An underrated masterpiece
28 March 2005
This movie is as valid today as was back in the thirties. All the cast is superb:from Katharine Hepburn to Adolphe Menjou,Ginger Rogers ,Eve Arden or Andrea Leads. It's fantastic to see a script so well written ,that moves from comedy to drama perfectly. This is the inspiration to masterpieces like All About Eve and many others. In the movie all the theater figures are present:the rich and manipulative businessman ,the old and pathetic actress, the melancholic young that dreams for a better theater life ,etc etc.And the dialogue is so great it's difficult to believe.I always saw Ginger Rogers as a great comedy actress and this movie is the proof. She almost stole the show (Kate Hepburn included) and Andrea Leads bring us the proper dramatic part of a movie that is like a old treasure full of pure gold.Personally, i invite you to discover this old masterpiece. It's much better than many others movie classics.

A near masterpiece that rocks your heart
6 March 2005
This movie is not a typical boxing movie.Thew script is perfect in a classic way,the actors are great and the surprise near the end hit your heart like no other movie has done in recent years.Clint Eastwood is a good storyteller in John Ford's tradition(many shots are like Ford's movies) but with modern themes and without obvious sentimentalism.(Ford used it sometimes, although did masterpieces like The Searchers, The grapes of Wrath or Stagecoach among many others).May the only failure of this great movie is the portrait of the girl's family (too obvious and manipulative for my taste),but this is a hell of good movie.Bravo for Clint,i'm only 22 years old ,but your cinema likes me much more than many young directors of today.

Scorsese homages Old Hollywood and DiCaprio is recognized at last
12 February 2005
OK,this movie is not a masterpiece, but i can't see the reasons many people give to dislike this movie. Its length??The usual length of all Scorsese's movies. The character identification with the audience??I've never was identified with Travis Bickle or Jake Lamotta. The movie is perfect in every single shot. The editing, the scenes design, all is really perfect.Howard Hughes was a spoiled rich man that defied the great American power(Scorsese criticizes again the American corruption beyond the eyes of an outsider and extravagant rich man).Cate Blanchett is perfect as Katharine Hepburn. At the beginning of the movie i was terrified (i thought his performance was going to be caricaturesque) but at the end i understood the kindness and the nerve of the greatest of all the Hollywood stars in Blanchet's face.Leonardo DiCaprio was a child phenomenon;an underrated actor because people ignores his first movies(This Boy's Life ,What's Eating Gilbert Grape? ,or his Rimbaud portrayal in Total Ecplise) in which he did everything (drug addict, revolutionary and evil poet, mentally retarded ,etc...).With the fame of this movie and his second Oscar nomination, the Titanic stigma disappear at last.No one could deny that his the great actor of his generation.(and better than Pitt ,Cruise and the rest of the pretty boys(except, may be,Johnny Depp or Ewan McGregor whom are great actors).I'm glad for Leo.Scorsese homages Old Hollywood style with nerve and precision:Citizen Kane,The Philadelphia Story(Hepburn's family), Bringing up Baby or his own Raging Bull are revisited in this film. This movie is entertaining and original. It tells the story of a man and his own demons inside of him.May it's a very long movie (a few minutes less and it would be a masterpiece) ,but is a movie that will achieve greatness with the passage of time.I'm sure of that.

The lost Disney movie of my childhood
12 February 2005
Yes,that is what i used to think when i was a child. This movie was not released on TV ,and it only appeared on video in 1994.I remember my wish for seeing the first Disney's masterpiece.Yes,the protagonist of the movie is bland and she's not aged very well, but the dwarfs and the queen are delicious characters. The music is perfect and the hand drawn animation is a perfect example of Disney's golden era. This was the first Disney movie and its success was unprecedented in 1937.It was a revolutionary movie that changed the perception about the animated form in cinema. It's a perfect movie ,although Snow White is not the kind of character a child would desire to be.In spite of this, the historical significance of the film hides the errors and the usual conservative message of all Disney's films.

The most accessible of Tim Burton's films
12 February 2005
A familiar tale which seems more a Spielberg's movie than Burton's.But i think this movie was snubbed at 2003 Oscars.OK,this is not the usual dark and bizarre world of Burton, but hey, this movie is like an American Fellini,a wonderful tale that debates the lack of illusion in our lives. The movie is also a wonderful portrait of a father-son relationship in an honest way.All the actors are very good(I've never seen Billy Cudrup as good as here) and the performance of Albert Finney is timeless. The movie has a magical quality that can be seen by anyone. That's why many people say this is the most accessible of all Burton's movies.I suppose that is not critic's like, but this is a movie that will age in a very good way.

