Kull the Conqueror (1997)
An Arrogant Dog who would be King
whoever cast Harvey Fierstein as a baddie/action figure was either bribed or blackmailed. What were they thinking of? This is a pitiful excuses for a film, it makes Red Sonja look good. A terrible script, embarrassing stunts and a cast to cringe for... and a no-money for special effects either.
I can see where the Conan rewrite comes in. And i can see why Arnie declined it. Maybe it was written by someone's 14 year old after one too many games of D&D. Beware girl magic users in ridiculously skimpy clothes, a celibate monk and our all shouting, all hamming, fighter-barbarian
FRom a political point of the view, the 'woman as a passive vessel for the breath of god' is dodgy as hell
Conquerer DeathMatch result: Conan 5 Kull 0
Bring It On (2000)
fun light yet not at all cliched this is good
it sounds like yet another teen/summer movie, sugary and a bit cliched. but Bring It On confounds your expectations. the acting is good, though some of the characters are a bit thin on detail. meanwhile the plot is down right fun. It plays with your expectations, waving the obvious plot cliche at you and then steps aside and dances off somewhere unexpected. Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku bounce off it each in a playful way, and Gabrielle Union adds just the right amount of compton stereotype without falling overboard. Jesse Bradford makes a great alternative daria-stylee romantic lead. A film that allows for gay teens to be treated as matter of fact, hint at alternative lifestyles for teenage girls and all with a reasonably funny scipt. And some great gymnastic routines thrown in. In spite of myself - i really enjoyed it. And i learned a lot about cheer-leading as well. :)
Quills (2000)
Intelligent thoughtful provocative
Unlike too many films about the marquis de sade, this film deals more with de sade's philosophy and his ideologies than his sexual practices or "crimes". It damns the critics of de sade who condemn him for monstrousness without understanding the context of his life. The film's central struggle between the authoritarian asylum keeper and the libertine de sade is a struggle that resonates throughout the centuries and is as relevant today as it was de sade's times: literacy and publishing and who "owns" the written word. Its denouement is a challenging and powerful comment on freedom of speech. And yet this is not simply a dry academic study, it is also a well plotted and well scripted piece and the acting is superb. The sets, reminiscent of the best of the Alien films and City of The Lost Children, convey the claustrophobia of the 18th century asylum. This is not a titillating expose of de sade - this is excellent drama that educates and entertains at the same time. And i cannot recommend this film enough.
Critters 4 (1992)
so this is what angela basset did before she was famous
trying hard to fit into the scary space comedy genre, this film falls down in two of these. It does indeed take place in space - but it is neither funny or scary. The plot is dismal and the one joke, concerning the computer's intellect, is overplayed to death. Saying that Paul Whitthorne as Ethan, Angela Bassett as Fran and Brad Dourif as Al Bert make the best of their ham script. The homo-esque relationship between Ethan and Al Bert is hinted at but never explored whilst the attempt at sexual tension betwen fran and rick is so crude as to be laughable. All in all this is a turkey that is best suited to late night tv, preferably whilst do the ironing.
