Eye for an Eye (1996)
Kiefer Sutherland is chilling as the villain! Sally Field kicks his ass!
The critics maligned this crime thriller in 1996 but it has gained cult status over the years. Sally Field is such an amazing actress. The opening scene on the phone is so brutal . You feel every emotional beat. I can't even imagine watching that as a parent of a child. Kiefer Sutherland plays quite the monster in this . The courtroom scene when he says " Ssssory" makes my skin crawl. My only criticism is Ed Harris...his performance is atrocious but I blame the director for that. It's a solid crime thriller with a terrific climax! I think the reason I sought it out is that Sally Field is up there with Meryl Streep, Katherine Hepburn and Cate Blanchett as the best American actresses of all time!
Jackie Brown (1997)
My favorite Tarantino film!
It was the first film after Pulp Fiction. Everyone was disappointed even myself. I was 18 and in college saw Jackie Brown in the theater. I was pissed and disappointed because it wasn't Pulp Fiction. Over time I have become appreciative that this is a film that may not have been showered with Academy Awards but it should have been . Especially Samuel L. Jackson and Pam Grier and Michael Keaton. It deserves yje praise it did not receive because the lexicon was expecting a follow up to a film that was lighting in a bottle. Respect Elmore Leonard and respect Quentin Tarantino's undisputed masterpiece!
The Squid and the Whale (2005)
The first-time art reflected my own parents divorce. Divorce is messy and hurtful. In the end the kids take the brunt.
My parents divorced when I was 3, separated at 2. My whole childhood was this displacement and then it manifested in my adult relationships. This film helped me heal and reach a catharsis about my parents. I realize as a middle-aged adult they were flawed. Forgiveness is the only way through. I wish one day I could meet Noah Baumbach and give him a big hug. I would say thank you. Your experience helped me heal in ways I thought were impossible. If you are a child of divorce this will make you laugh until you cry . 😢Jeff Daniel's has so much of my Dad's Narcissism and fragile male ego it was uncanny how accurate his performance was.
George & Tammy (2022)
Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain give wonderful performances!
The story of George Jones and Tammy Wynette is very complicated. This show doesn't take sides but shows both people who are self destructive and truly talented artists. Country music is very much an acquired taste. I love it...the old stuff. The songs are only as good as the pain and their marriage suffered Jones and his drinking and abusive behavior. Tammy Wynette is such an inspiration for women. She broke the glass ceiling in Country music for women. Reminds me of Walk the Line
Both actors do their own singing. Lovely. Wish Michael Shannon had received a Golden Globe nomination with Jessica Chastain..she is lovely and heartbreaking 💔
