Ssa-i-bo-geu-ji-man-gwen-chan-a (2006)
Honestly, a bad movie from a bad director
I've seen Lady V, Old Boy, Three Extremes and now this.
I think i've made my decision, this director isn't actually any good.
The movies all look good, but don't have good stories really, these movies are weak in every aspect and all the way through watching all these movies i can't shrug the feeling that these movies are only here to make a bit of money and then run.
If you like this type of Asian film (Park Chan-Wook, Pang Brothers) this may be up your street, but for me it had no soul. (or anything else)
Sorry
Bullet Ballet (1998)
Super
This movie is rather underrated i feel.
This is the third movie i've seen by the director, the first being Snake of June and the second being Tetsuo: The Iron Man.
I'd say this film is better than those two films, although i very much like those two films i feel this one blows them out of the water in a lot of respects.
It's a much darker vision than Tetsuo, it's really full of dread this film. So that may put some off but it's a really interesting film and is amazingly directed and for the most part i feel it's really well acted.
For me this movie is like the two other Shinya Tsukamoto films i've seen mixed with Ichi The Killer sort of things. There are a lot of things in here that it seems Miike Takashi knowingly used in Ichi The Killer, of which Shinya Tsukamoto stars.
Yeah, a confusing and disjointed film and a film of two or maybe even three parts but a really interesting watch and the context and the interaction of the characters is excellent.
I'd say this film is very worth seeing indeed.
Tetsuo (1989)
i don't know what to say and i'm saying it
gosh, erm, where to start? this is the second movie i've seen by Tsukamoto (the first being A Snake of June) although i've been wanting to see this and many other films by the director for a long long time.
Tetsuo confused me a lot, i wasn't always 1005 sure of what was going on and the distorted camera angels and crazy re-arrangement of the plot made this even more difficult but i did enjoy this film very much and can see where it's influences were from and how it has since influenced (the ending of this film being very similar to that of D.O.A: Final by Miike Takashi for instance.
I will definitely watch this movie again, i've come away from it remembering the atmosphere much more than the story and i feel this is a primal aspect of this film, it's very much a mood piece that engulfs everything.
So what's the atmosphere like? Stark, hard, cold, twisted, confusing, baffling, sexual, guilt, voyeuristic, suspense, boundary breaking, time-less, low budget, scary, over the top, dream-like, nightmare-ish...
i could go on... but yeah, it's the sort of film that, i at least, felt more than understood.
Ett hål i mitt hjärta (2004)
Achingly Human
In many ways i can understand why people would take a disliking to this film, it is very difficult... but it's also one of the most human films i've seen for a long long time.
It's a film for people who don't want to go to see a film to 'enjoy it' it's a film that is what it is, it's not a sing and dance, it's not an entertainment piece.
I found this film very interesting indeed and found all the characters to have a lot of depth to them. This film is much closer to Lilja 4-ever rather than Together, so that may sway you to one way or the other. What makes this harder than Lilja 4-ever is that it isn't addressing issues in a very forward manner, it isn't always clear what this film is 'trying to say'.
But yeah, if you give it the chance and don't come to this film for a laugh or to enjoy yourself and are actually interested in film in it's purest form, then this should prove of worth and an interesting purchase.
Kishiwada shônen gurentai: Chikemuri junjô-hen (1997)
Miike's Childhood
I have just received both Young Thugs Innocent Blood and Young Thugs Nostalgia, i have just watched Innocent Blood and have yet to see Nostalgia so that film may blow this one out of the water! hahaha! But yeah, a brilliant film, it's full of things of interest and is of the more 'nice' films that Miike does, like DOA2. It's a really warm film with some really nice subtle cinematography that breathes life into the images that Miike constructs. It has a really nice golden colour through out which isn't too over the top that it gets in the way but clear enough as to explain the film on a purely colour basis, this is a film of memory and childhood, it really doesn't deserve the 18 rating it has, it's insane that it has that to be honest! The one thing i'd say is a little off putting, which is the music, it's VERY cheesy and genetic and pulls the film down in respects, but on the other hand it very much fits in with the innocence of the whole movie.
It's a movie that, although very 'easy' and innocent, it has a lot of depth and aspects of interest such as the construction of the film and how it is told, the editing, the characters, and how it relates to other films by the director. I'd really really really recommend this title to anyone who doesn't just take Miike as a place to be horrified, he's never been about exploitation and hey, this is pretty far away from that sort of thing.
Gokudô kyôfu dai-gekijô: Gozu (2003)
Gozu, a movie that is perfect to intentions
Gozu is a movie that is troublesome; it is a movie about sexuality, spirituality, change and choice.
The movie is perfect to the director's intentions and on that basis it is difficult to find fault with this title. Don't all movies only want to be accurate to intentions and visions??? There are so many movies these days that are unwilling to do so, Gozu is a movie that is confident and full of intricacy.
Miike often uses his movies as an artist would use a sketch pad, he tries out ideas and works with thoughts that run through his head, it is often the case that they all so appear this way when we watch them, they feel as though they're leading to something, although all equally important these movies can seem very disjointed and perplexing. I feel that Gozu is a 'final piece', if you will, to these sketches. It's a thorough and thought provoking movie that brings to mind theories such as Barbara Creed's 'The Monstrous Feminine'.
It's a movie that will most likely be over looked but there is so much to this movie that is of interest, the cow, the change in tones through out the movie (clear, yellow, clear), the themes, the characters, the plot, the structure, the cameras, the viewer... it's all very exciting stuff!
