead is good. But sometimes it feels to much Taxi Driver. Watching the world on telly, staying Inside your apartment in an lonely New York (Gotham).
I like the score. The intensity is great. A few scenes is great (The Jokers tv-show appearence is intriguing, to say the least).
A bit Slow and Dull. Not a movie you watch twice.
The Art of War (2000)
this is so bad!
excessive violence filmed like it were documentary stuff important to watchers of the world, stupid plot, stereotypes etc.
spoiler below. this is bad. Snipes as a (not human? he flies from building to building like spiderman) UN agent. the end is very complex and kind of funny to watch. it is a mix between Matrix and bad horrormovie (like Valentine). Just before the Matrix-fight (which made me laugh for 5 minutes) the scared chinese girl walks around in the NY UN-building like it was a horrorflick. dark, no exits, one psycho with a gun (instead of a meathook - after all there is a thriller dimension in this movie... ;) and shes walking slowly down the hall... Just because it is located in a UN building it is not a political movie...
Besides that? Clichés and violence. Like one of those old Steven Seagal-movies (not Nico - thats a ok movie). I hope this movie didn't make budget so the director (who also did the terrible Joan d arc) will never do a movie again.
100 Girls (2000)
easy going but smart
nice 92 minutes of reflections concerning boys and girls. Matt tries to find the "love of his life" and has to spend a lot of time around women of all kind (on campus). this makes him reflect upon life, especially love life and gender. A lot of things are said so you cant find one clear message with the movie, some are smart feminist thoughts, many are just every day boy thinking. Im sure there are feminist who hated the movie and some who loved it. One not too political but great scene is where Matt has aye contact with a hot girl and tries not to look at her breast, it's a fun spoof of The good, the bad... It's a kind (or humanist as Matt calls it in the end) movie without being coward or to conventional. 6/10
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
That's it?
Big hype for almost nothing. Sure, there´s moments of interesting film (when they burn their huts - invasion of Vietnam, good music too) but in the end this is overrated crap. There´s no fun watching animals getting killed, halfbaked (poorly made) rapes of women and gut-eating. Why do they portrait cannibals as idiots eating raw meat all day? The white american is portraited correctly as a ethnocentric imperialist without limits but besides that this movie isn't much. I believe everyone with interest in film should see a Cannibal-flick ones before death (CH is as bad/good as any one else), it's crap but it is fascinating crap. Like the history of man.
