The Houses October Built (2014)
good horror flick but not perfect
I am a huge haunt fan and I am glad to see a movie that did its research when it came to the haunted attractions. I thought the characters were a lot more likable than the Blair witch project but like the Blair witch project, the characters were so incredibly stupid, they wouldn't flinch if a gun was pointed at there face. This movie did give a great Halloween atmosphere that I loved but I just wished there was at least one good kill (I know it turns out to be a really extreme haunt in the sequel but if I was buried alive in a haunted house I would not go on another haunt tour). I did like the documentary parts and I thought it was the strongest part of the film.
The Devil's Candy (2015)
One of the best horror films I've seen
This film rocked my socks off. I am a metal head and it is great to see a super metal film that isn't played for laughs. The acting was amazing and it made me feel for these characters. The editing and cinematography was great and the drone metal score rattled by bones. The ending got a little unrealistic but it worked to convey this metal climax that the movie was building up too. Some scenes I found incredibly disturbing (especially every scene involving the motel room and the kidnapper). This film feels like if you put "the shining (1980)" and "Mandy (2018)" in a blender. If you feel like watching a disturbing metal horror move this should be your pick.
Kids vs. Aliens (2022)
Crazy B-movie party all the way through!
I loved this movie, I thought it was so much fun! I watched this an hour ago in a theater, so it is still fresh in my mind. The highs of this movie are the charming DIY gore and creature effects, the great cast of kid actors, the lighting/camerawork, the soundtrack and the color correction. The lows of this film are very minor and only consist of a style over substance and plot ( the style is the substance) and the fact the movie has a large Halloween vibe even though it showed at my theater during late January. The movie has a very fast pace that made it feel like a thirty minute short film to me. I love indie films like this and I suggest you give it a watch.
Bloody Muscle Body Builder in Hell (1995)
deserves more cult film status
Bloody Muscle Bodybuilder In Hell definitely deserves more attention. It feels like a bunch of collage students watched the first two Evil Dead films and collectively thought "we could do that' and they did. The film starts with a wife trying to kill her husband. The husband gets the upper hand and kills her only for her to return from the grave. The film cuts to thirty years later were a body builder, some sort of physic priest and a news reporter are visiting the old house were the events took place thirty ears earlier. From 12:48 to 23:17 some of the shots of empty hallways, rooms and staircases are generally unnerving before every thing kicks into a fun and cheesy gore fest. The blood, guts and gore of the film looks like its made of play dough and red jello but it still has lots of low budget charm. The low quality camera only adds to the fun and adds a grindhouse type quality to it. There is a lot of fun stop motion in this film that reminded me of Basket Case. In conclusion Bloody Muscle Body Builder In Hell should be more recognized for its low budget charm.
