Saltburn (2023)
Tried really hard to have shocking effects, which weren't really shocking.
I didn't really know how to rate this film after watching it because on one side, i enjoyed the first half but was begging for it to end in the last half. I see what they wanted to do with this one but it didn't really work out for me. At first i just enjoy the premise of all the different people meeting at university and later the more time they spend at the estate, the more they wanted this summer to last forever - but with a dark undertone. I even enjoyed the awkwardness from time to time, but at some point it was just getting weirder without the characters getting any depth within the development of the story. At some point i already knew where it was going and wasn't shocked at all about the MC slowly going insane and killing off the whole family. I was rather annoyed they made him such a perv instead of a mastermind, getting what he wants because of manipulation and choosing murder only when its necessary (i only "understood" the murder of Felix, because their relationship was heading to rock bottom and he was indeed able to stop Oliver from his plan, in theory). Now the way they actually wrote Oliver in the film, he didn't feel any like this, and it's definitely not on the acting side. I felt the writing being absolutely off even while watching it. I had a feeling someone came up with this story, who actually spend most of their time in the rich society, on similar estates and imagined for their monotone life to get a little kick start which could bring all this (hypocritical) happiness into danger but never really gave it any deeper thought. They never really made up specific and unique characters, which were more than their 2 personality traits. Even if it was the idea to show how easily certain people can be exchanged for another one or just can be brushed away by the family, to show how arrogant and hypocritical they are, it felt like a decision made by the writing, and not because of the features the family has. And this is just an example for so many moments in this film. But i don't want to end this on the negative side, so something they did really well here: the vibe constantly holding a good level of "everything seems to be perfect but there is something uncomfortable and dark in the air". Over all, a cake without a filling, which still has a nice taste and glaze tho. I don't regret watching it but i would not recommend it to someone else to watch it.
