Popee the Performer (2000)
ICONIC
I love this show!! It's a great mix of uncanny and goofy. The violent humour, the sound effects, the limited soundtrack replaying over and over again. Poppe being this sociopathic kid who always has to get his way. Kedamono is a punch bag for Popee. And Papi? He's just hilarious. He's Popee's weird gay dad, who can speak to aliens.
I absolutely love their character designs. Their colour palettes, costumes and expressions work so well, especially Kedamono's masks. The fact they didn't have the budget to make them speak, but made it work perfectly.
Some episodes were just 'violence is funny' and I could name some that didn't have a good punch line, and left me saying to myself ''that wasn't chaotic enough''. But I love it anyway.
I kind of got sad at the end of season 3, cause I just NEED MORE CONTENT. I can't get enough of this show.
Hazbin Hotel: Masquerade (2024)
What the hell...
After watching this episode, I wanted to crawl out of my skin and poke my eyes out.
Let me start with Poison. The singer slayed it, but at what cost...How many sexual scenes, where a dude is thrusting into Angel, do we need? Do we need to see him in a bondage outfit, with his tongue out, giving another guy a BJ? I think the viewer gets it. And the erotic dancing isn't really helping it either. He was JUST abused by Valentino!
What did they want from the viewer to feel while watching Poison? Should I feel bad for Angel? Should I be singing along? I personally think it's weird that they made his trauma into a song. I'm not saying it's a happy song, but it just overall feels strange...
He was just making sexual jokes and flirting with everyone in the previous episode. With hints of being in a toxic relationship with Valentino. I did NOT expect this to be it.
The realistic portrayal of sexual abuse was so disturbing. Also the drug addiction. When did this show get so serious and real? They have been cracking jokes all this time, like it was a fun comedy. If you want to portray a serious topic, go ahead, but don't give the viewers a harmful lesson at the end.
Let's talk about the Loser song. How does Husk singing about them being losers better Angel's situation? Comparing his gambling addiction to sexual abuse doesn't make sense either. That is not the best support, to tell a victim of SA he's a whiny loser and that HE is at fault, because he made a deal and can't go back on it. Yes, Angel did make a deal, but nobody signs themselves to be sexually abused!
And why did Husk go and talk to him anyway? He is the last person who wants to talk to him. Angel repeatedly flirts with him, even though Husk clearly isn't interested. Vaggie even called Angel out for harassing the staff in episode 2. It looks to me like Husk hates Angel. And Husk telling Angel he's fake, when he was playing everyone's psychologist... I don't blame Angel for getting angry. Husk sees through Angel's facade, but insulting him isn't the best way to go about confronting him. This is a toxic relationship. And if they'll try to make a ship out of them, I'm rolling my eyes.
And don't tell me Charlie doesn't have the power to go against Val. She's the princess! I know she was hurt by Angel, but she should suck it up. Why didn't she go and talk to Angel? Shouldn't she be the Steven Universe of the show? Isn't that the whole point of her personality? That she is an empath in hell? I feel like she has become a background character for the last 3 episodes. She is the one, who should have had a heart to heart with Angel and give him a shoulder to cry on. Tell him his friends are there for him. This is what Angel needs to hear, not being called fake and a loser. He probably hasn't had a genuine friend in his whole life. I could never EVER see my friend being abused and then do nothing about it like Charlie did.
And after Angel is feeling better, he should have gone to Husk and apologise for his behaviour. Done. What a healthy way to settle it. This is the minimum. I am at the point where the whole show needs rewriting, and we are only on episode 4.
The plot is finally not rushing anywhere, focusing only on Angel. But his feelings are completely skimmed over and not taken seriously. And Charlie's character is completely botched. What a shame. The show is far from the worst, but this episode could have been so much better.
EDIT: I'm used to coming up with my own opinions at first, but after reading others opinions about it on Youtube, I just feel bad. A lot of SA victims have been speaking out and feel seen or can relate to Angel's situation and that is just awful. I didn't want to invalidate anyone's experiences. Everyone has different opinions and I stand by mine.
