Der Bruch (1989)
why the bad dubbing?
The German actors' German dialogue is very badly dubbed. Toward the end of the flick they hardly seem to be trying to fit the words to the on-scrren lips. Why?
It's an entertaining & funny flick, with 2 or 3 very good actors, especially Hoppe. But if 1946 Berlin is so poor & bombed-out and near starvation, why are all the main characters well-dressed and well-groomed?
The only place I could see this was on Kanopy. It's good enough to have had wider distribution in the US.
The actress who plays Tina is reserved but that's very funny as she tries to avoid committing to either one of the naive boys.

Disappointing
Disappointing, compared to French TV's Spiral and The Bureau. This show re-uses every thumping cliche about child sexual abuse. It's a lazy premise. In addition, it is sad to see the actress Mule made to look silly. In The Bureau (what a terrific show) she was a smart, empathetic and dignified police officer. In this show she wears some kind of ridiculous head-dress or hairstyle, like a low-rent Aida. I can't look without laughing at her. The head-dress spoils any scene she's in.
On the show's positive side, the atmospherics of rain, wind and trees are good. Nice portrait of western France. Sharp, well-thought-out photography. The acting is all right.

Cate Blanchett unconvincing
How sad. In this film Cate Blanchett can not deliver a line convincingly. Everything is mannered. She seems uncomfortable with the upper reaches of classical music, fundraising, master classes etc. How sad that the actress who was brilliant in "Carol," who almost rescued "Blue Jasmine," and who was good in "Aviator" does not fit this role; a role and script which are unconvincing to start with. Full disclosure: I couldn't watch the whole flick, and walked out.
BTW the five full minutes of tiny, unreadable black-and-white credits at the start were a bad augury. What was this director trying to inflict on us?
