Chernobyl (2019)
Know Before You Watch
Contrary to what many reviews here say, this is a fictionalized dramatization of the events at Chernobyl. Although an entertaining series, the vast majority of what is shown either never happened or didn't happen the way it is shown. Just one example is how the key figure, Legasov, is portrayed as a single man, but was married with two children, and was never at the trial. Watch the series for entertainment, but if you care about details, there are many documentaries available that include interviews with the people who were actually there. For what it's worth I happen to like the series, but had the series been made fully based on what actually happened it would have been even more compelling and relatable.
War of the Worlds (2005)
Missed Opportunity
Within the first 30 minutes of this movie, the sequence where the aliens first appear is great. The rest of the movie is completely built around and fixated on dysfunctional family tripe and a contrived and unnecessary conflict between the characters played by Cruise and Robbins that make the movie nearly unwatchable. I expected and hoped for so much more from this movie, and only got typical Hollywood over-thinking and human interest garbage that added zero to the storyline. Two stars for how the aliens were portrayed, which was great, and some of the scenes that actually involved them. A real missed opportunity.
Special Bulletin (1983)
Good, not great.
80's TV nuclear destruction fare, entertaining but not especially realistic or accurate. Pretty funny when one of the "terrorist" characters says NBC would kill its Mother to have exclusive coverage of the story (this was originally broadcast on NBC). Side note about the credits on IMDb for this...the John Walsh (John E Walsh) of America's Most Wanted is listed, but I'm fairly certain that he is in fact not in this movie because the person listed in the credits at the end of the movie is a John R Walsh. If you're looking for a better and frankly more terrifying nuclear destruction-related drama, I recommend the British movie Threads.