Do I think Poison is fetishizing SA? It's questionable to me...The song overall is good. The lighting is good, the animation is good, Angel is wearing some sexy outfits and has a whole choreography. It was made to be replayable and catchy. Valentino also has an attractive design. One of the storyboard artist has openly said they have a r*pe fetish. But, on the other side, other people are saying it's not fetishizing. So, I don't know. You decide for your own.
Do I think Husk was victim-blaming? He seemed like he wanted to genuinely help Angel...It just puts me off from a writer's standpoint how it was executed.
Hazbin Hotel: The Show Must Go On (2024)
One star for the epic animated fight scenes
This was the worst episode so far. There are so many ploholes. So many rushed character developments. No time for breath. I literally winked and missed a major character death, that left me so confused.
In episode 7 Charlie said they have a month to prepare for the extermination. And episode 8 just starts with it. Like what?? It's so dumb.
The previous episode was about Charlie collecting troops for the fight, as well as Vaggie. Which was just so rushed. How did she win everyone over in Cannibal Town so quickly with a song? What was the thing that changed Camilla's mind to agree to the fight?
Why did the angel's in Heaven let Adam do the extermination? I thought Emily was against it. She just let it go? I though she was above Adam.
The relationships between the characters are so underdeveloped. With such little screentime. When Charlie got emotional and said it was good knowing them, my eyes were dry. We never see Charlie hanging out with them. The only relationship that is kind of beliavable is Angel and Husk. Which I'm not a fan of, becouse I know they are trying to make a ship out of them. He's 70! Angel is like 30 or something.
Charlie and Alastor's relationship is weird. I still don't know what's Alastor's deal. Does he want to take over Hell? Why didn't he think of getting an angelic weapon while fighting against Adam. I thought he was supposed to be the smart one. It's sad freaking Nifty killed him instead of Alastor.
I also don't care for Charlie and Vaggie's relationship. Vaggie's backstory didn't have any buildup. And their conflict got solved quickly too, but I guess that's ok.
Also Vaggie not killing Luthe was so dumb. There was no reason to keep her alive. Charlie is kind of dumb too, wanting to give Adam mercy when he is the main problem Hell's been exterminated many times.
Sir Pentitious's death is so confusing. Did he have something with Cherri bomb? Cause I didn't catch any chemistry between them. His death was also so anti-climactic, he got such little screentime that he haven't earned my sypmathy yet. Just like any of the characters. And how did he end up in Heaven?
I'm so grossed out by Valentino and Vox's relationship. They just weren't funny at all.
The main extermination plot is over. It was so anti-climactic. The songs were random.
The fighting scenes were animated just fine. That's the only best thing about it. The animation. And Lucifer's comeback was fine too.
Not excited for season 2. It's not that the characters are unlikable, it's just there are too many and you can't have an arch for each one in such little time span. I'll continue watching just becouse I'm curious about Angel Dust.
Hazbin Hotel: Welcome to Heaven (2024)
I don't care anymore
I'm pleasantly surprised by the angel designs. I was worried they would all look like Adam and have horns. That is the most positive thing I can say.
Vaggie's backstory was good I guess? I don't really care about her.... and Adam is finally in this episode! He is the only villain who has been an actual threat for the hotel. The angels and Charlie putting Adam in his place was satisfying to watch, since they made him extremely annoying. Don't know why they haven't thrown him out yet.
The songs are fine too and I like the angel characters Sarah and Emily. Although the rest of Heaven is kind of just skimmed over and barely introduced. The people in Heaven just stand around singing all day or something? Do they have economics? Heaven kind of feels lifeless, futuristic and plasticky. Shopping centres look more welcoming. Do they have plants, trees, flowers or pets? Please tell me they have dogs in Heaven.
And It's kind of stupid they don't know who/what chooses people to go to heaven and hell. Doesn't god decide? Where is he?
Charlie did come unprepared, she hasn't really redeemed a whole bunch of people. If I am right, she had 6 months to prepare (the time skip is such BS). Sure there is Angel and Sir Pentitious, but I think it would be smarter to gain more redeemable characters before going to the angels, when so much is at stake. She just put hope in Angel Dust. Husk talks to him more than her! How does she know he's a good person? She should be thanking the lord Angel Dust conveniently decided to be better in this episode, because she doesn't even know him. Wouldn't it be better to put Sir Pentitious on the spot, since she sang a song with him learning how to say sorry?
