Sweet Revenge: A Hannah Swensen Mystery (2021)
An Embarrassment
Love AS & MSB - and had high hopes for this. But 'Sweet Revenge' is awful - not even AS can save this poorly conceived atrocity. In total agreement with previous reviewers: terrific Barbara Niven is made out to be too much of a ditz and the absence of the terrific supporting cast is so disappointing; a 'sister' that's never been mentioned before and seems inconsistent with the family???; too many changes in the settings; plot is feeble; and - worse yet - the ending is ludicrous. No woman (clothed in such a tacky gown and nearly sweated to death in a sauna) would EVER return to a dance with hair and makeup in a mess and presumably copious amount of body odor. I like the one reviewer's suggestion that the series continues with 'Sweet Revenge' being revealed as a very very bad dream. My suggestion is that Mike be killed off in the line of duty and HS continue on with the series with Norman as the rightful suitor. Who wouldn't want their always faithful 'wing man' to be their life partner? Please restore this series to its previous standards!
Aurora Teagarden Mysteries: A Very Foul Play (2019)
Ensemble Cast Boost
The best aspect of this episode is highlighting the ensemble cast at the beginning of the movie. Rehearsing for the 'play within the play' allowed the wonderful supporting cast to stretch their characters' collective wings and show more dimension. Loved it!!! Sadly, the show then degenerates to its usual squirrelly, non-sensical whispering and dashing about complete with Aurora's squinchy-face looks and long-in-the-tooth juvenile antics. The wig is the highlight of her performance.
A Small Town in Texas (1976)
Stereotypical Snooze
Stereotypical corrupt southern sheriff flick. Wronged ex-con returns to girlfriend & child, friends pay the price for loyalty, takes forever to set up final confrontation . . . zoned out before that happened. 3 stars is benefit of the doubt.
MatchMaker Mysteries: A Killer Engagement (2019)
Horrible
Couldn't get thru the first 10 minutes without nauseous disbelief at how utterly horrible this movie was. And whether it was the actress (Danica McKellar with whom I am unfamiliar) herself or the writing for her character, I found this to be the most incredibly shallow and saccharin performance I've ever had the misfortune to witness. I simply couldn't bear it. Couldn't turn it off fast enough.
