BEST SCI FI VEHICLE DESIGN!!!
18 October 2002
Wowza!

Now this movie aint great (far from it) but it aint horrid either. Just yer basic post nuclear sci-fi apocalypse survival flick.

Survivors get from point A to point B with a bunch of trouble in between. The trouble actually doesn't add up to much (look for roaches!) and the acting and storyline are at a minimum....BUT!!!!!!

The following things kicked ass!:

Beginning!--->creepy slow suspense as the world faces nuclear destruction!

Score!--->Great music sets the tone for the scenes (saving many)

Sky FX!--->tripped out! The skies are the best looking I've seen in any apocalyptic movie...way cool!

The SUV!!--->They actually built this thing! it works and works great! No scale model here, although I'm sure its looks are best viewed on the outside, but its done well, not cheap, handles the road great, and if i could find one, I'd buy it (look carefully at wheel design....amazing!)

Dats it, Dats all. B-movie sci-fi fun. No brainer..great for 2 for 1 rental, follow it with something that will get brain workin again.

NAZGUL!!!!
4 February 2002
Ok, ok, ok

Yes the new version is out. Yes it is STUNNING! This animated classic will never measure up (and rightly so...animation vs live action are completly different mediums) BUT!!!!!some elements of Bashki's animated gem are definetly done much better (and you wonder why some of Jackson's scenes are almost identical) I will not list them all, but here are a couple to compare...

THE NAZGUL!!! will always win in the animated version. Their forever demanding desire for the ring , their HUNGER for it is depicted with utmost precision. The scene at the side of the road, with the hobbits hiding, is SO IMPRESSIVE! The Nazgul is sooo determined to get that ring..he SMELLS it, he salivates for it, like a juicy steak he wishes to devour it once again...God that scene scares me! Ditto for the scene at the Inn where the Nazgul are slicing up the bedsheets..so overpowered by the desire to get the ring they dont notice their folley. It takes the lead Nazgul to show them all (by pulling back the tattered sheet) how bady they have failed...and ohh the pain of failure...that gut wrentching scream they bellow will chill you to the bone!!!

I also like the tentacled creature at the gates of the mines, the way he slams the doors shut after them..it like he's saying.."i will not persue you, as i know that what you will find in those mines scares even me!!" And of course Borimere...The arrows at the end..Only death can stop his desire to rid the world of these evil Orcs, and a dozen arrows it takes to bring him down. (Not like the 3 in the New Version , although big ones) He is more the leader of men in this one , not like the leader of sissy's as in the Jackson version.

All in all this was once the benchmark, and has some great stuff in it...screw the quality of animation..its about the quality of IMAGINATION, and this has enough to drown in.

Rent it, watch it..then watch it again :)
