The Dick Van Dyke Show: The Attempted Marriage (1962)
So-so episode...
I'm glad to see I'm not the only one to find the Laura character to be rather annoying in the earlier episodes of the show.
Whether incidentally or on purpose, the writing of the first 2 seasons or so of the show definitely left room for growth in the personalities of all of the characters.
For example, around the middle of the 3rd season the Laura character was slowly starting to leave-behind what had become some pretty tedious and annoying behavior, not the least of which was a penchant for whining and being a general pain.
As the writing improved over the course of the series, not all but most of the main characters showed at least some growth, mellowing, and improvement.
This episode here is so-so.
Laura is certainly not the only obnoxious factor of this so-so,take it or leave it episode.
Watch it and see what you think. 6/10.
The Rockford Files: Where's Houston? (1976)
A weak story plus a poorly cast female lead ruins the whole show.
I was ready for nearly anything after reading all of the previous reviews for this RF episode here on IMDB. I tried to do my very-best to keep an open-mind about the whole show. So what did I see,and what do I think? I must say that most of the other, earlier reviewers hit the proverbial nail right on the head with their honest,to-the-point reviews. Why? Please,do let me try to explain some-of it .
There is plenty of downright nonsense to complain about in this episode. Firstly, the writing was not good at-all on this one. I say this because the whole story is surprisingly spotty and awfully-weak from start to finish.
As if that isn't bad-enough,we also have a glaring miscast part with the actress playing the lead guest.
To be fair, perhaps she was playing her part exactly as it was written and intended ,but she and her character come across as being rude, cold, and quite unlikable. It is surely not a coincidence that she was never seen in another episode.
This is one of the very-worst episodes of RF,it is one of the bottom 5 for sure. If you haven't watched this episode yet, skip it and save yourself the time.
3/10 or less.
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)
This movie makes Godzilla look like Shakespeare...
I have seen and thoroughly enjoyed many, many movies that are quite famous for being notoriously awful.
I have always managed to find something enjoyable about even the worst of films over the years.
This film here, however,is in a class of 'terrible' all-by itself. It is so far beyond being awful than anything else that I have seen that I have trouble even knowing how to begin.
I will try to do my best to explain. I am of course only guessing, but it seems that someone involved with the film thought that much of the film was quite funny. It really isn't funny at all as far as I can tell. The plot itself is weak. The cast and all of the acting is quite bad. The soundtrack, the music,is quite cheesy and it is painfully, annoyingly,
bad.
The problem is,this film contains none of the aspects or ingredients that manage to save almost all of the other bad films I've seen. Some bad films are so bad that they are funny. Not this film. As I've already mentioned,it really isn't funny at all,for any reason. It isn't funny in a campy way either, because it just doesnt have enough finesse or subtlety to be campy.
It is a weak,poorly-made,poorly acted, poorly directed, absolutely boring disaster of a film that fails on every level.
As far as some other reviewers calling it a cult-classic,I think that idea is pretty farfetched and silly. It is actually just a very-forgettable,poorly-made, crummy film. Skip it and don't give it another thought-you won't be missing a thing.
The Godfather (1972)
Over-rated snoozefest.
I tried to watch this movie with an open mind,
despite being quite aware of the many high-praises that this film had garnered over the years. I paid very-close attention and I watched the whole movie very carefully.
What did I see ?
Nothing special, that's for sure! The movie is very slow-moving.
The characters are silly, laughable clichés. The plot is predictable with a few unlikely twists. Some of the movie is unintentionally funny because it is so unbelievably weak in spots.
I kept waiting (in vain) for the pace of the movie to pick-up,or for something to happen that seemed even somewhat realistic. (Which never occurred).
When the movie finally ended,I was sorely disappointed and I wondered what was supposed to be so special about the whole thing. I'm still wondering why this movie is so highly rated. I honestly can only conclude that so-many people claim to like this movie because that is what they are expected to say and it is easier to go along with the crowd than to just be objective and honest. This movie is not special,it is not good, and in fact it isn't even mediocre. It is a truly forgetable snoozefest,a C- or D level film. That is my honest opinion, and I cannot be the only person to come to this obvious conclusion...even if I am one of the few that has the nerve to say it. 2/10,an overrated snoozefest and a complete waste of time. Skip it.