Angel Dust is my favourite character so far, since he has the most going for him. Angel Dust's redemption arc has me intrigued. Choosing to be better with Husk's influence. I'm slowly getting around their dynamic, since the show isn't forcing anything romantic between them. Which I was really worried about.
Anyways, I hope Valentino dies the most painful death imaginable. If the creators were signing for the 'worst fictional villain' competition, they'd won. But something irks me about his design, since I've seen some fanart and edits that give me nausea. If he was some ugly, no neck, huge stomach drunken old dude, it would suit him so much better..... Is the creator scared to make ugly characters, because why would you decide to give a r*apist an attractive design? But that's just a small pet peeve of mine
It's pretty apparent the writer of the show doesn't have professional experience on how to write a coherent story. The pacing, timing of jokes, rapid character introductions and developments, worldbuilding. It's all just atrocious. You have so many original characters with charisma, but when you have to put them into the story, they just don't work. The premise had so much going for it! But the hotel doesn't matter, it could be a coffee shop, a school Charlie has opened, or a psychiatric ward. All that matters is the B plot with the angel extermination.
Overall, I enjoyed this episode. 5/10 because I love Angel Dust and I want to see him get redeemed. He is the reason I started watching this anyway.
Hazbin Hotel: Dad Beat Dad (2024)
Pretty good episode
The random competitiveness Alastor has with Lucifer is fun, and their song's good. But it would make more sense if it was established in the previous episodes that Charlie feels like a daughter to Alastor more than her own dad. I didn't even know that they both created the hotel until now, which is important information. Or maybe I missed it, since the first episodes were going hundred miles per hour...
They haven't even interacted this much before in the previous episodes. I didn't even know what role Alastor had at the hotel, since the story focuses more on his relationship with Vox Tech and the overlords. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. Nice to have his character finally clarified.
The second song was ok. Nice to see Charlie's and Lucifer's relationship developing I guess? Although I didn't feel emotional or anything, since I barely know the characters.
The story introduces Lucifer and Mimzy. Lucifer is a likeable dork and I wish he'll get more screen time. Mimzy is just there to give us Alastor's backstory and bring trouble, so not much to say about her.
The things the show used for humour previously like the characters cursing in every sentence is less used in this episode, which is a nice change. I couldn't stand that type of humour, because it reminded me of the time when me and my classmates learned their first curse words in 5th grade and used them repetitively.
Overall, after the uncomfortable 4th episode, that almost made me drop the show, it's alright. It's just alright.
Hazbin Hotel: Scrambled Eggs (2024)
It's a meh from me
This episode started off quite fun. The plot is finally focusing on the main characters and their shenanigans at the hotel and their personalities. But I couldn't care less about Alastor's B plot going to the meeting with the overlords. And I also don't care about the new characters Zestiel, Camilla or Velvette. I'm way more intrigued by Charlie's hotel plot, but the series is forcing the extermination plotline. Just choose one. It's only the 3rd episode. The extermination can wait a bit.
When two plotlines are fighting for attention, it's hard to keep up what's happening and get invested in the characters. I only truly know about Charlie's backstory, I want to know more about Alastor's backstory or how he came to be at the hotel. Is he with Charlie or going against her, because I can't tell. Where is Vax and Valentino? How did they all die? And the important question, do pets also go to hell since Angel and Charlie have one?
The songs were fine in this episode, but I couldn't see the point in them. Camilla and Velvette's song is ok. Velvette wants war, but Camilla is rational and is against her idea. But Vaggie's and Camilla's song was so random. I couldn't feel bad for neither of them, because the characters just haven't earned my sympathy yet. The fight between Charlie and Vaggie was so minor it got solved in less than five minutes. I couldn't care for it honestly. And at the end the gang is just finally getting along? Did I miss something? This show is slowly losing my interest.
Hazbin Hotel: Radio Killed the Video Star (2024)
Mixed feelings
The best thing about this show has to be the voice acting. It's so much fun. Alastor's and Vox's song is THE BEST so far. It's catchy, it has great singing and acting and also the visuals are great. LOVE it.