Wonderful movie about the loneliness
15 February 2004
Wow,this movie is simply wonderful. The performances of Murray and Johansson are great.Murray has the cynic dialogue(and the funny moments, full of a kind of comic sadness) and Scarlett has an eyes that speaks for herself. The localization in Tokyo is the best metaphor that i've seen since Thelma and Louise. That city so big,so crowded,so cold ,is like the characters' sensation of loneliness and lost.Coppola gets poetic images with an ethereal music and a great cinematography. If you wanna see a movie experience, don't miss this movie.I think is the best love/friendship story i've seen in a long time.

Mediocre ,boring,and highly overrated
15 February 2004
Yes,this movie has great production values, but it is artificial, false, without a single remarkable performance(I adore Ian McKellen) and cheese lines from the most commercial and stupid Hollywood. The humor between Gimli and Legolas is so simple and stupid that i had to laugh and the hobbits jumping in Frodo's bed at the end is one of the most ridiculous moments of my spectator's life .The battles are a poor imitation of Lawrence of Arabia.Peter,i prefer you in Heavenly Creatures, your great masterpiece. This movie is only for fans, not for me.I will say this movie is the worst of the five nominees to Oscars(Mystic River and Lost In Translation are great movies ,much much better than this piece of crap for male teenagers)

A great entertainment with great art
27 February 2003
I always thought this was the best black and white movie directed by Hitchcock. He was a master and this movie is the proof.A simple romance with the wonderfuls Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman became a moral doubt.A simple spy's story became a suspenseful thrill with unforgettable shots(the long shot from the upstairs to the key in Ingrid Bergman's hand, the cup of poison.....).A simple story of nazis became funny with typical Hitch humor(the hateous and cartoonish perverse Claude Rains' mother.....).The script is nearly perfect and there is all what make a Hitchcock movie, even his cold blond girl(in this case a magnificent Ingrib Bergman in her ,may be,best role).A masterpiece in every sense of the word, definitely.

An entertaining movie with more depht that seems in the first view
12 February 2003
First of all,i think Spielberg is a great director of adventure movies. That's the best gift of many of his movies. This movie seems a simple entertaining flick but it show us how ET's director has grown. His obssesion with the family is here and also his best cualities as cinema autor(broken families, lonely child, sense of adventure.....).The movie is not great but is very good.I think this is one of the best biopics in recent american cinema, full of joy and ,surprise, drama. This film is also a magnificent portrait of the 60's ,the period of the Frank's swindle. The story of the young fake becomes in a great biography in Spielberg hands.Leonardo DiCaprio at last can be the great actor that always he was.His performance here is the most adecuate in every sense of the word. He's moving, charming, and plenty of life. This is his best performance since Gilbert Grape.Tom Hanks is good, although the show belongs to DiCaprio. Catch me if you can is an entertaining movie that give us more than it seems.

Wonderful!¡The masterpiece of the unemployed people
13 October 2002
I think this is the best Aranoa's film and the best film about unemployed people. The film contains a likely marxims that i never saw in other spanish recent movie. Each character is interesting and have their own problems.Javier Bardem is,as always, excellent in his role. The script is perfect and this is one of the few movies that make you think about the world we live on.If you wanna see a good movie that make you laugh and make you cry with a great script and interesting characters, this is your movie.

Only one reason to see this movie:Jonathan Jackson
13 July 2002
This movie is bad, definitely. Is like a TV movie with all the ingredients:a poor mom who has lost her boy,a sad family and overacting performances(specially Michelle Pfeiffer searching for an Oscar more than for a lost child). All the cast is a waste. Is sad with names like Whoopi Goldberg, but is the truth. The only one that is great here is Jonathan Jackson. His performance is great, moving and full of nuances. His lips and his powerful eyes are specially good here. He's not the lost child but as the older brother of him,Jackson shines as few young actors can shine.I'm sure he will be a great star. He's the only good thing in a movie full of clichés.

The best comedy for a hot night of summer.
13 July 2002
The Seven Year Itch"is a minor comedy from Billy Wilder. However,it has an enduring magic that made special. Is the story of a husband whose wife and son are in vacation. He's alone and full of temptations with the new neighbour(Marilyn Monroe).Wilder has a great script with his usual elements:acid vision of the typical american and his problems, very good dialogues and magic. The only failure of the movie could be it's too much theatrical(is based on a play)but it's great anyway.I see this movie every summer and is special.Few movies capturing the essence of the summer(a summer in the 50's New York in this case). Also, the movie contains the most famous shot of Marilyn Monroe, when she is outing of the cinema. She was a great comical actress and this is very clear in this movie. In short,a great comedy to see the life of the 50's and the best way to spend a hot night of summer.

