The Pee-Wee Herman Show (1981)
Hyperactive PeeWee
This is a very fun show with PeeWee Herman. Paul Reuben's character is not a child here, but a youngish teen.
Here he is a nerd on a sugar high getting into whatever he feels like. Lots of joyous fun to be had with all his friends antics.
Singing , talking to the furniture, reading mail-and interacting with all his friends is only part of this day glo piece.
I really didn't catch much of the adult humor. I thought much of the humor was a reference to the 1950s -1970s kid's tv shows. There was lots of nostalgic moments.
What I was most impressed with was PeeWee's athleticism. He runs, jumps, and dances across the stage during the whole show. He resembles a real life Peter Pan.
As fun as all the goings on in the Playhouse with his friend (including talking furniture, lot of puppets, and eccentric neighbors ) it was just too much for me. It was too much sensory overload.
All in all, I loved the PeeWee character-but for me I am better suited to his interactions with David Letterman.
I will miss this character and Paul Reubens. He was such a funny and sweet man.
An Honest Liar (2014)
We all have secrets, even James Randi
This is a very interesting bio documentary of the Amazing Randi. James Randi exposes the fakery of spoon bending and Christian faith healing. Which is very admirable.
I was disappointed that the film wasn't more "in depth " about this. I seem to remember Randi's books and interviews where he shows how to do the tricks he debunks.
Anyway, he comes off as a lovable curmudgeon. After all he is exposing the charlatans -who prey on people and take their money. He is the hero in the first part of the film.
But then what happens. He gets exposed for his dishonesty. It turns out he is a gay man who hid this fact ( and his relationship) to be safe. It's understandable as far as that goes. The public back then was not as tolerant as it is today. There is however a great deal of cover up of the identity of his partner.
I'm not sure what the point of the film was . At first I was rooting for Randi, but near the end I wasn't. I felt deceived by him.
I wondered what else was he hiding.
Again, it's fine to be what you are . The whole part about his lover's identity being changed was confusing to me.
Again it's understandable if it was because of discrimination.
It just seemed that at the end, I was the one duped.
Wasn't sure the direction of the film.
Wishing I watched either the beginning or the end.
Stalked by My Doctor (2015)
Eric Roberts
Although this is serious subject matter-it was pretty funny.
Eric Roberts is perfect as Dr. Beck who has a Jekyll and Hyde personality. He falls in love with his pretty patient, and goes off the deep end. There is something unsettling in Eric Roberts appearance, and he has become more distinctive looking with age. It works well in this film and redeems it from being super campy.
A lot of scenes, though preposterous, give him more of creepy street cred. The scene in the cafeteria is frightening.
I give the directors credit for the pace of the film. It's never boring or slow.
The makeup on Eric Roberts is a bit too thick and too dark. I think they could have lightened it a bit.
The rest of the cast is surprisingly good in this predictable film.
Hard Candy (2005)
Revenge film
This film is just a mean spirited sick mess. Why was it made?
Ellen Paige plays a sociopath in the form of a young woman. She claims to be 14 but could easily be in her early 20s. She is a liar, through and through. Although she more than resembles Molly Ringwald's character in Sixteen Candles- she's not sweet and probably older than 16.
Patrick Wilson portrays a man attracted to younger teen girls- not little kids -but still -gross!
So they meet no she tortures him to get so called revenge for her friend. Stupid and implausible. I wish I could get my time back. Also had nightmares.
This is a horror movie.
Ciao Manhattan (1972)
Goodbye Edie
This movie features Edie Sedgwick as Susan. Susan is supposed to be a former debutante (?), who has ruined her life and good fortune with excessive drinking and drug use. There is not much plot to this. Just Edie trying to dance and tell stories about the "good old days".
The movie is very ugly and brutal. Edie ( Susan) is not shown in a good light. It's painful to watch her. One wants to step into the film and save her. Or at least comfort her. Edie/Susan has lost most of the charm and polish she had when she was in New York. She is a shell of the person she was -or at least the person they portray her to be in the 1960s. The end is inevitable.
It's very sad to see the old Edie, bright and laughing in the footage. She seems to have fun at times. She even did got married and appears to be getting on the right track of things. But it's too late.
I do think this film is important, in a way, to show the reality of drug use.
Ultimately, there will be many more Edies and Susans. And once again, there will be no easy answers...
The soundtrack has some good songs. The one that is played at the end of the movie is very poignant. The song by Richard "Kim" Milford at the end of the film is terribly haunting. I think it's called Justice.
I would recommend the late Jean Stein book, Edie, instead of this.
I do hope this sad girl is resting in peace.
She was a good artist and had a beautiful smile.
Rest in peace, Edie.
Southern Comfort (2001)
Sad film,
Robert ( formerly Barbara) is a FTM trans person. Their partner Lola ( formerly John) is a MTF trans person. They have found love and acceptance together.
The film concentrates on Robert who has ovarian cancer. They had top surgery but did not have ovaries, etc.removed.
It's very sad that the doctors don't want to treat Robert , for fear of ruing their reputation. What's also upsetting is that Robert doesn't seem to have any healthcare at all.
. Most of the film is of Robert going through the dying process. Its very sad.
I really think there was so much medical negligence here. They dismiss Robert as an ovarian cancer patient because of their identity. But why did they even allow any surgery and male hormones to be used by Robert with no aftercare ?
Surgery is not without risks and since Robert chain smokes, and has been smoking since their childhood.
I cannot fathom why any competent doctor would not disclose the risks of any surgery.
The characters are very likable. Much of the film is spent on them getting ready to attend a trans community gala called Southern Comfort .
Robert and their friends are all caring people that deserve so much better than just surgery . I feel they all were used and discarded by the medical community I just get the feeling that they were operated on and given hormone injections. That's all. People need better care than this.
The movie just seems so unfair.
The film touches more on the social lives of the characters. The film doesn't have much depth to it. The people seem incredibly sad.
There are no answers here.
