Interesting Trivia
Bits and pieces about the characters in the movie: Franklin was the only man to sign the four most important documents is our history of this period-the Declaration, the Treaty of Alliance with France, the Peace Treaty with England, and the Constitution. James Wilson was later named by Washington as the first member of the new Supreme Court.
Robert Livingston was on the committee to write the Declaration but did not sign it. He and his cousin Philip Livingston were both delegates to the Congress and the state assembly. When one was in Philadelphia, the other was in Albany. When the document was actually signed in August, it was Philip's turn in Congress.
John Dickinson did not vote for Independance or sign the Declaration, but he did lead a brigade of militia in Washington's Army. Richard Henry Lee's brother Francis Lightfoot also signed the Declaration. When the Constitution was adopted, he was Virginia's first Senator. Two of his younger brothers were ambassadors.
Charles Thompson was also secretary of the Constitutional Convention. He wrote the final draft of both documents. He was a school teacher chosen for the post because he was though to have the best penmanship in the state.
The Thousand Plane Raid (1969)
Decent entetainment
I thought this movie was pretty good. They had a good cast, but the writing could have been better. I thought most of the characters were pretty one dimensional, almost wooden in the way they behaved. Rather a waste of all that talent. The action sequences were good. Makes me wonder if some of the footage was from Army Air Force archives. It is fun to watch those big, old bombers fly. Many of the facts seem to be correct. Bomber losses did start a sharp rise before they changed tactics. All in all. Not a bad way to relax for an hour or so and watch the war go by. As WWII films go, this is about middle of the road.
Zulu (1964)
Good movie but unrealistic
I enjoyed the movie, but it bore little resemblance.to the real battle. Chard had several years seniority in Bromhead. Bromhead was hard of hearing. Bourne was short and 24 years old. Hook was the hospital cook, finished his career as a sergeant. Witt was not a drunken coward, apparently, he wasn't even there, he left earlier. Still a good movie, but wanders pretty far from history, as many such movies do. Total dead was only 17, so the battle was not as close as it seems in the movie. Chard was an engineer, so defense of positions was part of his training and experience, that's why he was left in charge.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Plenty of Action
This movie is basically a mix of Aliens and Starship Troopers. The ideas are hokey and the plot a little thin, but it makes for a relaxing couple of hours. I was watching it while doing something else as well, but ended up with just the movie.