The granddaddy of all blockbuster, bigger than life
13 July 2002
This is the most popular movie of all time. All in it is great:the story of the fall of the Old South, the story of a selfish and pretty young woman named Scarlett O'Hara, the love story, the settings, the costumes, the shots...All the movie is BIGGER THAN LIFE.We must be sincere,it is not a masterpiece but,who cares? David O'Selnick made a great movie in which he redefined the sense of Hollywood spectacle and this is the most important thing about this movie. His glorious technicolor and performances in soap-opera style are definitely attractive to the public. The epic consists in made a spectacle of every gesture or every word.Is a movie to see a thousand of times because if it's the first spectacle movie in all the senses,is the best too. The first part of the movie(until the oath of Scarlett in Tara)is the best because we see the personal fight of Scarlett to conquest the love of Ashley and the fight against the Civil War.The dialogues are too much literary but in this consists the spectacle. The second part is worse because the marriage of Rhett and Scarlett is a stop in the narrative. The film contains unforgettable sentences like the famous "Tomorrow is another day" at the end. Many people is very sceptical with this movie today because its plot twists and its soap opera style but this was the first and real blockbuster of Hollywood.I repeat,it's not a masterpiece but deserves a viewing.Without this film may that Star Wars,Ben Hur,Doctor Zhivago or Titanic(so compared to Gone with the wind)never were existed.A movie for all the ages,a movie bigger than life, the perfect example of the Golden Hollywood, when art and success were a good couple.

Sleepy Hollow (1999)
8/10
Gothic,delightful,funny and beautiful tale
4 July 2002
This is a great movie in many ways. The first time i saw it,i didn't like very much because i reed the Washington Irving story but in the second view i was pleasant. The movie is dark and funny with Burton's sense of humor. The photography reminded me movies like Nosferatu(Murnau),M(Fritz Lang);was completely expressionistic and dark. The story of the Headless Horseman is a classic tale from America and this movie show us a variation respect to the book story. However,Johnny Depp is great here(like always)and the movie combined horror, humor and a beauty typical of the fairy tales. Is a fantastic movie. The only failure would be a script too much complicated and with some holes but that's doesn't care,at least for me.See it if you like costume horror movies.Probably,Sleepy Hollow is the most romantic movie of the last years in the old sense of the word.

My Girl (1991)

Decent movie about the problems of the childhood
4 July 2002
"My Girl"is a movie that very people hate to be a chick flick or to be too much teer jerker.I think the movie look make that the people are mistaken. The movie seems a kids comedy with Macaulay Culkin as a great star but is a drama in which a little girl learns great lessons from the life in the summer of 1972.May be the movie are not deep but the music of James Newton Howard and some scenes are unforgettable. The scenes in which Culkin and Anna Chlumsky are together are very beautiful and reminded me the scenes of the kids in To kill a monkingbird".Jamie Lee Curtis and Dan Aikroyd are good too and, personally,i liked the dark humor of the movie(the little girl lives in a funerary). It's a movie more adult that people think. It's not a perfect movie but is beautiful like many typical american movies. Also, this movies captures what summer is for a kid.Nostalgic(the soundtrack is plenty of old hits),beautiful,comedy-drama about the problems of a little girl in a far summer.(Don't forget the Kleenex for the tragedy of the end)

Well setting but too long and bored
3 July 2002
I'm not a Tolkien fan but i find the book better than this movie. The movie is not magic like the books. It seems more like a new Braveheart, with very much battles and a simplicity in its plot(good vs evil)unacceptable.Elijah Wood is not,at least for me,the actor who can play Frodo. He's a good actor but not here.At least ,the design of the movie is great and the special effects are incredible. This movie would be better if were shorter and much more magical ,like the Tolkien's books.I prefer Heavenly Creatures as the best film of Peter Jackson.

Solas (1999)

The best of the recent spanish cinema
19 June 2002
"Solas" is a wonderful movie with a great plot and great actors.Maria Galiana as an old and rural woman that goes to the city to see her daughter and her illness husband made me cry.Is an special movie with a good screenplay.I'm an andalusian boy and movies always has been unfair with Andalusia. In all those movies, andalusian were funny and stereotyped people of the flolcorical Spain. This movie show us how is the life of very rural women in my country. Also,"Solas" is one of the best movies about the relationship between a mother and her daughter that i've ever seen.As loneliness' portrait ,"Solas" os powerful too.Is a movie that insinuate more than what show it,as all good movies. For all those whose dreams are not come true, this movie show us that the loneliness is not the best way to do.

Ghost World (2001)

Less than i expected, but good film
18 June 2002
I expected more cinism but "Ghost World" is a good movie about the difficulties to be different in our society.Thora Birch brings us her best performance and Steve Buscemi is,like always, great.A few failures i found.First of all,i don't understand the presence of Scarlett Jonasson's character.I think her character is only a pretext. In the other way,the movie is more focuses in the relationship between Birch and Buscemi than in the social criticism.I think the ending is great, unexpectable and remarkable. Is a good indie movie for those that love the good movies with good plots, characters and dialogues.

