Ghost House (2004)
8/10
Brilliantly funny and heartfelt
17 January 2021
Why doesn't this movie have a DVD/blu ray release? I have been looking for it for years now. This man is haunted by his father's admonition that he should own a house and when he finally finds one in his price-range, he quickly realizes it's haunted...by a female ghost that doesn't like interlopers on her domain! What ensues is a hilarious fight to win the house, right down to fighting with chickens.

But when the story takes a turn, it becomes more sweet and sad but still has some deft comedic touches. By the end, you are cheering for all the characters that came before. Even the rolling credits have a special funny touch added that I won't spoil. If anyone ever finds this to purchase, let me know, please! It's a true hidden gem.

The horror musical you HAVE to see!
6 August 2012
First, I will mention that I hate just about every musical film in existence. Then I will tell you that even if you hate musicals, you will adore this film if you are a Rocky Horror Picture Show fan.

So-dan lives with her grandmother, who attends a movie one day and disappears. So-dan soon discovers the Ghost Theater while investigating her grandmother's disappearance. She applies and is hired to work as a box- office attendant by a suicidal manager. One late night, So-dan discovers she is not alone-the theater is home to four ghosts that are trapped there ever since a forbidden movie was played decades before. Elisa is a Joseon Dynasty princess who rules over the theater. Her minions include Wanda, a bulimic ex-performer (kisaeng) who counts her own hair obsessively, Hiroshi, a Japanese soldier and Mosquito, who can only be best described as a cross between Beetlejuice and Rocky Horror's Dr. Frank-N-Furter.

As So-dan learns more about her ghostly friends, she also discovers more about her grandmother's role in the forbidden film and the involvement of all the inhabitants, including the manager of the theater. It is decided that the forbidden film must be shown again to break the curse.

This film grabs your heart right from the start and keeps you wildly entertained with the singing and dancing of the ghosts. We learn their stories from their songs as So-dan is accepted by them. The second half of the film becomes a bit more bizarre but the viewer will still find more than enough to keep them entertained. I highly recommend this movie but it is very hard to find.

P.S. I have ebossert to thank for turning me on to this movie!!!

Great American tale with a Japanese mentality
2 April 2010
Tales from the Dead features four short stories about revenge and learning to appreciate life while you can. It is told from the viewpoint of a young medium, telling tales of her real-life experiences speaking with the dead to a woman she picks up hitchhiking after her car breaks down.

This film is unique in that it is an American production but with Japanese characters and language (it is sub-titled in English). In fact, it has that Asian-Horror feel to it like The Ring or The Grudge in that it is excellent story-telling without the need to add a ton of gore or violence. If you are a fan of Asian horror, definitely add this to your list!

Steamy Psychological Thriller
10 April 2009
I really enjoyed this film. The acting was top-notch, although I agree with the other posters that Travis Fimmel who plays bad boy Ron was definitely channeling Brad Pitt, especially in the opening scene. Stephen Moyer, who now appears on the HBO series True Blood, was very convincing as an agoraphobic with a past.

Teresa Palmer was an excellent choice for her character; she somehow oozed overt sexuality and innocence at the same time. The sexual chemistry between her and the other two main characters, Rob and Andrew, was heavy enough to permeate through the screen.

The plot was excellent and the ending leaves you just a wee bit unsatisfied, which I like. Leave them wanting for more. And they did just that but not so you would be angry about it. It just left a bit to the imagination and I loved it. I would definitely recommend this film to a friend (and plan to!).
