Captain Fantastic (2016)
Post-Covid this hits different...
I am pretty amazed that I have never seen or heard of this movie. And even more astonished by the number of reviews calling it "unrealistic" or about "hippie crazies." What do you all have to say now? Now that we are living in a world where government can shut you down, take your livelihood from you, take your children away from you and jail you for just being in a certain area at a certain time. In America! This movie is more relevant than ever and I hope there are people out there that realize that not everyone desires to live in an 800 sq ft apartment in Manhattan, stick your kids on IPads and DoorDash every meal. There is beauty in the simplicity of life...and I think this movie does a great job of sharing that.
Love at First Sight (2023)
100% chance of falling in love with the lead actors
I expected this to be a fluffy, silly rom-com and was completely blown away. Haley and Ben's performance was incredible. Their skills really carried the movie. Their chemistry is undeniable and honestly I was in tears by the end. The music choices and the third-person narrator were on point too, keeping the story moving along and the viewer engaged. A little predictable and I found the Dad and new wife to be a little annoying but overall not enough to dock a star...this is the best Netflix flick I've seen this year. Please make more movies with both of these young actors- they deserve more roles where they can shine!
Harlan Coben's Shelter (2023)
Perfect balance of mystery thriller and cheesy high school drama
Really enjoying this so far-it is hard to find shows that I can watch with my teens. I love all the characters, no matter how cliche they may seem on the surface I feel like the actors are all really great at portraying depth-and not everyone is exactly the cliche that they seem now are they? Spoon is my favorite so far...love to cheer on the nerdy underdog. The only reason I didn't give it a higher score is that I feel some of the bad language is unnecessary and would have loved for a writer/editor to have toned that down to make it a little more family friendly. But overall willing to overlook. It's definitely sucked me in and can't wait for more!
Happiness for Beginners (2023)
I needed more....
After I found out this movie was based on a novel I ordered the book immediately. The premise was great and I loved the potential story here but I felt like there were so many pieces left dangling. Many of the characters felt introduced then abandoned. Luke Grimes was a great leading man-Netflix I would watch a million movies with him in a leading role....but SO many of the other characters felt surface-level. Between Mason (what's his issue?) and Kaylee (musician? Secret genius?) to Sue's unexplored vow of silence and Beckett's unexplained daddy issues it felt like a lot was left for the audience to just assume. What was with Lulu? And whatever happened to Mike?
I really wish more attention had been paid to the characters here instead of spending so much valuable film-time on silly cliches. But, Netflix-more Luke Grimes please!
