Aesthetically pleasing, story could have been better
7 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This movie was very beautiful: the visuals, the music, the voice cast, the stop-motion effects. It was indeed very pleasant to watch.

The characters were witty and enjoyable, too. However, I couldn't completely enjoy the story. In particular, Mr. Fox drags his family and his whole community into chaos, yet somehow he re-emerges as a hero. He keeps saying that "they are wild animals" but somehow he is the only one truly enjoying the mischievous adventures. I don't know how it is in the book, but it would have helped me if the other animals shared his "wild" sentiments. Otherwise, Mr. Fox came across as ambitious and adventurous to me, somebody who posed people close to him to unnecessary risks.

The Odyssey (1997)

Solid and entertaining despite age

Decent movie. The cast was great and although the movie is old, it was not boring. It covered the core aspects of the Odyssey, had enough action without compromising on nuance and character development. Some things were naturally changed, like he spent five years at Circe rather than Calypso. However, the story was generally preserved for a movie adaptation. Another interesting thing was that there were black characters (e.g. Calypso) very naturally integrated. Unlike in some of the recent movies, they felt natural rather than forced.

If you are looking for a solid adaptation of the Odyssey, this is a good choice. If you care more about action and visuals, maybe the movie is outdated.

Too slow and characters not developed
29 December 2023
The movie was very slow. If you haven't read the book, you will probably be lost. Also, without proper character development you don't even get surprised or annoyed when a betrayal happens. Well, if you like cool visuals, maybe the esthetics of the movie will compensate for the lack of the plot and character development. As for me, I don't care about the visual effects too much and honestly the music got a bit annoying at times.

All in all this is one of the clear cases when I can say I liked the book much better.

What is it with this character counts, now I am simply writing so that I have enough characters to post my review.
