Rocky (1976)
8/10
Timeless classic for all tastes
5 October 2023
I had no high expectations before watching Rocky, actually we could say that I had some preconceptions about it, being a gen z girl, but man, was I wrong!

This movie kept my attention high from start to finish, and got me to keep thriving for the protagonist, impersonated by an amazing Silvester Stallone. Rocky, as I found, is not the stereotypical macho figure you might think: even though he is a boxer with the classic ''tough guy" look, he often shows his most sensitive and fragile sides, which makes him a role model in many ways. I really liked the way they developed his love story with Adriana, because this side storyline was made almost as important as the main one, creating some balance and avoiding making it an action movie.

Even though the movie came out in 1976 it is still perfectly enjoyable and the values it conveys are still relevant to our society nowadays, which to me makes it a timeless classic.

CODA (2021)
6/10
Not different from the average Disney Channel movie
1 December 2022
Frankly, I'm disappointed that CODA won the Oscar for best movie, and I don't understand why the reviews and ratings are so high.

Don't get me wrong, the goal of giving space to deaf people is noble, and it was about time that Hollywood started this process; nonetheless, this movie is nothing but sappy.

The actors did a great job and their performances were by far the most enjoyable thing of the film, but the plot was really basic, and to me it wasn't different than the Disney Channel movies I used to watch when I was a kid. The obstacles that the protagonist has to face to achieve her dream are overcome very easily, and there is really no tension: from the very beginning, you just know there will be the happy ending with the girl going to music school, so the whole plot feels sort of fake.

You can't even say that the concept is original, since it's basically a copy of a previous french movie.

On a positive note, I think the dialogue between the protagonist and her dad is really moving, I admit I might have shed a tear in that moment.

As an adult, I think I am too old for this kind of movie, but I would recommend showing it to kids or young adolescents.

Surprising and intense

I watched this movie without any particular expectations, and I was positively surprised!

This is not your usual western, the pace is really slow and I would say that it's one of those movies which are strongly based on the atmosphere more than on the plot. If this kind of movies are of your taste, I strongly recommend watching it.

The director did an amazing job in creating a tense atmosphere since the very beginning, and in keeping it up for the whole length of the screentime. The main characters are complex and well defined, and the actors were perfectly cast. I think this was my favourite performance by Benedict Cumberbatch, who once again proved to be a versatile actor.

Maybe the character that I liked less is Kirsten Stuart's, who in my opinion was a bit too one-dimensional and maybe deserved more lines or screen time, since she happened to be pretty important for the development of the plot.

I liked the twist at the ending, which I wasn't expecting since I didn't read the book the movie is based on.

Masterpiece

I love Paolo Sorrentino's directing style and watched almost all of his movies, and this is maybe my favourite: its mixture of dramatic and light hearted moments truly captures the essence of life.

You can tell that the story is really personal and heartfelt, being it inspired by the director's personal life. Filippo Scotti, at his first big role in cinema, delivers a great performance as a young Paolo Sorrentino, but all the actors were really perfect for their roles and had a great chemistry working together.

The city of Naples, which could be considered the background of this coming of age story, is actually one of the main characters if not the protagonist, as it really comes alive in the movie's beautiful photography.

The rythm of the movie is not really fast, it didn't bother me but I understand it's not for everyone.

I am really glad I could see this at the cinema, and I honestly want to say that movies like this make me proud of my country.

Horror meets poetry
25 November 2022
Before I start this review, I have to admit I have a soft spot for Luca Guadagnino and his directing style, which really speaks to me on an emotional level.

The movie is not perfect, but I enjoyed watching it, as to me this mixture of gory horror and on the road romance is quite new.

The plot is quite thin and the pace of the movie is slow and indefinite, but to me this is not negative: in the two hours of screentime I was never bored, and I sort of felt like I was on the road along with the protagonists.

The lead actors were really good, and in my opinion this was one of the best performances by Timothée Chalamet, whose chemistry with Guadagnino is undeniable. I think he was particularly suited for this role, because his innocent face and body perfectly communicated the nature of his character, conflicted between his monstrous instincts and his good heart.

The best performance was anyway delivered by Mark Rylance, whose creepy character Sully was great for keeping the tension high throughout the whole movie.

I really loved the poetic atmospheres of the road trip scenes, so typical of Guadagnino.

The negative aspects that can't be denied are the poor development of the characters, which makes it hard to root for them, and the quality of the dialogues, which are often shallow.

Personally I didn't appreciate the ending scene and the related dialogue especially.

Despite some negative specs, I would absolutely suggest seeing it, if you don't mind some pretty gory scenes.

Aesthetic nonsense
25 November 2022
I went to the cinema to see this movie after reading a few good reviews, which made me genuinely curious. I have to say that my expectations weren't met at all: the plot is really thin and not well developed, the characters are too stereotyped and the ''jumpscares'' are really not that scary or surprising.

The great actors in the cast did the best they could with what they were given, but they are not enough to save the movie: even the lead roles were so poorly developed that it's hard to care for them.

The photography was probably the best part of the movie, which was indubitably eye catching and aesthetic.

It is a mystery to me why this movie has such good reviews, my personal advice is to save the money of the ticket to go see something better.