Celia (1993)

Those happy days of the childhood and the Republic
15 June 2002
To see "Celia" is like to travel in a time machine to the past and to see how was Spain in the 30's.All we are identified with that young little girl critic with the adults' world and her imaginative troubles.Elena Fortún's books were a symbol for the kids of the Republic.During the dictatorship of Franco ,they were forgotten. Is wonderful that Jose Luis Borau recovered those books and made a series as wonderful as this.Everything what we see is is through amused and transgressor point of view of Celia,a rich and bourgeois little girl with a great heart, imagination and other's people to the understood ones of the adults, which takes her into funny troubles.Like Elena Fortún in its books did,the series introduces you critize social and adult through the vision of the girl, which very is guessed right and causes that the series the same pleases to adults and children. An example of this is the friendship of Celia with the young arab while all they reject it or to go disguised like the daughter of the crew member instead of going like a disguised rich girl of M.Antonieta.Any spanish boy of any time can feel late identified with the Celia's world, with those evening's lunch or those nannys as Doña Benita. That is what makes great to this series. The cast of the series is exceptional with actors like Ana Duato,Maria Luisa Ponte,Maria Isbert,Carmelo Gómez and above all the unforgettable Aurora Redondo as Doña Benita. The election of the girl protagonist was good too.Nobody could have been Celia better than Cristina Cruz with her face of crossbeam and her expressive blue eyes. The script of the series is of Carmen Martin Gaite,an exceptional writer and the direction of Jose Luis Borau was so good that is was recognized in a festival of television in New York. This TV-series was incredible and a great success in Spain in 1993.Celia is the little girl of Spain and i will always be a huge fan of her and her incredible world.

One of the few artistical movies of the american cinema
8 June 2002
For a cinema based more on the entertaiment than in the art, like the american cinema,"Fantasia"is a work example of art over own cinema. With a great talent to mix drawings and classical music in a perfect combination,Disney did its best movie.I remember that i saw this movie when i was fifteen and was a great discovery for me.The brooms dancing with the overwhelmed watching of Mickey or the final drawings, when it sounds the "Ave Maria"are unforgettable moments of the cinema's history. This is a masterpiece.

The best adventure movie of all time
8 June 2002
This is,by far,the best adventure movie of all time.Errol Flynn is the best Robin Hood that I has never seen and Olivia DeHavilland,Claude Rains and, mainly,Basil Rathbone, are magnificents. With a high budget,a never even technicolor, and an excellent soundtrack,"The adventures of Robin Hood"is a masterpiece. We will never be able to forget scenes like the final duel between Flynn and Rathbone, with the shades of its bodies and its swords reflected in an enormous wall. We'll never forget the sweet romance between Errol Flynn and Olivia DeHavilland. For all this and much more ,this movie deserves all the honors.

A masterpiece plenty of imagination
27 May 2002
I think Heavenly Creatures is the best movie of Peter Jackson, the aclaimed Lord of the rings' director. The movie show us the madness of two young girls in a small city of New Zeland with unforgettable shots plenty of imagination.Jackson show shots with what is happening in girls' minds and there are an excellent special effects.Kate Winslet(how great this girl is) and Melanie Linskey are excellent in her roles and the music(with a great score of Peter Dasent and wonderful Mario Lanza's songs)is very effective.A truly masterpiece of the 90's,i love this movie and i wish users will can see it.

An unforgettable animated soap opera
7 May 2002
This classic was released in 1976 in Spain after the great success of "Heidi" and was a great social phenomenon. My mother and all my family cried with the life of this italian child that searched his mother in Argentina.Based on a popular novel,"Marco"has been re-released several times in Spain with a great success. The animation is good and the characters (like the monkey of the child or the italian people)are well described. Is a good example of good japan anime.

Russell Crowe,Russell Crowe and Russell Crowe
23 April 2002
Russell Crowe is overacting and this is not a "beatifull"movie. Is very unfair that Academy awards have given the Oscar to Ron Howard instead of Robert Altman. It's simple, lineal and a thousand times seen movie. Is bored and sometimes it seem a TV movie.Don't waste your time in this Academy winner(the worst Academy Winner of the last 4 years)

Matilda (1996)
8/10
A dark and expresionisstic example of good cinema
23 April 2002
"Matilda"is based in Roalh Dahl's book. His irony and sense of humor are shown in this great and underrated movie. All the movie is telling by DeVitto in children's point of view and the camera is always near of the ground. Also, there is a bizarre expressionistic visual style. That's unusual in a familiar movie. The message of the movie is also great:anyone that love you can be your family.I think that's great to break stereotypes in a child. The other message is also possitive:the reading like salvation means and happiness. If to all this we added a dark and funny sense of humor, criticizes to the traditional family, and the great performances of Mara Wilson and, above all,Pam Ferris like savage, fat person and amused director of an institution, the movie is near perfectly.I think the time will be fair with this fantastic movie.
