Twilight (1998)
languid
I like noir films in general but the pacing of certain scenes tends to be very slow and contrivances such as Sarandon's cigarette dialogue/fumbling exaggerates and amplifies the slowness; I suppose this pacing is intended to impart to the audience a feeling of importance/seriousness to the scene but it does just the opposite.
I was surprised to read the budget for this film was $37 million because the production values don't seem to be that high --- apparently lots of money going to actors' salaries.
Plot hole observation: Newman shoots and kills Garner in Garner's home; Newman apparently explains it away to the police as self defense because he was about to expose Garner as a murderer; the now dead Garner has no way to defend himself, and irregardless of this fact, the police swallow whole Newman's suspicious story (which, oops, happens to be the main premise of the screenplay) and let him go free. I know if I shot and killed someone in their house without clear motive I wouldn't be walking free anytime soon.
Bad Boy (2002)
somewhat entertaining
Firstly, i get bored with most movies after the first hour, when the premise has become painfully clear but the movie keeps droning on for another hour or two towards the obvious conclusion; thankfully the producers kept this one short and sweet.
The plot has some holes (and some non-believable situations) but i wasn't expecting anything different being a comedy with Denis Leary so i forgive it. I was amazed at how easily he tracked down his old girlfriends and the fact that they all remembered him --- and that most were more than ready to resume where they left off.
I appreciated the twist at the end which was unexpected and actually thought-provoking. In summary, mildly entertaining and to the point.
Miami Hustle (1996)
kathy looks good, nice outdoors scenery
this movie?? is full of plot holes ... why didn't the crooked lawyer just kill off kathy ireland's character (as he apparently intended to do anyway) at the very beginning? there is absolutely no reason to involve her in the scam .... this invalidates the entire premise of the movie and makes a joke of the script ... too bad that pammy anderson didn't sign on ... she would have brought a bit of nastiness to the lead role ... one other plot hole, any actions of the crooked lawyer associated with this episode would have been immediately disqualified by a competent court; it was absolutely unnecessary to have him sign legal documents at the end of the movie to force him to relinquish his interests in the estate
8 Million Ways to Die (1986)
good start, bad ending
the first hour of this movie is watchable; the second half continually degenerates and finally launches into a drug exchange scene that is horrifically scripted, directed and is laughably unrealistic; andy garcia tries his best to channel pacino's "scarface" performance but obviously isn't up to the task; randy brooks looks amateurish by overplaying his role as the tough, black gangster complete with stupid, stereotypical verbal assaults; jeff bridges puts in a solid performance and carries the movie --- he continues to be a poor man's kurt russell or kris kristofferson; however, his implied "conversion" of arquette from tough hooker to well behaved girlfriend is too much to take; almost forgot, what happened to all the money "scudder" found in the "po boys" bag??? hmmm, like a good cop, he probably released it into evidence ... not!! just another giant plot hole
