Very original plot, which makes a most interesting movie
14 July 2003
Excellent acting by Ulrich Thomsen, Lisa Werlinder and Ghita Nørby. I have heard that Ghita Nørby told Per Fly (the director) that she knew exactly how her character was because she was like that herself. So he let her do it her way. And thank God for that. She is exceptional good in this role. Lisa Werlinder plays the silent girl, who a few times gets very upset. When she does, it really lifts the movie to an even higher level. Ulrich Thomsen does not say how he feels, so it is very important that you can see what he feels. Very well done. Not easy to get away with as good as this.

Beautiful pictures also makes this movie a pleasure to watch. Especially when they are shooting in France you have some very amazing pictures. It is also nice that the camera does not shake as much as most Dogma movies.

But if it had not been for the original plot it would not have been a good movie. Today in Danish movies it is mostly ordinary people you see, so that everybody can relate. It was fun for a while, but the ordinary story about ordinary people can get really boring if you make it over and over again. The most important scene in the movie as I see it is where Christoffer announces to the employees that the company will merge and that even more people will get hired. The crowd cheers and you can see how Christoffer's eyes just shine. That is one of the reasons that he sacrifice so much. Because of the employees.

Arven is original. Interesting. Extremely well played.

Arven is one of a kind.

Entertaining, but not a movie to remember
28 January 2003
I have just come back from the cinema, where there was a first premiere on Midsommer.

Before the movie I thought that this would be one of the bad teenage horror movies. The trailer gave me the impression that I would expect something like a Friday 13th without the splatter effects. That wasn't what I got.

There was a lot of scary effects, and they worked very well. Thumbs up for the sound editing, as you could hear they had been working a lot on it. The plot was kind of straight forward from what you would expect in a teen horror. In the first scene one of the kids kills herself, and over the movie you try to figure out why.

Where the movie lagged was specially in the ending. It seems that they tried to copy Scream too much in a way. Through the film there haven't been any action scenes, but in the end it all goes too much action, and the plot reveals itself too fast. Also, some of the young actors could have had more experience, but they had chosen a nice lead with Kristian Leth and also Tuva Novotny who plays the mysterious Swede are doing a great job.

All in all not a movie you would remember in some years, but very much entertaining. Should be seen in the cinema, so you don't lose too much of the sound quality and loudness.

Does not follow the dogme rules entirely
1 July 2002
It's been a while since I first saw Festen the first time, but after that I have loved it a lot. Many people think that it is the best dogme-movie ever, but I wouldn't go that far. I have given it 9 stars. I didn't give it 10 because it doesn't follow the dogme-rules entirely. At one time the camera is put down on the ground. According to the rules it should always be handheld. If you watch all of the dogme movies this would probably be the movie where you notice it the least. When Lars von Trier makes movies, he has some extremely long pauses, where Thomas Vinterberg, puts more movements into it. All in all a very very good movie, but I think the best dogme movie is still Idioterne (in English, The Idiots), because it is just SO weird.

One of the best behind-the-scenes
31 May 2002
Most behind of the scenes are really most about saying how fun it was to do the movie, and say how much they love one-another. But this is not like that. Far from it. It shows how much work it has taken to do this movie. Mostly because Bjork and Lars Von Trier didn't work together well.

It's quite funny that Bjork has been credited as being in this documentary, because as it tells in the end, Bjork asked the director if she could be taken out of this, and she was. You only see her in one clip, and that is far from a closeup, hehe.

You should see this if you liked the movie, and want some background information. But mostly, you get more information about Dancer in the Dark by listening to director's comments track on the DVD. I gave it 8, for not being one of those pat-on-the-back behind-the-scenes.

The Believer (2001)

A movie about jewrysm
31 May 2002
Warning: Spoilers
Spoilers. Don't read further, if you don't want to get your evening ruined.

The Believer has, by some journalists been called the new American History X, but I think there is a great difference. American History X is about a neo-nazi who discovers that nazism isn't what he thought it was. But The Believer isn't most about that. As I see it, it's more about jewrysm (maybe not the correct spelling). Throughout the entire movie it tries to explain why he question the jewrysm so much.

Where I think this movie lags a bit is where it shows why he starts to go back to jewrysm again. I think it skips too fast through it, and doesn't explain it good enough. And another thing is the ending. I doesn't understand it. It's probably me who is a bit slow there, but I get it. Maybe the director has thought about how this infinite nothingness was, and if maybe it wasn't good as the jews think? But I can't come to any conclusion with the ending, maybe someone who is smarter than me could email me and explain it to me?

One of the best thing in this movie is Ryan Gosling's performance. In my eyes he does a very good job, and I am pretty sure that we will see more of him in the future. Just like American History X helped on Edward Norton's career, I would hope this helps Ryan Gosling too.

I'll advice all who hasn't seen it, and read further, even though there was spoilers to see it. It really is worth it. I gave it 7.

Is there a meaning of Unbreakable?
24 April 2002
I have seen this movie somewhere around 5 times or so, and none of the time has it been boring.

I totally agree with neovsmatrix's review, but I have a few comments.

After seeing a movie a few times I always try to figure out why the director made it, and why he chose to do this and do that. Usually I figure it out, but with this movie I have had difficulties.

It could be something like "how much are we willing to give out to find the messias". But I cannot convince myself on this.

Maybe the movie is just meant as entertainment, and doesn't have some particular meaning, but if you have seen the movie, and have found a meaning of it, would you please mail me?
