Flesh and Bone (2015)
Bravo
The series deserves a standing ovation, it's a masterpiece.
Each episode got better and better, the final episode was breathtaking. It's a dark, disturbing story on all fronts, but so compelling. The acting is very good, the characters are fully developed - faults and all. The score is amazing, the sets are beautiful and it's filmed in such a way that you feel you are there watching. I didn't expect the show to be so captivating, and it actually took a couple of episodes before I felt invested in the series, but each episode built upon the prior, and the series will drawn you in. While watching the final episode, I began to understand the story itself was like a ballet performance - beautifully executed in a tragic sort of way. The final ballet is amazing, and worth watching the entire series just for that.
It seemed some critics panned the series - but in my opinion, it's a masterpiece - the best of the best. If you liked Black Swan, Fame, Flashdance or other similar themed movies, I think you'll find Flesh & Bone as amazing and enjoyable as I did.
Mardi Gras: Made in China (2005)
This film is excellent
I've watched this documentary twice - and although I'm an major movie buff, most documentaries don't hold my attention. This film however was mesmerizing. Almost every shot is perfect - saying so much more than an audio commentary (which this documentary does not have).
The concept of this film is amazing, I can't praise it enough. Mardi Gras beads - who would have thought??
Amazing and excellent choices of interviews - film footage of a factory in China - the film makes you feel like you are actually there.
I'm political aware - and I've read several books on globalization so there wasn't anything in this film that was a surprise to me. However, it's made me think so much.
I wish so much too, that this world was a better place.
A million kudos to the filmmaker - and thanks for making this film too.
I wish everyone could see it.
The Notebook (2004)
Best Love Story I've Ever Seen
This is the most beautiful, touching love story I've ever seen. I'd bet the house it will become a classic over time.
They don't make them like this anymore. It's so much more than the hundreds of silly, trite romantic comedies out there.
Superb acting, cinematography and score.
I've never read a Sparks book, but I'd like to thank him for this gift of a story.
I could watch this movie over and over again, and as a huge movie buff, especially of indies and foreign films I rarely have the time or inclination to watch any movie more than once. I'll buy the DVD - also a rarity for me.
I'll never forget this movie. It's a toss up between this, Donnie Darko and Amelie for my favorite movie of all time.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Excellent Film - My favorite this year!
Great job Richard Kelly - this is an amazing film. I rented the DVD last week and watched it twice, and then again with the commentary. I've never done that with a film. This will definitely be one of my favorite movies of all time. Jake Gyllenhaal gives a brillant performance and brings Donnie Darko to life.
I wasn't confused by the film, it's circular logic was flawlessly executed. There's 20 deleted scenes on the DVD, mostly cut due to time constraints. I'd like to see a DVD with the scenes added back in, I could easily watch a 3 hour version of this film. I'm also sorry to have missed it on the big screen. I normally don't watch movies more than once, but I'm buying this DVD because I want to watch it again and again.
Great music, superb and different plot, beautiful cinematography - this film is like a gift to the viewer. I look forward to more from Richard Kelly.
My So-Called Life (1994)
Oh, this was the show of all shows, wasn't it?
I fell in love with this show from the first episode. I was lucky enough to catch in when it first came on the air. It reminded me of "The Wonder Years" - and I can remember laughing throughout every show, and getting misty-eyed at the end. I don't understand why they cancelled it either - it might have something to due with the fact they ran it against the first season of "Friends". This is the only show that I've watched, that I sent a letter to the network asking that they keep it on the air.
This was my favorite show of all time - Claire Danes was phenomenal and so was the rest of the cast.
Falling Like This (2001)
Every once in a while, a film comes along that grabs your heart and reels you in, and for a brief time - you transcend away from the present.
This film was beautiful and intelligent. It brought back so many of the feelings I had myself at that age and in love. The actors were so amazingly natural, at times I wondered if I was watching a 'reality' film - especially during the scene that takes place in the bathroom between Megan Wilson and the actress playing her mother. The mistletoe scene and the scene with Brian Vaughn and the baby were flawless and I was moved by a tide of bittersweet emotion watching them. I loved the score too, it complimented the film perfectly.
I am surprised and dismayed by some of the criticism in the reviews here. I thought the writing/dialogue was smooth, original and realistic. The story line was wonderfully simplistic - a young girl looks back at the sweet and sometimes turbulent relationship with her first love. I was enthralled with both of the young characters, but I was especially enchanted with Katie because of the strength and intelligence of her character. I do agree with the reviewer that compared Brian Vaughn (Boyd) to a young Brad Pitt - I found myself thinking the same thing throughout the film. I also believe the pacing and the length of this film were superb - a perfectly timed glimpse into the lives of two people that touched each other tenderly.
I watch a lot of movies, and this is definitely one of the best I've seen. It reminded me of "The Virgin Suicides" because of it's dreamy and poetic feel. I was touched deeply and I can't wait to see more from the talented Dani Minnick. I urge the reviewers to watch the film again, there were so many slight nuances in the film, you may not have caught them the first time. This isn't your run of the mill glossy teen film that Hollywood has been burping out for the last several years - it's much more perceptive and raw. I plan to view it again as soon as possible.
