Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015)
Witty humor, clever sight gags, inventive death and dismemberment scenes
Title: Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse Media
Type: Film
Zombie Type: Some slow, some fast, some surprises Outbreak/Apocalypse
Phase: Initial outbreak (characters experience the outbreak as it happens)
Sub-Genre: Horror/Comedy
Having never heard of this, I went into the film expecting little more than the typical D-level trash found on most streaming sites. You know what I mean; the hundreds of zombie movies that appear to have been filmed by bored high school kids during summer vacation. The experience was thankfully more akin to Zombieland.
Combining witty (frequently over-the-top) humor, clever sight gags, inventive zombie death and dismemberment scenes and the best use of a trampoline ever, Scout's Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse is not only similar in tone to the 2009 horror comedy hit (Zombieland) but is easily the best and most fun zombie romp since Woody Harrelson's epic quest for Twinkies. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot, but don't spoil anything with the trailer. I haven't seen the trailer, but I hear it gives away least two memorable scenes.
Final Verdict: Highly recommended!
Warm Bodies (2013)
Warm Bodies Warms Your Hearts
Zombie Type: Both slow-walking and fast-running undead
Outbreak/Apocalypse Phase: Post-outbreak apocalypse (outbreak has already occurred, characters are living through the zombie apocalypse)
Sub-Genre: Romantic Comedy (rom-zom-com)
This is the kind of movie that really freshens up an entire genre. I wish I could talk more about the story, but I try to either leave these posts fairly spoiler-free or at least warn readers when I'm about to spill some of the beans (brains?).
Warm Bodies is based on the Isaac Marion novel of the same name and centers around the relationship between R (a male zombie) and Julie (a female living human). Seeing as how I've already classified this as a romantic comedy, I think you can tell roughly where the story goes. I enjoyed the relationship between the odd pairing, and the awkwardness that ensues when a girl catches a zombie's fancy unsurprisingly leads to some funny moments.
What truly makes the story unique by zombie standards is MILD SPOILERS it is basically a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. R is Romeo, J is Juliet, M is Mercutio, Perry is Paris, Julie's dad hates all of zombie- kind, etc. There are several scenes that reference Shakespeare's classic, but I'll leave that for you guys to discover yourselves. END SPOILERS
This movie was a huge pleasant surprise. I expected it to be cheesy but decent enough to watch. Instead, I found myself regarding this as probably one of my top ten favorite zombie films of all time. The uniqueness of the story is only half of what makes it good; the other half is simply the fact that this is a solid, enjoyable movie.
Isaac Marion announced in 2012 that he is writing a sequel to the novel Warm Bodies. Whether it is also adapted to the cinema screen remains to be seen, but I eagerly await the chance to watch the further evolution of his story.
Final Verdict: highly recommended not only for zombie fans, but also for anyone else looking for a good movie that's different than the usual undead fare. Very unique zombie film!
Dead Before Dawn 3D (2012)
Goofy, cheesy, funny, great to watch with a group of friends.
Zombie Type: "Zemons" (demon zombies); basically fast-walking (they don't really sprint) undead Outbreak/Apocalypse Phase: Initial outbreak (characters experience the outbreak as it happens) Sub-genre: Goofy Horror, Dark Comedy
Dead Before Dawn had an awesomely cheesy late 80's/early 90's vibe right from the start that carried the fun all the way to the very end. I'm a sucker for 80's cheese (hell yeah gimme some cheddar), so throw in some zombies and it's like crack for me. I had a good time watching this movie.
The first 20 or so minutes were a bit slow, but it's all fun once the stuff hits the fan. The basic premise involves a group of college kids fighting off the zemon menace. Main character Casper Galloway (played by "Diary of a Wimpy Kid's" Devon Bostick) is the grandson of Horus Galloway (great Scott, he's played by Christopher Lloyd!), the owner of a store called "Occult Barn." When Casper agrees to watch the store while the elder Galloway steps out to grab something, his friends accidentally unleash a curse that turns its victims into "zemons" and spreads itself from person-to-person either via eye-contact with Casper and his friends after 10pm or hickeys from the already infected. But wait! The zemons can be turned into your personal slaves if you seduce them with a French kiss! Needless to say, this movie's charm comes from the fact that it doesn't take itself the least bit seriously.
That's all you need to know. Dead Before Dawn is a bit over-the-top (not insanely crazy, more slapstick and funny than anything), surprisingly funny, cheesy, and fun to watch. I'm lucky to have found so many enjoyable zombie movies over the past month after years of sifting through random crap on Netflix.
Final Verdict: Recommended. Goofy, cheesy, funny, great to watch with a group of friends. If what I just typed doesn't immediately turn you off, go watch Dead Before Dawn!
Cockneys vs Zombies (2012)
Great zombie movie, lots of fun!
Zombie Type: Slow-walking undead
Outbreak/Apocalypse Phase: Initial outbreak (characters experience the outbreak as it happens)
Sub-genre: Comedy (zom-com)
I've been on a zombie kick lately. The latest piece of entertainment comes in the form of British zom-com film "Cockneys vs Zombies." Unlike last week's very unique rom-zom-com "Warm Bodies," this is a more traditional zombie flick. It pits a group of mobile young adults and not-so-mobile elderly against the classic slow-walking undead. The makeup, gore and special effects aren't ground-breaking, but they're absolutely solid and pretty damn good on occasion. The comedy isn't laugh out loud hilarious, but there are some very funny moments that bring an overall light feel to the movie that makes it a very enjoyable viewing experience. The cockney accents and British feel implied by the title were indeed present and only add to the fun factor. Awesome zombie film and another solid addition to my list of favorite zombie movies.
Final Verdict: Highly recommended!
