Not bad
7 July 2007
Not a bad movie. It kept my attention from beginning to end, and was pretty entertaining. Not the greatest movie, or even close. Deol's entire family is murdered at the beginning of the movie by a villainous cop. Due to this trauma Deol becomes a terrorist with the singular goal of hunting down and killing the cop who wiped out his family. Good action sequences, not bad music by Anu Malik, but very strange jerky and erratic choreography. Deol and Mukerji's dance sequences are very odd. Further, I like Deol, but his acting style may not be everyones cup of tea. The looks he gives to convey his inner torment are a bit much to take at times. But his does a good job carrying the movie, and is believable in the role.

Amazingly good

Amazingly good, in the mould of a classic western, with Sanjay Dutt, who is maybe one of the best actors period. He is up there with Pacino, Bachchan, Brando, etc.

Nandita Das stood out, playing Dutt's wife, in a very powerful performance.

I enjoyed the slow build up to the climax of the film; Puri in one of his best "bad guy" roles was also great.

.. One warning, I had to buy this DVD three times. Both previous copies by Spark, where defective and would not play past the 70-minute mark.

Highly recommended.

Classic Bollywood - Modern message
30 June 2007
I really liked this movie.

It was a return to the more classic Bollywood archetype, in this day of Dhoom , Kriish or Jhoom Barabar Jhoom .

Rani was as beautiful as ever, and as usual, her performance was powerful and commanding.

To cast Salman was particularly sly on the part of the filmmakers, as he is so full of life and energetic making his fate all the more devastatingly tragic. Rani and Salman have almost electric chemistry, their court ship is a high light of the movie, and in fact it is the first half of the movie is quite happy and dream like, which I am sure was the intentions of the filmmakers.

When tragedy strikes, the film takes a turn and I guess this is where a lot of the debate lies in terms of the movie's theme and "message" which is admittedly handled a little awkwardly especially Puri's almost instantaneous turn at the end of the movie, but over all as over film-making, it was one of the best Bollywood movies I have seen this year.

Worst date move ever?

Salman is impressive in an out of character performance, but this might be the most depressing Hindi film I've ever seen. Makes Veer-Zaara seem absolutely jovial. However, it is definitely worth viewing, the songs are excellent, great cinematography and a powerful performance by Salman Khan. 8 out of 10

On the DVD case, under the title, it states, "Unfortunately based on a true-story" but at the end of the movie the typical disclaimer appears stating, "all of the depicted events are fictitious and not based on any real person living or dead etcetera…. . . .
