I only came here for the biscuits...
25 May 2020
First off, this is obviously a low-budget movie, and although that presents some flaws due to budget constraints, overall the film is quite solid. The story is intriguing enough to draw you in from the outset, add some developed characters, the use of flash forward, and an anxiety-inducing score, you get a tight, tense horror with great practical effects. And I only watched for the biscuits.

The Droving (2020)

Folk Horror Gem
3 May 2020
I was pointed in the direction of The Droving thanks to a recommendation on Twitter, and I was expecting the standard indie movie format, but The Droving threw me some pleasant surprises. First off, the opening sequence features some stunning landscape which instantly set the tone for what was to come. I knew nothing about this film before watching, but after the landscape featured in the opening sequence, strong performances and intriguing plot, drew me in further. There was one scene in particular towards the climax of the film that I especially enjoyed. The Droving is well worth a watch.

Ticker Tape
19 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
When I watch a movie I love those unsettling scenes that remind me that I'm alive, and create a unsettled feeling that remains with me long after the film has finished. The Ingress Tapes did not disappoint in that respect. The narrative is told via 8mm footage of a reel to reel tape player, complete with audio of the tapes, interspersed with scenes of South London mostly shot from a moving train. The narrator is obviously a psychopath who has managed to live out his deviances as accepted behaviour under the guise of London gang culture (shown in his mild regret at the accidental killing of a 'legitimate' victim's child). A disturbing, but strangely compelling, and beautifully put together study of the London criminal underworld.

Are you 'avin a bubble?

I'm been watching a lot of short films of late, and was starting to lose faith, and then I saw dead Celebrities. For me, this is what a short film should be...not 5 mins worth of self-indulgent opening titles followed by ropey acting and meandering storyline. Dead Celebrities is crisp, funny, intriguing and stylish. A well-constructed script with solid performances and beautiful camera work. I know I'm watching a good short when I'm not watching the time tick by, and Dead Celebrities was over way too quickly for me. Top job!

Exit is still there when you Exit
16 January 2020
I saw Exit at Horror-on-Sea and was mesmerised by it, during, and after, viewing. It has a David Lynch feel to it, especially the soundtrack, but a David Lynch that you might meet down the pub, and who may slip a little something into your drink. I loved the stylised tone of the film juxtaposed with the naturalistic performances of the very capable actors. A many-layered film that remained with me long after the screening.
