Insomnia (2002)
Highly Overrated
First off, I loved Memento. As I'm sure the majority of people going into Insomnia did.
But, let's face it. This movie is not that great. I mean, granted there are a few cool sequences (the underwater log stuff, some "fancy" editing). But, overall the movie didn't work for me.
First off, I didn't believe in or care about the characters. And none of the people playing the parts did it for me. Pacino is playing Pacino. The parts where he gets suddenly angry are comedic. (like the part where he yells at his partner with, "why the *bleep* do you care?") Hilary Swank seems like an afterthought. And Robin William's calm approach (similar to Spacey's in Se7en) doesn't work here.
In Se7en the killer actually had a motive. And in a crazy way, it made sense. In this one, the killer kills by accident? But, wait why was he slapping around Hillary Swank at the end?
And the ending is so lame. "Let me sleep..."
When I first saw the previews to this movie, I knew it was the memento guy and that was the sole reason for interest in the movie. The previews to the movie looked lame to me, but I figured well it's not the movie, so let's go for it.
But, I was wrong.
I'm glad I had a free movie certificate on this one, because it wasn't worth paying to see.
Undercover Blues (1993)
Why this movie was ever made is beyond me
How anyone could read this script and say, "I have to make this picture" stumps me. How any actor after reading this lame duck could say, "I must act in this" stumps me.
The fact is I tried my best to get through this movie. I got about 1/3 into it and just couldn't watch anymore. The jokes were non-existent. The action lame. The acting poor.
But, the worse thing of it all is quite simply: the script.
It's formulaic, it's hackneyed, and it's just bad.
One review I found summed it up best, "Give the tape to one of your worst enemies and tell them it's the best movie ever and smile a lot."
Stay away from this thin-story lined, hack fest.
