Spectre (2015)
not bond enough
The James Bond formula is well known, thus the task of making a good "Bond movie" is always at stake. Luckily all the sponsorship, merchandising and product placement help with providing the resources to bring life to one of the most expensive movies ever made. But even with such an impressive budget, the film fails in its mission. Yes there are big action scenes, exotic landscapes, gadgets, bond girls and villains, but almost none manage to leave an impression. I have never thought Daniel Craig was a good cast as 007 and in this film the villain (contrary to Skyfall) didn't "vilify enough" for my personal taste. My mixed feelings towards Léa Seydoux remain, as she will not be remembered as an iconic bond girl; on the other hand Monica Bellucci's brief appearance deserved more screen time and depth (also, kudos for picking her as the only possible "mature" bond girl at 50 y/o; those young girls have much to learn). I do think Sam Mendes is a resourceful director, but this film was just not good enough. And while Thomas Newman provides a good soundtrack to go by (as is his habit), the opening theme song by Sam Smith is simply not Bond-worthy. This will for sure be another box-office success and I only hope that Eon Productions can use that money to find a new James Bond main actor, a disruptive and creative director and a new life to the whole series.
Macbeth (2015)
great costumes and cinematography, OK/good performances by the lead actors and soundtrack, lack of a better understanding of the plot
Having never watched the play by Shakespeare, I had high expectations for the film adaptation of such a famous and acclaimed piece of art. I was immediately impressed by the beautifully somber photography, the enchanted Scottish landscapes and the brutality of the fights. However a major unexpected hurdle awaited me: without subtitles, a difficult whispered diction and a strong accent in a long-gone form of English, I found myself often lost in the dialogues, which distracted me from following the course of the plot. I've managed to catch up with it further on, but this loss prevented me from fully appreciating this film. Overall: great costumes and cinematography, OK/good performances by the lead actors and soundtrack, lack of a better understanding of the plot.
The Walk (2015)
a good reason to go to the cinema, but if you can only pick one film about Philippe Petit, go for Man on Wire
The best thing in this movie doesn't belong to it: the story itself. That's half way for having a good movie. And if it is true that the technology nowadays allows us a vivid and immersive experience (thanks IMAX 3D), and that together with the good acting by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Ben Kingsley they bring this film to a 7, it still falls way too short of what such a story can bring, as it was brilliantly done at Man on Wire. Mind you, it is still a good reason to go to the cinema, but if you can only pick one film about Philippe Petit, go for Man on Wire. That one is a hell of a piece of storytelling!
