Triple 9 (2016)
Brillant photography, good movie.
This movie is shot witout the new high sensitivity settings seen so often nowadays. Look at the brake light. They are always red, not pinkish. Its rather shot with high iso setting, when needed, what can be seen on its sometimes high grainyness. Its dark but always extremely well photographed. Very raw. The colours are punchy, everything is as Kodak as it can get with digital. Very nice perscpectives, good cutting. Its pure eye candy. There is no bluring or denoizing going on. When it gets grainy there is also always a lighter part in the picture composition that keeps everything in balance. High contrasted. The photography perfectly matches the story and the acting. Its a dark thriller where reality bites, set in a apocalyptic part of our society. Some flaws, like some overacting here and there but all in all a solid masterpiece.
How It Ends (2018)
Ends like a Pilot
Good Actors, has decent script, is well made, but it just stops. If I had known, I wouldnt have watched it. Even if a second part is to be made , it lost me.
The King of Comedy (1982)
Extremely Annoying
I didn't like the movie. It is built on 2 parts. The first part is a wanna-be comedian (De Niro) stalking a successful Comedian (Jerry Lewis). The second part obviously is about the Stalker kidnapping the Comedian. I couldn't watch the second part, because I was so annoyed that I had to stop.
What makes this movie so cumbersome is that the main character (De Niro) is an annoying stalker which is shown endlessly. Even after the point is made, that he is a stalker, the showing of him stalking goes on and on and on and never stops.
The movie has a main character which is near to unendurable. Yes, its great acting, but its in my opinion a thing that destroys the movie, to follow a main character which is annoying and boring.
The photography is nice and the remaster looks great, the movie catches the 80s look and feel of New York well.
It may be worth seeing out of academic interest, but seems entertaining only to masochists.
Secret défense (2008)
Horrible tendentious propagandistic movie
Contains spoilers. This movie is not very french at all. It is a rather poor attempt to transfer the ideology of some US-Secret-Service-flicks to french cinema. The movie consists of a mechanical subsequence of disgusting out-of-law practices of some secret-service-maniacs and some crazy guys that are not any better than the Secret-Service guys. The director tries hard to convince the viewer, that things work that way in reality and that its good that way, i.e. co-workers can be tortured any time just because of their religion - you never know. Women are shown as sexual objects and abuse is not only part of the game but it is the game. What makes this movie disgusting is that the directors don't crititze thiese practices, but they advertise it. They show what they think - their own narrow-minded fear driven moral.
Plot is poor too: The movie starts with a girl that doesn't pass an exam at university and is then consoled by another student. Surprise surprise, the co-student is an undercover recruiter and his boss blackmails the girl into becoming an agent (as a student she earned her money as a prostitute). She then has to get into sexual intercourse with a terrorist to find out about his plans to release Vx-Gas in Paris.
The second storyline is about a french guy that has to deal with drugs to finance his mothers apartment. He is caught and brought to prison. To avoid sexual intercourse with other inmates he is forced to join the local islamistic-group in prison and gets radicalized by them (some hugs, a bit of meat and some isolation do the job). He is picked by the terrorist to be the one to release the Vx-Gas in the metro of Paris. After some luggage swapping in some airports the girl stops the guy in the metro and the ending credits say: Since 2001 french intelligence could prevent 15 attacks in France.
Der Knochenmann (2009)
Austrian cinema at its best
One awaits a crime thriller that closely follows the book by Wolf Haas and has many intelligent gags but the the viewer is then overwhelmed by a great masterpiece that works on many levels - a sarcastic thriller not unlike Fargo, dark humour, amazing photography that reveals some Austrian reality, an intelligent plot with cool twists, great acting, ironic social criticism etc. This movie is in a row with the Kottan series, Indien, the other Brenner-movies of course, Slumming etc. and reassures one that although Qualtinger is dead his humour is not gone. When viewing this film one gets almost sad by realizing how good Austrian cinema can be, but there is not much support for filmmakers in Austria. I have no idea if this movie can work in a translation, but its worth a try.
The Island (2005)
Dumb action flick, good visuals, entertaining
*little spoilers included* This is a costly chase-style action flick. Its eye-candy, its fast, and its always a chase. But, its completely dumb: In the beginning the story is a mixture of 1984, Brave New World and some 70's sci-fi classics, as the one where humans go into this huge rotating thing and believe its heaven, but its murder, Soilent Green and so on.. But that's just for half an hour and then the two main characters manage to escape and the rest of the film they are haunted by some gone-crazy mercenaries. So what you need to enjoy this flick is either a massive hang-over or an IQ not higher than an average potted plant...By the way the action scenes are faked a little bit, as many collisions are not shown.
