RWBY: Painting the Town... (2014)
RWBY vs. Giant Robot = Awesomeness
1. Change of Outfits? Check
2. Nice Beginning Mini Arc to start the Volume? Check.
3. Build up more of the Kingdom of Vale by seeing more of its city? Check.
4. Have a killer song to accompany a fight scene just in case? Check.
Volume 2 began already strong & kept at it with consistently good episodes. Either with the quirky fun that is RWBY. To world & plot building involving the antagonists. The interpersonal character drama that is Team RWBY trying to become closer friends. But come this mini arc in which RWBY try & solve who the antagonists are, we get the set up for an awesome action fight scene involving all of Team RWBY vs. A high tech mech.
And it-
Is-
Glorious!
Where Volume 1 showed how awesome & effective a team these young huntresses were. Here in Volume 2 we see how they've grown to hone in on working as dynamic units. They have a strategy for every combo of their group and prove to be beyond of a match for a giant robot.
And here I think is where most viewers find that RWBY truly is a one of a kind show with action & characters unlike any other and a style unlike any other.
RWBY: Ruby Rose (2013)
A Colorful Beginning of a Simple Soul
The first time I watched RWBY was back in 2015. I went into the show not knowing much about it other than online discourse that was a bit blown out of proportion. Come to actually watching it I found a charming 3D anime that mimicked the look and feel of video games. As well as the awesome fantastical action of said properties.
But what most surprised me was the protagonist at the center of this story. Someone who stood out in their bright red hood & attire, a cute little girl wielding a giant scythe that was also part gun like a stick.
Ruby Rose.
A character who has enthusiasm so infectious it permeates the screen. Easily defeating basic henchman with a terrifying ease of her weapon. She is brightened up when speaking on why she wants to become "a huntress" - warriors who battle creatures of Grimm. Ruby, while a surprising natural talent, is also honest, kind, and above all wants to be a hero.
In this short manner, we learn all we need to know & are brought into the beginning of Ruby's journey in the wider RWBY story. And of all introductions of protagonists, this one stands apart. While the early animation had some quirks to work on, I cannot give this solid introduction anything less than a 9/10.
Highway to Heaven: To Touch the Moon (1984)
This Episode is about Love even with Tragedy
To say this episode is the best would sell it short. It is a story of love, of a mother & child, of essential kindness onto others, & the will to allow love into your heart. And it is honest & unflinching in that. It brought me to tears for both its sadness and its beauty.
More so than even the pilot does this episode show you what is so timeless about Highway to Heaven. What is great about it. Yes it is of its time 1984, yes maybe in ways culture & demographics have changed. But what hasn't changed? We are all human. Full of pain, fear, and love and the hope of love. How kind love can be, to let others in to your heart & to your life.
Maybe Johnathan Smith the Angel bringing a little kindness is cliche, its too earnest. But that honest to God earnestness in kindness is what makes these stories work & the story of To Touch the Moon one of the best episodes of television I've ever watched. I was in tears by episodes end.
Never let this show be forgotten. Never forget to love.
