Dumb Money (2023)
Dumb Money is sad desperate money
I didn't really know the story behind the Gamestop short squeeze other than some of the headlines that it made. Having watched it I am a little wiser but a bit deflated.
Wall Street is shorting Gamestop as they see the stock overvalued due to the move of games purchasing online and digital downloads. The business model has been superseded aka Blockbuster
An Analyst decides, I'm guessing mostly through nostalgia that Gamestop is a good company, although within the movie he never puts a single logical or financial argument forward as to why, it's simply 'I like it'.
Every single cut to a Gamestop store shows the reality, the last throes of a dying business whose management clearly have no idea of how to turn around. From these cuts in the movie it looks clear The Wall Street guys are fundamentally right....
The Wall Street Bets crew. The film introduces a number of characters all desperately in debt for various reasons. Most have zero financial knowledge or experience. They are making financial herd decisions out of desperation, happy to gamble what little capital they have and potentially their families livelihoods, on a meme. This is what Wall Street calls the Dumb Money and the movie unfortunately kind of confirms again they are right.
The pyramid scheme - fundamentally encouraging highly inexperienced 'Dumb Money' people to buy a financial product based upon a premise that you are 'sticking it to the man' is manipulation of a societal anxiety over inequality of the financial system. As in all pyramid schemes the early ones will make money but the late ones will be punished badly. Nothing goes on forever. Keith Gill disappears, nobody knows his financial net worth, he didn't get out at the top but he didn't get out at the bottom either, I'm guessing he got out quite ok compared to many others.
The friends and family - the only wise ones who are trying their best to talk sense into the Dumb Money, who unfortunately are too manipulated to listen.
Robinhood or Hood Robbin - the reality pun of the movie and the source of deflation from the story. The characters who you would have liked to see rewarded are back to their desperation only feeling more miserable at what they had lost.
Ancient Apocalypse (2022)
Pseudo arguments from a pseudo guy
Whilst it is enjoyable to visit these ancient sites, some of which I was previously unaware, the logic based upon very spurious premises he tries to then conclude as a factual theory is excruciatingly painful to watch.
Then lets add lots of ominous music and tones to sponsor his premise that the entire field of Archaeology for some completely unknown reason is suppressing him as part of some conspiracy?
There are lots of reviews here the he opens up the field for alternative thought. Well there are plenty of dumb ass thoughts out there but that doesn't mean we should give them oxygen just because they exist.
My recommendation for Mr Hancock is he's not too old to do a Degree in
Archaeology, learn the science and you can give up the pseudoscientist title that you really do deserve.
But hell he's making a buck out of this crank on the internet, so maybe I'm the one that's stupid.
Az ötödik pecsét (1976)
Amazing provocative cinema
Wow, I really enjoyed this film. What starts as a close and interesting character study escalates dramatically in the second and third segment. The question it presents is one anyone would struggle to answer, but one the characters are forced to answer. As per the time period tyrants, come and tyrants invariably fall, that is the one solace for poor Gyugyu.
The question might also be if the characters had not been asked the question the night before, would they have reacted the same way in the final scenes.
The other aspect of this film which I loved seeing is Budapest itself and the characters and life in its streets.
Shantaram (2022)
The best apple I ate......
I am a very big fan of the book and my expectations of the adaption were huge and very much anticipated, considering the numerous failures to launch previously.
What they have achieved in this series is a triumph, very strong characters which I understand and found attachment to...
Very sad Apple did not continue the series, it is evident that they really don't understand how to adapt out of devices into content (music is going great ain't it apple.)
From a content perspective they dropped this and there isn't much to keep me biting on a subscription fee. Eve has left the building I am afraid....
The Last of Us (2023)
Ain't got brains to feed em.....
Had me for 75% of the first episode. Truly scared and feeling the mood.
Then hello, here we are at the same base premise of zombie and base humans .... it's all been done before, before and before that.
Yah it's a game and will get votes from its aficionados but for an HBO production, which I am usually a big fan, vastly surprised by the lack of originality.
By EP3 I feel cutting my toenails is a much more satisfying experience and have given up. For those diehards, buy a used PS 3 if you must, just play the game, it deserved its rating but not this show...
Sorry my brains have been eaten to many times by such........
Babylon (2022)
Quite no very overdone
Scriptwriter - let's pull every crazy story we ever heard about early Hollywood and make it into a movie.
Producer - but we need a big Hollywood names to pull it off,,
Me - Yawn, could have been a series of vignettes with different actors that would have been far more fun and authentic.
Debrief - historically I felt the actors had no connection or feeling to the times. Periodically it doesn't feel the times, with obvious flaws in costumes, dance and theming...
Analysis - A deeply flawed film that is far too long that had me looking into space for many many moments, only to be pulled back occasionally by jarring and mostly obscene low brow attempts at shock or humour.