Although the new characters have charisma, I don't care much for them. I haven't even gotten the time to know the main cast in the first episode, so why should I care for some minor characters?
The plot of this episode is...actually I don't know? PLOT A - Sir Petitious is a new member of the hotel and PLOT B - Vax wants to kill Alastor? I think? I don't know if it's just me, but I had to watch the episode twice to understand what was happening. There is something wrong with the pacing. It goes from barely introducing Sir Penticious, to introducing Vox Tech, to introducing Velvette, to introducing Valentino, then we're back to the hotel and it's revealed that Sir Penticious is Vox's undercover agent. It goes from one thing to another and I just can't keep up.
Also I'm not intimidated by any of the villains yet. Alastor doesn't even seem like a villain, just a goofy guy hanging out at the hotel. Vox has beef with Alastor, that's it. Valentine is Angel's boss and I couldn't care less about Velvette. If they are not a threat to the hotel, why should I be worried about them?
Sir Pentitious is the one who steals the show for me, having an interesting design and charisma. Why couldn't the episode be just about him? It's a shame he was both revealed and redeemed in the span of like two minutes. Just with a song for which I don't care.. How can Charlie trust him so quickly? He's a stranger to them. This show needs some fun filler episodes, so the viewer can get to know the characters better. The plot is just rushing and rushing.
And was that whole ordeal with the Angels forgotten? I thought they wanted to make Adam the main villain, since he was introduced in the first episode and is an actual threat to Charlie's people, so where is he?
It's a 6/10 but It's not losing my interest yet.
Hazbin Hotel: Overture (2024)
Fun, but a messy start
So, I don't really watch Vivziepop's work or anything. I watched the first episode of Helluva Boss, but It wasn't my cup of tea. And I don't remember much from the Hazbin Hotel pilot. But when my friends turned the first episode on, I was intrigued.
I'll start with the animation. It's fine. The characters proportions are sometimes stiff, but it's far from bad.
I never really liked Viv's designs, but they are so unique. The stylized proportions, clothes and shapes are so distinctive from other cartoons. But I would add diversity to the colour palettes. They are all red, pink, white and black. And on paper they look cool, but most of the time, especially the scenes at the hotel, the backgrounds are the same shade of colours as the characters. It's really hard to make them stand out. And I know, it's Hell. The backgrounds will be red. But when Charlie is walking on the streets, she just doesn't stand out. Nor does Alastor or Angel. The scenes with Adam work way better, because Charlie stands out.
The backgrounds have a lack of depth. Why are the objects further in the background so overly detailed? They look scaled down.
The camera is sometimes all over the place and I would like to see the show playing more with the lighting and shadows.
Next, the music. It's fun overall. LOVE Charlie's song, but I didn't care for Adam's song. He was kind of too abruptly introduced, I didn't even know what was happening. Who is this guy, is this the main villain? Where is the gang? Why is he so annoying? And about Adam's design...is that the design for all the angel's? I was so confused that he was an angel, because he looks like a demon. Why does he have horns?
Anyways, the voice acting is AMAZING. I think it's my favourite aspect of the episode.
The pacing is messy. There is plot A - the gang is working on a commercial for the hotel. And then plot B - Charlie wants to win over Adam with the hotel idea. And it ends with someone killing an angel, who was exterminating the town? I had to watch that twice to understand that, since it wasn't building up to it at all.
I think they should have just stuck to introducing the hotel for the first episode. And slow down a bit with the character introductions. Introduce the hotel staff and Charlie's relationship with them. Maybe with a song. Show them working on a commercial. Make Charlie struggle, the staff is incompetent and each one of them has a different idea for it. They fight. Charlie is desperate to make everyone like each other, so she hires Alastor as a last resort and he has it done in a second.
Now, the humour. I loved the punchline at the end, where they cut the commercial short, because there was some build up to it. But the other jokes didn't work on me. It's trying to be funny all the time, including the useless swearing, Angel's flirting. It's repetitive.
Overall, it's 5/10 for me. Just because it's not the worst or the best. I love the fun premise. Being an animator myself, I LOVE seeing indie animation getting the attention it deserves.
